It was a tranquil life they shared, each day spent lazily swimming around enjoying the sights and the sounds and the plentiful food the pond offered them. What a wonderful, worry-free life they led! But there was one, and only one, concern that faced them; only one mystery that confounded them. Every once in a while, one of their water bug friends would swim to the surface of the pond, disappear, and never come back. This had happened many times before. Many of their acquaintances would simply disappear at the surface. This was a great mystery to these two water bugs and their quiet, peaceful existence was often interrupted when one would ask the other, “I wonder where they went and why they never came back?” So, one day, as these two water bug friends were pondering the mystery of their disappearing friends, they made a pact with one another. “If either of us ever swims to the surface and disappears, we have to promise that we’ll come back and tell the other what happened.” They both agreed to do this so that the mystery of the disappearing water bugs might one day be resolved. And it happened. On one bright, warm, sunny day when life in the pond was particularly active, one of the water bug friends looked at the other and said, “I don’t know what’s happening to me, but I feel like I need to swim to the surface. My body feels sort of funny, like I’m about to jump out of my own skin.” The other bug said, “O.K. But remember our pact. If you swim to the surface and disappear, you’ve got to come back and tell me what happened. O.K?” “O.K.,” answered his water bug friend. And he began his slow swim to the surface. And he disappeared from sight. And he never came back to tell his friend what happened to him. Because, you see, once a nymph transforms into a dragonfly, it never returns to the water. If only we could know what happens to us when we die. If only loved ones, upon dying, could come back and tell us of their experience, tell us what happened to them. But they cannot. And we are left to ponder over questions that, in this life, will never be answered. Ruminations… In loving memory of Marguerite Bingham and Mildred Beaver

Years ago I remember reading the story of two water bugs that lived in a quiet pond. But we are people of faith. We have someone to believe in, someone to trust with all that we do not know and cannot fully understand, someone who has left us with abiding, living promises. Jesus alone is the one who has lived through death and is able to tell us and show us that death is simply a portal to a new life. Much like the life cycle of the dragonfly, one day each of us will go through a dramatic change that will take us away from one life and lead us into another, better, wonder-filled life. As believers in Jesus, our promise is that this world is not our home and this life is not our destiny. We are children of God, citizens of heaven, Paul tells us. We are all heaven-bound, and one day all of the mysteries of this life will be revealed to us and we will know then what we cannot know now. Until then, we walk by faith, not by sight, believing that there is one leading us through the darkness whose light will never grow dim. We call him Jesus and he is the light of the world, the light that no darkness can ever overcome. Thanks be to God for the light that will, one day, lead us all home.

With love…

Pastor Wayne
