President’s Message

As I write this note we are getting ready to embark on the 26 hour trip to Regina for the Canadian Western Agribition, and with freezing rain in the forecast you can’t help but wonder if we have rocks in our heads! As I write this note I have to reflect back on the year’s record high prices. It’s a great time to be in the livestock industry and for everyone who stayed the course, you should be getting rewarded for your efforts. The Angus and Angus Influence cattle have been topping the markets all across North America. So holding on to Angus cattle is definitely playing in your favour.

Other than a lack of moisture it was a perfect year. Great shows, great sales and a chance to make a few bucks kept smiles on producer faces all year.

As the year draws to a close I would like to say thanks to all who have participated in shows or sales or who have bought Angus genetics. It’s you that keep us all doing this. May you all enjoy the upcoming Holiday Season.

Stay Safe.Tom

Thank YouThe Prince George Beaverly 4-H club would like to extend a huge Thank You to Tom De Waal for hosting a detailed clinic on how to pick a calf for the up-coming 4-H season. Tom has a wealth of knowledge in the industry and every 4-H’er left with insightful pieces of information. The kids were sent into a field of 30 calves and asked to pick their top 4 choices and why. They then discussed the reasons and learned tips from their own choices. Tom had 4 generations; heifer to first year, second year & a cow, demonstrating qualities to look for when they viewed the dam of their calf and expressed the importance of viewing both parents if possible.

After the clinic Tom and Carolyn De Waal insisted the kids could not leave the farm hungry and hosted everyone to an amazing spread of food and drinks. Wow, what an amazing evening. Kudos to Tom and Carolyn, the 4-H kids and parents are so thankful you took the time to share knowledge, time and your support. Thank you.Sincerely Beaverly 4-HPrince George, British Columbia

Donation Heifer Winner

Thank you to Jim & Shirley Moon, Red Moon Angus, Vanderhoof, BC for their generous donation. The lucky winner was Shauna Jacobsen, J & S Jacobsen Ranch, Williams Lake BC.

News From Around the ProvinceCongratulations to Jack & Lorrie Brown on their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Congratulations to Lorraine Wade who celebrated her 90th Birthday in November.

Our thoughts and best wishes to Alan Smith, Cathy Glover and their daughter Devon who was seriously injured in a farm accident a few weeks ago. Devon is making daily progress in the Kelowna Hospital.

Roger and Sue Taylor are thrilled to announce the marriage of their daughter, Jori to Ryan, the son of Ralph and Heather van Dalfsen.  The outdoor wedding took place on August 9, 2014 at Trinity Dairies in Enderby.  Jori and Ryan are residing and working on the family dairy and will continue the expansion of their Angus cattle.

WelcomeBC Angus would like to welcome Jim Moon back to the BC Angus Board of Directors.

Although it may be a short term on the board, 1 year term. I am looking forward to sharing the work load of the volunteer board of the BC Angus Association. My previous involvement with the BC Angus was a two term stint just a few years past. With Lance and Jill Savage, and Jack Brown as constants the transition into this board is made easier. Along with my wife Shirley and son Tom; we have been involved with Angus cattle, Reds in particular since the early 90’s. Can’t say the cattle business has always been rosy, but certainly challenging every year and every year there is always next year.

Looking forward to working with all breeders in British Columbia.Jim

Junior ReportBy Allison Speller, B.C. representative, Canadian Junior Angus board

Hello all! I hope that all the fall/winter shows have gone good, and that calves are doing well in on feed. The coming months will be exciting ones for our juniors! First off, the 2015 GOAL conference is being held in Guelph, Ontario, February 14-16, at the Delta Guelph hotel. The theme will be “Power of the Past- Force of the Future”. The GOAL Conference is a great place to network with other juniors, help build leadership skills, and have a great time, and I know that Ontario has put a lot of work into the Conference and that it will be an awesome event! The CJAA and CAF are sponsoring 8 travel bursaries to travel to Guelph for GOAL, so check out their website for more information on these and other awards offered by the CAF! The deadline for application is January 8. The CAF is also sponsoring another heifer voucher for $3000 that will be drawn at the GOAL Conference for one lucky participant. Also, just a reminder to start thinking about the Canadian Angus Foundation scholarship program for juniors called the Foundation Legacy Scholarship. Monies totalling $10,000 will be awarded to junior members at the GOAL conference, and the deadline to apply is January 15th, so take advantage of this great opportunity!

Showdown 2015 is being held in Olds, Alberta, July 16-18. I really hope that some BC juniors will think about travelling to Olds with or without cattle. It is going to be a tremendous show, right in the heart of Angus country and relatively close to get to. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about Showdown, I will be happy to answer them.

I would also like to thank all of the breeders that supported the juniors throughout the calendar fundraiser as well as Showdown sponsorship. Your generous support of the juniors is greatly appreciated and goes a long way towards our programs.

Finally, my term as the BC junior director is coming up this July, so if there is anyone who thinks they might be interested in the position, you can once again, get a hold of me or talk to our junior coordinator Belinda. The deadline for nomination is January 31. That’s all for now - Allison Speller.

BC Director, Canadian Angus AssociationBy Lorraine Sanford

Greetings,

I think we are all still pinching ourselves in disbelief as we look back on the fall run,it may have been long overdue...but oh so very sweet!

Your CAA board met the end of September at Angus Central, we had the opportunity to have a joint session with the Angus Foundation Board of Directors prior to our meetings. We welcomed 5 new Directors,so time was spent reviewing board policies and our vision for your association. Some time was also spent reviewing the CEO’s business plan, members can expect announcements regarding changes to member services and programming in the very near future. A couple of quick changes which our members should look into are minimum Scrotal Circumference have changed,as well limited space restriction on registration certificates will result in a different way of identifying genetic conditions. The Association would like to try and reduce the number of RFIs that are generated based on submitted membership work requests.

On a positive note, while membership in our (and all other) breed associations continues to decline, the number of new memberships is actually growing.

Please feel free to call or email me with any questions or concerns. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Holiday Season.

Sincerely,Lorraine

Field Man ReportBy Jack Brown, Field Man, B.C. Angus Association

province. The quality was second to none and the prices were where we have never seen them before. I was fortunate to have good weather most of the trip, on the way back to Kamloops it was a bit snowy, all the rest of the trip the weather was beautiful. Thanks to family and friends for providing accommodation for me once again this year.

The Angus influence was very evident again this year, the cattle in Vanderhoof displayed a bit more European genetics. These cattle when crossed with an Angus bull have a great set of calves. The Angus influence calves were getting at least 10 cents a pound more than other British breeds. In order to maintain this position our purebred breeders need to be very prudent in their bull selection for next spring’s bull sales. Now is not the time to scrimp on the quality of the bulls that will come to market next spring.

Once again the BC Angus Association held a jacket draw at each of the calf sales. This year we added another category that included the Auctioneers, Commercial Buyers and Yard Managers. The Jacket winners are as follows.

OK Falls, Darke Creek Ranch, Brad DeardenArmstrong, Toga Farms, Gail HanaKamloops, Willow Ranch, Wally HustonWilliams Lake, Chezacut Ranch, Kevin NewberryVanderhoof, Carmella Farms, Clarence FriesenDawson Creek, Wild Fire Land and Cattle Co. Ltd., Greg WilsonAuction staff and buyers, BC Livestock Co-op, Al Smith

This event is very popular with everyone. This is the seventh year for the draw, we have a lot of advertising out there every time someone wears their jacket to town.

On behalf of my wife Lorrie and myself, we would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Jack Brown, Fieldman, BC Angus.

Hello  everyone  -‐  I  hope  this  finds  you  well  and  ready  for  winter.    The  summer  provided  many  challenges  in  different  parts  of  the  province  with  drought  being  the  most  common.  I  hope  you  were  able  to  make  enough  hay  and  had  enough  pasture  to  see  your  cows  through.  The  up  side  has  been  the  incredible  cattle  prices  for  calves,  yearling  and  culls  –  hopefully  that  has  taken  the  sting  out  of  any  other  problems  you  may  have  encountered  this  year.

Many  things  have  happened  in  our  lives  this  year  and  it  is  with  very  mixed  emotions  that  we  take  this  time  to  inform  you  that  we  have  sold  our  cow  herd.  Clinton  Ollenberger  of  Goodlow,  B.C.  bought  all  of  our  breeding  females  and  the  herd  left  here  in  September.  Clinton  and  his  father,  Kelly,  run  an  extensive  commercial  herd  and  have  decided  to  add  the  purebreds  to  their  operation.  We  wish  them  all  the  best  in  their  new  endeavours.

Our  two  sons,  Jackson  and  Harrison,  have  made  the  decision  to  keep  a  group  of  heifer  calves  and  they  will  experiment  with  what  it  means  to  actually  “have  cows”  rather  than  just  helping  mom  and  dad  have  cows!    It  is  too  soon  to  say  where  this  will  lead  but  it  is  sure  to  be  interesting.

We  have  retained  all  of  our  2014  calves  and  will  be  doing  a  “farewell  tour”  of  the  bull  sales  in  the  spring.  We  will  have  bulls  at  the  Gumbo  Gulch  sale  in  Dawson  Creek  at  the  beginning  of  April  and  at  Williams  Lake  in  the  middle  of  April.  We  will  also  have  some  bulls  for  sale  from  home.  Please  keep  an  eye  on  our  website,  www.canyontreefarms.ca  ,  for  pictures  and  updates  about  the  bulls  as  the  information  becomes  available.  We  will  also  have  some  heifers  that  will  be  available  for  sale  as  open  yearlings  in  the  spring.    We  would  love  to  show  you  the  calves  so  if  you  are  ever  in  the  neighbourhood,  please  give  us  a  call  and  come  and  visit.

Thanks  for  your  time  and  I  look  forward  to  seeing  you  down  the  road.  Have  a  wonderful  winter.

Yours  truly,

CENTRAL INTERIOR AUCTIONS (auto & commercial vehi-cles) & HARVEST ANGUS (striving to be the envy of breeders and commercial cattle men everywhere), Prince George, BC

Tom & Carolyn de Waal - Owners

Tom deWaal seled in Prince George in 1990 where he started an auto aucon that would serve the North and central BC. It was also in June of 1990 that he would marry Carolyn, who also became acve in the operaon of the ventures that Tom became involved in.

Tom’s father was a dairy farmer out of Leduc, Al‐berta and was an inuence on his future in the cale industry. deWaal got the aucon bug in 1980 when he graduated from Reisch World Wide Auc‐

on College.

His talent as an auconeer was soon recognized as he began his journey and worked at Rimby Aucon Mart, did farm sales with veteran auconeer Alan Olsen and worked at Edmonton Public Stockyards for eight years. Tom was also creang a reputaon in the auto industry where he contracted with several auto auconeer rms in Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan. His weekly calendar was lled with sales, and with his energy and love for auconeering he maintained this pace for ve years. Tom worked with the best in the auto and cale industry and their knowledge and experse were soon to be part of deWaal’s success. Compeons were part of his career and he was soon recognized as a top bid caller in Western Canada.

deWaal always had an interest in Livestock and in 1982 he commenced buying Holsteins and started his ambion to become involved in Breeder Cale in Alberta where he con‐nues to have stock. In 2003, while owning and operang an auto aucon business in Prince George, he began buying beef cale in BC.  With the “mad cow” epidemic having a severe effect on the cale industry in Canada, Tom envi‐sioned an opportunity to invest and raise Black Angus “stock”. In 2014, he has over 250 head at the “Harvest An‐gus” ranch located near Prince George.

In 2013 deWaal was elected president of the Black Angus Associaon of BC for a two year term. At present, he has a cale ranch near Prince George where he specializes in “Black Angus” stock. His rm “Harvest Angus” has a high reputaon amongst breeders and his stock has won awards at livestock ex‐hibions throughout Canada and the USA.

makes their employment enjoyable.

Tom has served as director and President of the Auc‐oneers Associaon of BC for over 10 years. deWaal was one of the driving forces in having a successful associaon in BC while Wild Bill was Execuve Director. deWaal had great parents that taught him that there was no such thing as a free lunch – Good work ethic and being humble and honest will enhance your personal and professional life.

Tom says “Enjoy what you do and you will never work a day of your life”. deWaal never goes to aucon sales unless he buys, sells or works at the sale.

Tom and Carolyn have inuenced the lives of many people. Their involvement with their community has helped so many. deWaal’s legacy to us all is “Be the best at what you do”.
