INTRODUCTION

The C-17 Globemaster III is a high-wing, 4-engine, T-tailed military-transport aircraft used by the US Air Force and its Allies. The multi-service C-17 can carry large equipment, supplies and troops directly to small airfields in harsh terrain anywhere in the world day or night. The massive, sturdy, long-haul aircraft tackles distance, destination and heavy, oversized payloads in unpredictable conditions. It has delivered cargo in every worldwide operation since the 1990s. This Virtavia product is available for both X-Plane 9.70 and X-Plane 10.10

INSTALLATION

To install the aircraft simply unzip the downloaded file to your X-Plane directory. For example: X-Plane 10/Aircraft/Virtavia C-17 Globemaster III.

Please see the ‘Package Contents’ section on page 5 for more details on what is included in this package.

The exterior model has all the usual animations such as ailerons, elevators, landing gear, speed-brakes, rudder etc as well as some custom ones:

All animations can also be operated via the 3D menu accessed via the ‘MENU’ button below the pilots side HUD. There also buttons on the centre console.

*Note: To open the rear ramp fully for loading, select it via the centre console switch.

The thrust reversers are operated with:

- the ‘.’ (full stop) key in X-Plane 9

- and the ‘Shift’+ ‘/’ keys in X-Plane 10

SOUNDS

The C-17 Globemaster III features the amazing and unique DreamEngine sound plugin from DreamFoil Creations. This allows a much greater control over sounds in X-Plane.

It really brings the C-17 to life, from the deafening roar of the engines at the back to the shrill scream of the fans at the front, you’ll feel like you’re standing next to the real thing as it thunders past.

With 3D positional sound technology, the pitch, tone and type of sound changes as you move around the aircraft, just like the real thing, and with layered sound it allows a smooth transition between multiple sound samples for a better experience.

SYSYEM SETTINGS

The C-17 is a large aircraft, texture-rich and featuring many 3D objects all working at the same time. Like many of the other high quality pay-ware airliners it will place demands on your system and it may struggle at higher settings on old hardware. However if you can run some of the other high performance aircraft available at present, you shouldn’t have any problems with the C-17.

The recommended field of view is 80-90 degrees.

Recommended system requirements:

IMPORTANT: The aircraft file (C-17_Globemaster_III.acf) is by default for X-Plane 10. X-Plane 9 requires a slightly different version which you’ll find in the folder ‘X-Plane 9 Aircraft file’ together with a read-me file. All other texture and object files are the same.

ALTERNATIVE VIEWPOINTS

There are several different custom viewpoints in the cockpit to make navigating around the cabin easier. The viewpoint buttons can be found just below the HUD on the pilots side. To ensure they work correctly, activate them when the camera is pointing forward, i.e. press the ‘w’ key.

3D Menu

The C-17 is equipped with a unique animated 3D menu. It allows users to adjust fuel simply by clicking and dragging each blue fuel tank level to adjust. The same method is used for cargo. The cargo hold will automatically fill with cargo pallets, increasing in number depending on the cargo quantity entered. When you reach max aircraft weight, the total weight digital display will turn red. There are also options to open and close aircraft doors and the rear ramp. Close the menu in the top right corner.

MAIN PANELS

1) Cockpit lighting. Left knob controls the EFIS panels and other digital glass displays, right knob controls the instrument back-lighting.

2) HUD main On / Off switch.

3) HUD brightness.

4) HUD folding click zone.

5) Attention grabber lamps. Top to bottom - Ground Proximity (under 500ft w. gear up), overspeed, stall, master warning, master caution. The master lamps have a 'press to reset' function.

6) CNC 'Communication Navigation Control'.

A) XFER - swaps standby and active frequencies.

B) IDENT - squawks ident.

C) C1 - selects COMM1.

D) C2 - selects COMM2.

E) V/L1 - selects NAV1.

F) V/L2 - selects NAV2.

G) FREQ - adjust displayed frequency. Larger knob alters MHz, smaller knob alters KHz. Click either side of the large knob to adjust and drag the small knob to adjust.

H) CRS - in V/L1 and V/L2 modes, this rotary knob changes the course value.

I) ADF - selects ADF.

J) IFF - selects transponder mode. Use FREQ knob to set.

7) Custom viewpoint buttons.

8) Clock. Pressing the 'CTRL' button starts and stops the stopwatch, the ‘SEL’ button resets the timer.

9) MFD screens. 4 identical screens provide 6 selectable screens:

PFD (Primary Flight Display).

ND (Navigation Display).

ENG1 (Engine 1 Display).

ENG2 (Engine 2 display).

CFG (Configuration Display) shows positions of control surfaces, landing gear and hydraulic pressure information.

MAP (GPS map display) shows the standard X-Plane EFIS map including weather.

The knob at the lower left corner can be set OFF or DAY.

You can also hide the pilots control column by clicking on the Pilots PFD screen. Below this screen there is also a knob to adjust both sets of pedals.

10) ATS/AP warning lamp. Illuminates when either auto-throttle or autopilot is engaged. SPEEDBRAKE and SINKRATE lamps.

11) Total Fuel Indicator. Displays total fuel quantity on board. The square lamp illuminates 'LOW' when total fuel reaches 16,000 lbs.

12) BDHI Selector Knobs. These toggle the pointers on the adjacent BDHI to show ADF rather than NAV1 and NAV2, which is their default status. 'ADF' will appear in the display window on the BDHI where the present NAV1/2 DME distance normally displays.

13) Bearing, Distance, Heading Indicator (BDHI). This RMI-type display has two pointers indicating the presently set NAV1 and NAV2 frequencies. These can be toggled to ADF using the adjacent selector knobs (see (11) above). Two DME display windows indicate the current distance to the selected station (if available).

14) Standby Artificial Horizon.

15) Standby Altitude / Airspeed Indicator. Self-explanatory. The small knob bottom left adjusts the barometric setting (Kohlsman). The value set will also be repeated on the PFD Primary Flight Display screen.

CENTRE PANEL

1) Fire Extinguisher Handles. These 4 (one for each engine) T-bar handles will both shut down the engine and extinguish the fire when activated. Pull to activate.

2) AFCS (Automatic Flight Control System). This is the autopilot control panel of the C-17.

A) F/D - toggles the Flight Director, arm this before engaging AP servos (O).B) APPR - primes approach mode to grab a localizer and glideslope.C) GPS - selects autopilot navigation source, Nav 1, Nav 2 or GPS.D) DCLT - HUD de-clutter, step through 3 HUD display modes.E) Cat I / Cat II operations (not functional).F) Toggle airspeed / mach number display.G) Adjust autopilot airspeed / mach number.H) Adjust autopilot heading.I) Y/D - Yaw damper.J) SPD HOLD - Speed hold mode.K) NAV1 HOLD - Arm autopilot VOR/LOC mode.L) HDG HOLD - Heading hold mode.M) BC - Back course mode.N) ATS - Auto-throttle switch.O) AP - Autopilot servos, activate Flight director FD (A) first.P) Roll rate - Regular or Minimum.Q) ALT HOLD - Altitude hold mode.R) Adjust autopilot vertical speed (automatically snaps to the nearest 100ft) Drag DOWN to INCREASE the vertical speed and vice versa.

3) Aileron Trim Gauge. Drag the left or right sides of the gauge to trim the aircraft roll axis.

4) Stabiliser Trim Gauge. Drag the upper or lower halves of the gauge to trim the aircraft pitch axis.

5) Rudder Trim Gauge. Drag the left or right sides of the gauge to trim the aircraft yaw axis.

6) Standby Engine Display (SED). This unit is a digital display of actual engine N2/EPR, EGT, N1, EPR rating, and mode selected. N2 and EPR cannot be viewed at the same time, so a mode switching knob (lower left side) selects OFF/N2/EPR. In EPR mode, several more functions become available. The normal blue EPR rating chevrons on the engine display will change to a solid blue horizontal line in this mode and the five buttons on the right of the SED unit become active, as does the rotary knob on the upper left side. The default EPR (Engine Pressure Ratio) rating is provided by the MAN button, this allows the value to be manually set using the rotary knob, top left

on the unit. The other four buttons provide presets for various EPR ratings (thrust levels). Use caution when experimenting with these as they will adjust engine thrust and this is unwise when on the ground or at low level. From top to bottom, the presets are as follows : Maximum, Intermediate, Maximum Continuous Thrust, Derated Thrust and Manual Control.

7) Flaps Gauge. The Flap Position indicator dial shows flap positions from fully retracted (0°) to fully extended (40.5°). It is graduated in 4° tick marks with labels every 8°.

8) Speed-brake Position Indicator. Shows the position of the spoilerons on the upper surfaces of the wings. Speed-brakes can be activated with keys ‘3’ and ‘4’.

9) Landing Gear Lever. When the gear is in transit, the five lamps will illuminate red until the gear is latched. The lamps can be tested by pressing the test button. The Lock Release button is presently non-functional.

10) Brake Pressure Gauge. Indicates the hydraulic pressure within the braking system.

11) Slat Position Annunciators. The upper 'Slat Extend Annunciator' illuminates green when the leading edge wing slats are fully extended. The lower 'Slat Disagree Annunciator' will light when the slats are in transit and will extinguish once they are fully extended.

12) Auto-brake switch. Activate this and the aircraft will automatically deploy the wheel brakes on landing.

CENTRE CONSOLE

1) Mission Computer Displays (MCD). The MCD's are non-interactive, although each can be independently switched on or off. They display useful aircraft and communication information.

2) Flight Management System (FMS).

3) Flight Management System keyboard, used for entering flight plans. You can also load and save flight plans.

4) Cabin Pressurisation Panel (CPP). Along the top edge of the CPP, there are three gauges - Cabin Differential Pressure Indicator (shows the difference between the cabin pressure and the ambient atmospheric pressure in pounds per square inch (PSI), the Cabin Altitude Indicator (shows pressure altitude of the cabin in feet x 1,000), and the Cabin Altitude Rate Indicator (shows the rate of cabin altitude change in feet per minute x 1000).

5. Throttle Levers. You can activate reverse thrust by pressing the ‘.’ (full stop) key in X-Plane 9 and the Shift+/ keys in X-Plane 10. The levers can then also be pulled back for reverse thrust.

6) Secondary auto-throttle switch.

7) EFIS Map zoom range.

8) EFIS Map options, show weather, airports VORs etc.

9) Altimeter setting knob and Decision height knob (use lower larger knob to switch between the two).

10) Missile Warning System Control Indicator (MWS). This system is not simulated in X-Plane so it is just represented by a switchable display.

11) Parking Brake Levers.

12) Pitch Trim Levers.

13) Flaps lever. Flaps can be activated using keys ‘1’ and ‘2’.

14) Aircraft defensive system. To deploy flares you must first arm the system using the small green button then deploy with the large red button.

15) Doors and rear ramp operating panel. Also includes tail and fuselage flood lights (X-Plane 10 only).

16) Cargo hold and cockpit floor lighting controls.

2) Environmental Panel.

1 - Engine/APU Bleed Air switches (5).

2) Left Air Conditioning Pack.

3) Right Air Conditioning Pack.

The various digital readouts indicate simulated temperatures supplied to and from the air-con packs and to and from the three environmental zones - Flight Compartment, Crew Rest Compartment and the Cargo Compartment.

3) IGN Engine Igniter Switches. These must be ON in order to start each engine.

4) APU Panel.

1 - APU Start/Run Switch.

2 - APU RPM Display. The RPM will quickly run up to 100% once the APU is started. Releasing the switch from the 'start' position too early will stop the RPM from increasing. It must be at 100% in order to start the engine.

3 - APU Exhaust Gas Temperature. Will climb to maximum 401 deg. C.

5) HYD Panel. This area of the overhead is not interactive, it merely displays the status of the four hydraulic pump systems. Auxiliary pump lamp will come on to prime the Primary and Secondary pumps. Once the pressure in the system has reached 4,000 PSI, the Auxiliary pump stops and the Primary and Secondary pumps take over. The digital readouts along the top display the simulated temperature and quantity remaining of the hydraulic fluid in the four systems.

7) Fuel Panel.

1 - Fuel Dump Switch. Pressing this switch will dump fuel from the aircraft.

2 - Left Master Air Refuelling Valve. Both this switch AND the Right Master Air Refuel Switch must be ON, and the aircraft must be airborne, for air refuelling to take place. The 'Amplifier Override' lamp on the windscreen centre pillar will also illuminate when either one of the master valve switches is pressed.

3 - Air Refuelling Door Unlocked Annunciator - this lamp comes on when both the Left and Right Master Air Refuelling Valves are switched on. At the same time, the 'Ready' and 'Latched' lamps on the windscreen centre pillar will illuminate.

4 - Right Master Air Refuelling Valve. See 'Left Master Air Refuelling Valve'.

5 - Fuel pump switches, one for each engine.

6 - Fuel Shutoff Valves (4). Use these to stop the engines. Ensure that they are ON before starting the engines.

7 - Ignition Switch. Switch on to start engines. Can be switched off once all engines are running. Must be also used for mid-air relight.

8 - Engine Starter Valves (4). Click and drag down to start the appropriate engine. Make sure that either the APU is at 100% OR another engine is already running, the Fuel Shutoff Valves are ON the Engine Igniter switches are on and the Ignition Switch (below) is ON.

4 - Pitot Heater Switches. Pilot and Co-Pilot. The default state is illuminated amber, indicating that the Pitot Heat is OFF. The other lamps are not illuminated unless switched ON.

9) Lights and WACAP Panels

9 - Anti-collision lights switch. Switches the wingtip strobe lights on/off.

10 - Formation Lights Switch. Toggles the fuselage 'Slime Lights', ie. the formation markers at various locations on the aircraft exterior.

11 - Re-fuelling port light lights switch.

12 - WACAP (Warning and Caution Annunciation Panel). This displays a fixed set of warning prompts.

13 - WACAP Dimmer. One-stage dimming of the WACAP display.

14 - WACAP Test Button. Press to display the full range of warnings.

NORMAL PROCEDURESEngine Start:

1. Set parking brake (center console, left side).2. Check throttles are at IDLE.3. Check all switches are OFF including APU.4. Turn on the Master Battery switch on the overhead electrical panel.5. Turn on the Master Avionics switch on the overhead electrical panel.6. Check WACAP on overhead for messages.7. Check Fuel Quantity is sufficient.8. Request clearance to start engines.9. Set an MFD to display ENG 2.10. Turn on NAV lights (overhead panel).11. Turn on ANTI-COLLISION lights (overhead panel).12. Turn on ENGINE IGNITION (overhead panel).13. Turn on IGN Igniter switches.14. Press and hold APU Starter switch to 'start'. Wait until 100% RPM reached and set

to 'run' position (overhead panel).15. Turn Engine 1 Shutoff switch to ON (vertical position) (overhead panel).16. Switch on Fuel Pump 1 (overhead panel).17. Pull down ENG1 Starter switch (overhead panel). Hold until EGT rises and N2

Taxi:1. Prior to taxi check flight control surfaces by moving joystick and rudder pedals and

verifying control surface movements on the CFG (Configuration) MFD on the main panel.

2. The C-17 will require a different amount of thrust to break away depending on weight. It is not unusual at high gross weights to use up to 70% N1 to start rolling.

3. Use the lowest amount of thrust necessary to start rolling. Using excessive amounts of thrust will cause you to accelerate faster than intended. Remember, engines are still producing thrust as they spool back down to idle.

4. Once you attain 12-15kts of taxi speed slowly reduce power. The aircraft will taxi at just above idle thrust, but may require slightly more at high gross weights.

5. Use maximum nose wheel steering deflection whenever possible. The use of differential braking is discouraged due to heat build-up in the brakes.

Before Takeoff:1. Check Brakes, Steering and Control Stick free movement.2. Check Flight Instruments, Engine RPM, EGT levels normal.3. Set Take-off flaps and slats as required.4. Apply nose-up trim as necessary, either using the main panel Trim gauge or the

centre console levers.5. Taxi lights OFF, Landing lights ON.

Takeoff Procedure:

1. Hold brakes and slowly increase power to approximately 80% N1. When engine readings appear stable, release brakes and increase power to maximum.

2. Accelerate to rotation speed and slowly pull back on the stick to attain a 2.5°/sec pitch rate to 10° and hold.

As soon as positive climb rate is verified, raise landing gear.Adjust trim as necessary after gear has retracted to maintain 12°-15° hands-free.Retract trailing edge flaps.Once trailing edge flaps are fully retracted, select desired Climb Thrust (MCT) or (INT) on the SED (main panel).Retract leading edge slats.Carry out After Takeoff Check (Gear UP, Flaps/Slats RETR., Spoilers OFF, Anti-Ice ON as required).Proceed to Cruise checklist.

Cruise:1. Check altitude and all altimeters. 2. Anti-Ice, as required.3. Check cabin altitude on the Cabin Pressurization Panel (centre console).4. En-route Descent:1. Normal descents should be made at Mach .74 until reaching 310 KCAS, gear and

flaps retracted.2. Maintain 310 KCAS until approaching 10,000ft.3. Maintain 250 KCAS below 10,000ft until configuring for approach.

Penetration Descent:1. Penetration descents should be made at Mach .74 until reaching 310 KCAS, gear

and flaps retracted.2. Use speed brakes and slats to maintain 230-250 KCAS until approaching 1,000ft.3. Begin level-off at 1,000ft above the penetration altitude by halving rate of descent.4. Maintain 180-255 KCAS, depending on Gross Weight (300,000 - 600,000lbs).

Tactical Descent:1. Tactical descents should be made at Mach .80 until reaching 320 KCAS, gear and

flaps retracted, speed brakes out and idle reverse thrust.2. Use speed-brakes and slats to maintain 230-250 KCAS until approaching 2,000ft.3. Begin level-off at 2,000ft.4. Maintain 180-255 KCAS, depending on Gross Weight (300,000 - 600,000lbs).

Approach:

1. Anti-Ice as required.2. Pitot Heaters ON as required.3. APPR mode ON on AFCS.4. Exterior Lights ON.5. Altimeters, check and set barometric pressure.6. If aircraft is holding, maintain 230 KCAS.7. Lower landing gear at or below 250 KCAS if landing.8. Set Flaps to 3/4 (3° approach) or FULL (up to 5° approach).9. Hold Descent Rate at 1000 fpm.10. If performing a touch-and-go, select MAX Thrust Rating on the SED (main panel).

11. Proceed to Landing checklist.

Before Landing:1. Slats, Flaps set correctly.2. Landing Gear DOWN, five green lights.

Landing:1. Landing phase is 300ft AGL through Rollout.2. Establish on the approach path to the desired runway.3. Plan for a -1° to -1.5° and 240 fpm sink rate to touchdown.4. Begin maximum wheel braking, deploy speed-brakes and full reverse thrust.5. Once aircraft is sufficiently slowed, retract speed-brakes and turn off reverse thrust.6. Once onto taxiway, turn off Landing Lights and turn Taxi lights ON.

Go-around/missed approach:

1. If performing a go-around or missed approach, immediately increase power to maximum.

2. Retract the landing gear as soon as positive rate of climb is verified.3. Retract flaps to position 1.4. Maintain approximately 230 KIAS in the pattern until another approach can be

conducted, then proceed to descent/approach checklist, step 7 and continue.

Engine Shutdown:

1. Turn off all exterior lights.2. Turn off Engine Ignition and IGN switches.3. Set Parking Brake.4. Turn off generators.5. Switch Avionics to OFF.6. Close Fuel Shutoff Switches.7. Switch all other systems OFF.8. Open exits as required.9. Once crew chief has verified complete shutdown with no engine fires, turn off

Interior Lights.10. Switch Battery to OFF.
