Beeston Parish Council were delighted to have attended the retirement dinner of the most amazing man, Doug Haynes, who has served the Parish of Beeston either as Councillor or Clerk since 1965. Doug was present- ed with an unusual print of Beeston by J W Turner from the 19th century. Recently awarded the British Empire Medal Doug, no doubt, will be as busy as ever around the Parish. Waterstones Book of The Year did not disappoint. A quite literarily individual book which sweeps you into the 1890s. The insurgence of science is woven seamlessly into medical development of the day and the emancipation of woman is demonstrated by the wonderful Cora who scours the countryside in search of fossils. One is reminded of the plight of the working class of the day and the need for the social development of housing. A marvellous book whose description of Essex leaves you yearning to visit it scored 9.1 on the PBBC scale. Our next book is “Swing Time” by Zadie Smith. Contact Daphne for details of the venue of our next meeting on September 5th. We currently meet in club members’ homes so please contact Daphne for information on the venue. Further details about the Book Club from Daphne on 01829 261078 commemorate the end of the First World War. If you are interested in being part of the group to help organise the event please get in touch. It will be a very special event scheduled to take place on Remembrance Sunday, next year. DW September 8th and the first of our regular season’s events. Bring a team or join a team on the night. £12.50 includes 2 course hot supper.
