Africa Cancer Care, Inc.6011 Telephone Rd, Houston, TX 77087713-995-8000Non-Profitwww.africancancercareinc.org Africa Cancer Care, Inc., a group of individuals devoted to bridging disparities in cancer care in the United States and Africa, was founded in 2005 as a result of the looming cancer predictions for Africa by the World Health Organization and other International health bodies. Their mission is to create a path to a cancer-free world step by step.

Their goal is to create cancer awareness and prevention through education, early detection and treatment. Africa, a continent of developing countries, is ill equipped for the devastation that will be wrought by cancer by the year 2020. Africa lacks the infrastructure, expertise, and technology to halt cancer in its track. This is compounded by the complete lack of cancer awareness that exist in the various communities of Africa. Many people in some African countries still think cancer is a consequence of the evil spirit. Cancer accounts for 12.5% of world deaths, greater than the percent of deaths caused by HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria combined. By 2020, 15 million new cases of cancer are expected yearly, 70% of which will occur in developing countries. 5-year survival is 10% for Africa compared to 70% in developed countries.Brask, Inc. - Neela8720 Industrial Dr, Pearland, TX 77581(337) 882-1944Manufacturingwww.ieeinc.netBrask Inc., Neela will employ twenty-seven people in its first full year of operation, with projected growth being upwards of 100 employees. Did you know? Diet Sodas are just as bad as regu-

lar soda. Do yourself a favor and

skip them all together.

Torch major calories by doing inter-

val training-Mix up high- and low-

intensity exercises over 30-45 min-

utes.

Fat doesn’t make you fat, sugar

makes you fat! Watch your intake

of sugar and you will lose weight.

Snacking isn’t bad for

you...snacking on junk food is what

gives snacking a bad name. Try

fruit or veggies with a protein like

Apples & 1 oz of Peanut Butter.

Having a hard time figuring out serving sizes? If you use restaurant portions as your guide, you’ll be out in left field when trying to determine what the new Dietary Guidelines mean when recommending 7-10 servings of fruits and vegetables, 6-8 servings of grains, and 2-3 servings of low-fat dairy.

Use these springtime symbols to help make sure you are enjoying all the nutri-tious foods for good health and weight con-trol. Each item is equal to 1 serving.

2 tsp peanut butter = 1 peep

¼ cup dried fruit = 1 golf ball

½ cup cooked rice, pasta or cereal = 1 tennis ball

1 ½ ounces natural or 2 oz. processed cheese = 2 small chocolate eggs

1 medium piece of fruit = 1 baseball

1 cup milk or yogurt = 1 baseball

½ cup cooked or raw cut up fruits or vegetables = 2 peeps

1 cup leafy vegetables = 2 tennis balls

1 small muffin = 2 peeps

1 ounce lean meat or fish = 1 egg

½ ounce nuts or seeds = 4 jelly beans

1 cup ready to eat cereal = 1 baseball

1 cup grapes, cherries, or berries = 1 baseball

What is Partners for Pearland?

Partners for Pearland was founded in June 1994 by a small group of business owners and concerned citizens with a desire to raise funds to help make a difference in children’s lives. The group organized and started its fundraising efforts in the fall of 1994 with a Bowl-A-Thon benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In 1996, realizing that the need for help with books, school supplies and clothing for school aged children in the Pearland area was not being fulfilled, Partners for Pearland changed its fundraising focus and began the Bowling for Books Bowl-A-Thon. In 1998, Partners for Pearland held its first Annual Golf Tournament at Country Place Golf Course and it has become an annual event. With the generous support of local business owners and individuals, Partners for Pearland has raised over $300,000. These monies have been used to purchase school clothing and school supplies for eligible Pearland area students. Partners for Pearland will also award college scholarships as well as scholarships to acquire GEDs to less fortunate students so that they may have access to a future through academic and vocational training. If you are aware of someone in need of assistance, please contact Stacy Adams at 281-798-1846 or the Pearland Neighborhood Center at 281-485-1987.
