C-03 Calculating Slopes Part 1

Warm-Up

For each of the following problems…

a) Identify the slope (some problems may need to be solved for y first)

b) What type of line is it? What type of slope is it?

c) What would a parallel slope be? What would a perpendicular slope be?

1. 3𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 15 2. 𝑦 = 10

3. 𝑥 = 5 4. 2𝑦 = −6𝑥 + 18

The second thing we are focusing on with slopes is calculating slopes.

We have a specific formula we can use to find slope:

This will always be provided for you on my tests. You just need to know how and when to use it,

There are 4 ways you could be asked to find a slope.

Situation 1: Finding the Slope from a Graph

To find the slope from a graph, you do not need the slope formula. You just need to be able to

count.

First ask yourself- is the graph horizontal or vertical? Those slopes are special and do not require

counting. Horizontal lines have a slope of _________ and vertical lines have a slope of _______________.

If you have a slanted graph, simply look for two points where the line perfectly crosses through the

graph points. Count how many units up/down and to the right you need to go from the first point to

the second point. Just like reading a sentence, you must always read graphs from _______ to _______.

Find the slope for each of the following graphs.

Example 1: Example 2:

Example 3: Example 4:

Situation 2: Finding the Slope from Two Points

To find the slope from two points, you do need the slope formula. Let’s write it again:

I recommend labelling your two points with 𝑥1, 𝑥2, 𝑦1, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦2 to make using your slope formula easier.

For each of the following, find the slope generated between the two points.

Example 5: (-4, 11) and (2, 5) Example 6: (-3, -1) and (-3, 1)

Example 7: (5, 2) and (-7, 2) Example 8: (-3, -1) and (3, 1)
