Vandex in-depth Waterproofing

How does Vandex work?Vandex cementitious waterproofingmaterials consist of ordinary Portlandcement, carefully graded quartzite sands, and a blend of activating chemicals.Vandex has two types of waterproofingproducts:1. Capillary active components which workby penetration of the product into theconcrete to provide in-depth waterproofingas shown below.2. Slurries and mortars which form awaterproofing barrier. The waterproofing effect of the capillaryactive Vandex products is produced by theVandex coating which forms a waterprooflayer and by activation of the chemicalswhich penetrate the concrete capillariesby the osmotic pressure of water. Here theVandex chemicals react with the free limein the concrete forming chemicalcomplexes which block the capillaries andvoids. Permeation of liquid water is nolonger possible whereas water vapour isstill allowed to pass. In addition, Vandex waterproofing layersprotect the concrete to a certain extentfrom exterior influences, such as carbonates, chlorides, sulphates and nitrates. Vandexbecomes an integral part of the concretestructure, forming with the concrete astrong and durable homogeneous body.

1. Concrete wall exposed to water. Thewater has forced its way into the capillaries.Long-term effect: leaky, damaged concrete.

2. After Vandex treatment: The reactionbetween the free lime, moisture and theVandex chemicals has set in. Vandexpenetrates the concrete forming chemicalcomplexes which substantially constrict thecapillaries.

3. The concrete is now watertight but stillallows water vapour to pass. The Vandexchemical complexes remain in the concrete, ready to reactivate upon water impact.
