Term 1 -Week 4 P & C meet THIRD Monday of every MONTH, 7.00pm Thursday February 16, 2012
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
This week:
Parking
Upcoming activities
School costs
Book packs
Rule of the Week
Canteen Treat Day
Parking problems
Traffic in Kimbarra Close is always chaotic at the end of the
school day and sometimes means rule-breaking from drivers.
Yesterday afternoon a tragedy was narrowly averted when a car
stopped in the one way circle near the driveway entrance and
reversed, narrowly missing a child. Luckily, the small child
concerned was pulled from danger by the parent.
There can be no choice between safety or convenience when the
lives of our children are at stake. If you drive a car to collect your
children you must consider the safety of your child as well as
others.
Here are some simple tips to make it safer for the children and
less stressful for the adults.
Safety tips for drivers using a „Drop-off and Pick-up‟ area
Always drop-off or pick-up your child from the designated area Drivers should remain in their vehicles at all times in the „Drop-
off and Pick-up‟ area. Make sure children use the footpath-side door when getting in
and out of a car. Make sure the hand brake is applied when the vehicle is stationary.
Never double park. Never park across a pedestrian crossing.
Never undertake a U-turn or reverse in close proximity to the school.
Safety tips for students
Stay buckled up until the vehicle has stopped in the „Drop-off and Pick-up‟ area. Make sure your school bag and other items are in a safe position,
eg on the floor. Be ready to get out of the car with your belongings when the car
has stopped and you have unbuckled your seatbelt.
Always get in and out of the back seat of the vehicle through the
safety door – the rear footpath-side door.
I have also posted a link to an RTA guide to road safety around
schools document on our website on the downloads page. Please
be interested to read it.
Upcoming activities
There are many school activities coming up early in the year. Please read the newsletter, check the website, check children‟s bags regularly for notes and look out for the roadside sign.
School costs
My promise last week could not be kept as a couple of costs had still not been advised along with some dates. However, I am distributing school costs advice today even though it is still draft
– my humble apologies.
Book packs Thank you for your assistance in securing your child‟s book pack – most children are now equipped. As I said last week, the first
year of our change back to a pack that contains stationery requirements was not without a little confusion and I appreciate
your kind support as we deal with the distribution and payments. I can clarify that book pack issue is on the basis that children own the equipment and teachers are not pooling the packs for
general classroom use. Teachers have been handing out equipment to individual students as needed and storing individual
packs for use when required.
We will take on board suggestions from office staff, teachers and
parents to streamline the process for 2013.

WEEK (WK 10)
Due to teacher
illness
From the Principal continued;
Rule of the Week This week‟s rules are about lining up. Teachers and students practised and talked about the following expectations that relate
to our school‟s four values of Care, Courtesy, Cooperation and Commonsense.
These expectations are important for the safety of students,
to be prepared, ready and organised for lessons and look respectable and represent KPS to adults, visitors etc.
Canteen Treat Day Next Tuesday‟s treat day is low-key. Linda will have pancakes
for sale at recess as it is Pancake Day. More details are included in this newsletter.
Although our pancake treat day falls on this day, it is not meant to be considered a religious observance. I thought you
may be interested in the history of Pancake Day though.
What is Pancake Day? Pancake Day (also known as Shrove
Tuesday) is the last day before the period which Christians
call Lent. It is traditional on this day to eat pancakes.
Why are pancakes eaten on Shrove Tuesday? Lent is a
time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is
the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods
that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day
because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were
forbidden during Lent.
When is Shrove Tuesday? (Pancake Day)? Shrove
Tuesday is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday and is
therefore the final day before the commencement of Lent, a
Christian festival leading up to Easter Sunday (Easter Day).
Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday,
so the date varies from year to year and falls between 3
February and 9 March.
Have a great week at our great school!

Principal
BRISBANE WATER ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
It has been brought to our attention that a number of students
from our affiliated schools will be competing at the NSW State Junior Championship for Nippers on the weekend leading up to
our zone swimming carnival. Our zone convener and executive members of the association have attempted various ways to
have the zone carnival re-scheduled, with no success.
The BWPSSA Swimming Carnival will therefore go ahead on Monday 5 March as planned.
As the NSW State Nippers is not considered a Department of Education & Communities event both the Regional Swimming
Convener and Sports Organiser have advised that no ‘special
entries’ will be accepted for the Regional Swimming Carnival and that all students who gain selection to compete at this
event must qualify through their respective school and zone carnivals. To try and assist those families and students return-
ing from the NSW State Junior Championship on the North Coast, we have decided to commence the BWPSSA Swimming
Carnival later than usual.
It is requested that team officials arrive at the Peninsula Leisure Centre by 11:00am ready for the first race to
commence no later than 11:30am.
The BWPSSA is committed to providing all students with the opportunity to participate in a variety of zone events where
students are able to demonstrate their individual and team
sporting talents. We wish all competitors the best of luck as they compete.

YARN-UP FOR ABORIGINAL FAMILIES
WHAT IS THE AECG?
The Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) is a community based voluntary organisation that has been
operating from a grass roots level since the late 1970s and is the peak advisory group for Aboriginal education in NSW.
The AECG caters for pre-school through to tertiary education.
WHAT CAN THE AECG DO FOR YOU?
The AECG is an avenue for parents and community members to have a “voice”. It‟s your chance as a parent,
caregiver or student to have a say in what happens in your child‟s education and be aware of what‟s happening in your
local school and community.
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
Membership is open to parents, Aunties, Uncles, caregivers and community members. Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
members are invited at a cost of $2 per year.
WHAT HAPPENS AT A MEETING/YARN-UP? Well first, we grab a cuppa, our meetings are short, very in-
formal and informative. An opportunity for you to voice your concerns, hear about opportunities for the kids and families
and meet new people - little ones are very welcome.
Our next AECG Yarn-up (as we call them) is on Wednesday March 7, from 6.00 pm at Kincumber High School.
Enquiries: Tjudibaring AECG President,
Kerry Turner 0424 686 329.
