1. Byzantine Empire

• The Eastern Roman Empire; continued for 1000 years after the West fell.

2. Constantine

• First Emperor to convert to Christianity.

• Moved the capital of the Roman Empire to a former Greek trading city known as Byzantium.

• Renamed Byzantium after himself: Constantinople.

3. Constantinople• The capital of the Byzantine

Empire, named for Emperor Constantine. Location was perfect for trade

Once upon a time, there was a quiet village called “Byzantium”

Emperor Constantine liked it, so he decided to move the capital of Rome here

After some sprucing up, it was renamed Constantinople (because only the best emperors get stuff named after them)

This place is much better than Rome!

Justinian became emperor of the East in 527 AD. A strong ruler, Justinian tried to take back the Western empire from the barbarians.
