Building Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family - The Journey of our Faith

August 25, 2019 - Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time“Praise the LORD all you nations; glorify him, all you peoples!” Ps 117:1

PRAISE!Breaking Open the Word – 21st Sunday in Ordinary TimeReadings: Isaiah 66:18-21 • Psalm 117:1-2 • Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 • Luke 13:22-30

OVERVIEW: God “desires all men to be saved to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim. 2:4). This week’s readings deal with the question of salvation and the Church’s mission, which is to “go out to all the world and tell the good news!” (Psalm 117). We have to assume that everyone we encounter can be saved, otherwise evangelization would be pointless. The passage from Isaiah was written around 520 B.C. at the end of the infamous Babylonian Captivity. Along with the restoration of Jerusalem came the hope that Israel would fulfill her divinely appointed mission to be a “light to the nations” (Is. 60:1-3). She would do so by manifesting the glory of God: “I come to gather nations of every language; they shall come and see my glory.” (Is. 66:18) The Hebrew word for “glory” is kabode, which is the same word is used to describe the manifestation of God at Mt. Sinai when he appeared in thunder and lightning. There, as in Isaiah, what is described is above all a liturgical event. “Nations of every language” will be brought together by God’s glory manifested in and through glorious worship. The “discipline” to which this week’s second reading refers is the persecution that the early Christians had been suffering. Hebrews was written to encourage Jewish converts who were in danger of abandoning the faith and returning to their old way of life. The letter focuses on the supremacy of Christ who is the perfect “reflection of the glory of God” (Heb. 1:3). This week’s gospel begins with a question that many of us have probably asked at one time or another: “Who will be saved?” Jesus doesn’t answer the question directly, but admonishes the questioner, and therefore each of us, to “strive to enter through the narrow gate.” It might seem that the gospel is the antithesis of the first reading, which is all-encompassing and inclusive. But they are actually two sides of the same coin: the kingdom of heaven is open to everyone, but everyone must pass through the “narrow gate” - Christ - who alone reveals the glory of God. The ‘door’ to heaven is open to all, but it is a very small door. To enter, one must stoop down and become small like a child. Only the humble of heart can enter the kingdom of heaven.

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: "Praise is the form of prayer which recognizes most immediately that God is God. It lauds God for his own sake and gives him glory, quite beyond what he does, but simply because HE IS. It shares in the blessed happiness of the pure of heart who love God in faith before seeing him in glory.” [no. 2639]

POPE FRANCIS: "Without humility, without the ability to publicly acknowledge your sins and your own human frailty, you cannot attain salvation nor proclaim Christ, nor pretend to be his witness.” [Morning meditation, June 14, 2013]

LIFE APPLICATION: The Eucharist is a participation in the glory of Christ the High Priest who offered his body “once for all” (Heb. 10:10). The supreme sacrifice of our Lord manifests God’s love – His glory – in a singular way. “God is enthroned on the praises of his people” the Psalmist says (Psalm 22:3) thus the glory of God is revealed in the praises of God’s people assembled for worship. Those who truly love God express themselves in adoration, praise and worship. In our highly secularized culture where the glory of God is hidden from view, the liturgy “pulls back the curtain” allowing God’s glory to shine forth. That is why beautiful music and liturgy is so important. Beauty allows the radiance of God to shine forth; and like moths to a flame people are naturally drawn in. When it comes to evangelization and the Church’s mission to save souls, we can never underestimate the power of beauty to attract people to God. Beautiful churches, beautiful music and beautiful liturgy are crucial. But living beautiful lives is even more important. If we wish to save souls we must strive to become holy, even as God is holy; merciful as God is merciful. In a word, we must strive to be saints.

FOOD DONATIONS FOR THE C.L.R.S. FOOD CLOSETThe food item for this week is PORK AND BEANS. The food closet is always in need of clean paper and plastic grocery bags. We are also in need of more egg cartons. Please leave them in the gray tubs at the entrances to the church. Please do not leave dairy products, fresh/frozen meats, baked goods, pastries or bread in the food bins. Drop off canned or packaged (unopened) products only. Thank you for your support.

URGENT MESSAGE FROM THE DIOCESEIt has come to our attention that a man calling himself "Fr. Manuel" or "Frey Manuel" is in the area providing "sacraments" of baptism, first Holy Communion and Quinceañeras for people in secular facilities or people's homes. Be advised he is NOT a Catholic priest and does not have faculties to administer the sacraments. Therefore, this makes the "sacraments" he administers canonically illicit, should not be registered in parish registers and should not be recognized as Catholic sacraments.

HOLY FAMILY TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY:

Discover Your Inheritance as a Child of God

Ephesians was one of the most widely circulated of St. Paul’s writings because of its powerful, practical instructions for disciples of Christ. In fact, its six short chapters contain some of the most discussed passages in the New Testament. The Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance study examines several much-discussed themes in today’s Christian culture and society–the nature of marriage, the purpose and role of the Church, the preeminence of grace in God’s plan, and the reality of spiritual warfare.

In this 8-session program, presenter Jeff Cavins explores what Paul’s letter to the Ephesians tells us about the nature of the Church¬–as a body, as a household, as a mystery, as a communion, as a bride, and as an army. Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance shows the treasures that await us as adopted sons and daughters in the family of God.

This is an 8-week study running every Tuesday morning from September 3, 2019 to October 22, 2019.

We will meet 9:15 for fellowship with study from 9:30-11:30 in the RCIA room of the Community Center.

Cost for the study is $30.

Please contact Jessica at [email protected] or call 916-899-0307 to reserve your space and study materials available for you at our first meeting. We have 14 slots left before we are full. Thank you!

“For steadfast is his kindness toward us, and the fidelity of the LORD endures forever." Psalm 117:2

As we continue to move forward with our plans for the repair and renovation of our church one area, we have not addressed is the area of the niches or sometimes referred to as the alcoves. This is the area that houses the statues of the saints, our blessed mother and saint Joseph. Several years ago, we covered up a problem that is now making itself known again. If you look at the bricks around the church, you will notice a white powdery substance on some of them. These spots are usually located near the downspout on the outside of the wall. Water splashing onto the bricks gets absorbed by the bricks which then brings the natural salts, that are in the bricks, to the inside surface, hence the white deposits. Several years ago, we cleaned the powdery substance from the bricks in the alcoves and painted the alcoves white. If you look carefully, the paint in the alcoves is starting to “blister” in several locations, indicating that the walls need to be addressed in terms of a more permanent repair.

In the last couple of weeks, Fr. Enrique has meet with our architect and with the liturgical art consultant team to explore our options concerning how we might repair and improve the appearance of those alcoves. Our Blessed Sacrament chapel was also discussed in terms of how we might make it more inviting and respectful of the real presence of our Lord. We are also considering options of how to also, respectfully, use the as a baby room during mass. Certainly, the blessed sacrament would not be present in the chapel while mass is being celebrated. There are of course repairs that need to be completed in the chapel as well. If you have spent time in the chapel, then you know that the lighting is less than ideal. We also have problems with keeping the pews tightened down to the floor and the wood paneling it the chapel is literally falling off the wall. In the end we should all desire to have a safer, beautiful chapel, respectful of the full presence of our Lord and more visible and inviting to everyone.

As always, thank you for your prayers and support for the success of the repair and renovation of your church.
