TALE OF THE TAPE

UTAH FALLS 31-20 AGAINST NORTH-WESTERN IN HOLIDAY BOWLSAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Utah football program jumped out to a 17-point lead in the first half against Northwestern, but after a second half scoring run by the Wildcats, the Utes fell 31-20.

Jason Shelley finished the game 27-of-35 passing for a career-high 302 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions in the game. With the rushing game struggling in the game, Jaylen Dixon stepped up for a career-high nine receptions, going for 114 yards and a touchdown.

The Utes got going on offense in the first quarter after driving down field 62 yards, thanks in large part to big plays from Solomon Enis, Shelley and Dixon. A 12-yard rush down the middle from Shelley put Utah on the Northwestern 27-yard-line with the redshirt freshman quarterback capping it off with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Dixon to give Utah a 7-0 lead.

After a big fourth down stop by John Penisini, Shelley kept the offensive tempo in Utah's favor as he drove down field, connecting with Jake Jackson for a 21-yard pass to the Northwestern five-yard-line. Jackson wasn't done yet, linking up with Shelley once more for a four-yard pass to the end zone to put the Utes up 14-0 with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter.

Northwestern was able to get on the scoreboard with 8:42 on the clock in the second quarter after driving to the Utah three-yard-line. The Utes put up a strong defensive stand with Ballard and Blaire making key stops at the goal line, forcing the Wildcats to a 21-yard field goal to make it 14-3.

Utah's All-American kicker Matt Gay countered with a field goal of his own though with 3:57 left in the quarter, knocking in a 32-yarder to make it 17-3. It put an end to an 11-play, 57-yard drive that burned 4:39 off the game clock.

Gay punched in a 20-yard field goal with five seconds left in the second quarter to give the Utes a 20-3 lead heading into halftime, but the tides turned as the third quarter got underway. Northwestern went on to score 28 unanswered points in the third to take a 31-20 lead.

Northwestern's first score of the streak came at the heels of a Utah interception, finishing the drive off with a four-yard passing touchdown to make it a 10-point game. After three-and-outs by both teams, the Utes got the ball back and put together a strong drive to the Northwestern six-yard-line, but Utah fumbled the ball in the red zone with the Wildcats recovering the ball and running it back for an 82-yard touchdown.

The Wildcats didn't let up as they scored again with 4:39 on the clock after another Utah fumble gave them possession of the ball. Northwestern scored on a 20-yard pass, making it 24-20 to end a two-play, 31-yard drive.

The scoring frenzy continued as Utah continued to struggle to get going on offense in the second half, going for another three-and-out to give the ball back to Northwestern. The Wildcats drove down field for 67 yards, finishing the drive with an eight-yard rushing touchdown to give them an 11-point lead with 1:40 left in the quarter.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth quarter, but turnover woes continued for the Utes on offense, keeping them away from the end zone. The Utes fumbled the ball on their final possession, allowing Northwestern to run out the final two minutes of the game for the win.

MISSIONSBrigham Young University is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The missionary emphasis of the Church is perhaps one of its most recognized characteristics.

Since the organization of the Church in 1830, over one million missionaries have served. The Church operates more than 400 missions around the world in over 150 nations speaking more than 160 languages. More than 67,000 missionaries representing the Church are serving proselytizing missions around the world. Most of the Church’s proselytizing missionaries are young men between the ages of 18 and 26. A substantial number of young women and older couples also serve proselytizing missions. Missionaries work long hours — seven days a week for two years (or 18 months for women and couples) — teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and participating in community service.

About 65 percent of the current team has served a mission. Members of the team have served in 28 different countries and six of the seven continents around the globe. More than 30 members of the team (previous signees or on roster) are currently serving in the mission field.

HONOR CODEBYU’s Honor Code helps maintain this learning environment. Initiated by students in 1949, the Honor Code emphasizes being honest, living a chaste and virtuous life, abstaining from alcohol and tobacco, using clean language, and following other values in line with the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

POLYNESIAN PIPELINEThe Polynesian Islands have become a hotbed for recuiting in recent years, but BYU has been one of the pioneers in bringing these players from Tonga, Samoa, the Hawaiian Islands and all of Polynesia to the forefront of college football since the early 1950s. About 40 members of the current roster are of Polynesian descent.

Some of BYU’s most celebrated and decorated players have come from the Pacific islands, including All-Americans, national record holders, players who have gone on to compete in the NFL and now, several members of BYU’s current coaching and support staff.

Kalani Sitake was named BYU’s 14th head coach on Dec. 19, 2015, becoming the first Tongan head football coach in the NCAA. His staff includes Polynesians Ilaisa Tuiaki, Fesi Sitake, Nu’u Tafisi, Jack Damuni, Jasen Ah You, Alema Fitisemanu, Vince Feula, Matt Ah You and Harvey Unga.

FORMER PLAYERS ON STAFFThere are 15 former BYU football players on the football and athletic admnistration staff. Members of the staff were part of Cougar teams that won the 1980 “Miracle Bowl,” the 1984 National Championship, 1996 Cotton Bowl along with many other accolades. 2019 OPPONENTS

BYU TOPS WESTERN MICHIGAN 49-18 IN FAMOUS IDAHO POTATO BOWL BOISE, Idaho – Freshman quarterback Zach Wilson was a perfect 18 of 18 for 317 yards and four touchdowns and led BYU to a 49-18 win over Western Michigan Friday afternoon in the 2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Wilson set the BYU single-game record with his 18 consecutive completions and earned MVP honors. Senior linebacker Sione Takitaki led the defensive with his own career-best 19 total tackles.

Senior Dylan Collie led all receivers with 124 yards and two touchdowns on six receptions. Riley Burt totaled the most yards on the ground with a career-best 110 and one touchdown.

BYU exploded for 42 second-half points, the most in any half this year. The Cougar defense held WMU scoreless in the third quarter while the offense posted 28 points in the third after coming out of halftime down 10-7. BYU scored 35 unanswered points en route to the victory.

The Cougars posted 490 yards of total offense and held Western Michigan to just 313 for the game. The Broncos entered the game No. 30 in total offense at 447.2 yards per game.

BYU found the end zone first as Wilson threw a 26-yard pass to Collie for the first touchdown of the game. After a shanked punt from Western Michigan that only went nine yards, the Cougars were set up on Bronco’s 27-yard line. On second down, Wilson connected with Collie putting BYU up 7-0 with 2:20 left in the first quarter.

Trailing 10-7, the Cougars came out at halftime quickly taking the momentum, scoring unanswered touchdowns on all four of their drives in the quarter. BYU got in the end zone to open up the half on only three plays. A 48-yard pass to Neil Pau’u gave the Cougars momentum, as Wilson again found Collie as he grabbed his second touchdown pass of the game, an 8-yard reception to make the score 14-10 with 13:14 left on the clock.

On the next BYU drive, Burt got into the end zone on a 37-yard sprint to the end zone. After a 20-yard reception by Dallin Holker, Burt split two Bronco defenders running down the field to get into the end zone and make the score 21-10.

It only took one play to score another touchdown as Aleva Hifo caught a 70-yard bomb down the sideline with one hand to put the Cougars ahead 28-10. After the touchdown, Austin Lee inter-cepted the ball and returned it 26 yards to the Bronco 32-yard line. On a trick play with Austin Kafentzis under center, the ball was pitched to Dayan Ghanwoloku lined up at tailback who went over center for a one-yard touchdown, putting the score at 35-10 with 2:47 left in the third quarter.

BYU continued scoring on consecutive drives into the fourth quarter as Wilson found Dax Milne for his first career touchdown. Collie caught a 31-yard strike from Wilson to set up the Cougars on the 7-yard line. Two plays later, Wilson found Milne in the end zone on a 5-yard pass to increase BYU’s led to 42-10.

Western Michigan scored their second touchdown of the game after giving up 35-unanswered points to the Cougars as Bronco quarterback Kaleb Eleby pushed over center putting six points on the board. After a successful two-point conversion, the score stood at 42-18 with 7:37 left on the clock.

The Cougars tacked on another touchdown as senior quarterback Tanner Mangum found Collie for a 41-yard pass before Brayden El-Bakri ran the ball in for one yard, making the score 49-18.

Kalani Sitake (pronounced kah-lah-nee see-tah-kay) enters his fourth season overseeing the BYU football program in 2019.

A former Cougar running back (1994, 1997-2000), Sitake is the 14th head coach in BYU history and just the fourth since 1972, when Hall of Fame coach LaVell Edwards took over the program. Sitake is the first former player under Edwards to be named head coach at BYU.

Named BYU’s head coach on December 19, 2015, Sitake returned to his alma mater with 15 years of coaching experience, including seven seasons a defensive coordinator and four years as an assistant head coach. He came to BYU from Oregon State, where he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2015 under head coach Gary Andersen. Sitake spent the prior 10 seasons at the University of Utah under head coach Kyle Whittingham. He started at Utah in 2005 as the linebackers coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2009 before also being named assistant head coach in 2012. He coached 12 all-conference honorees at Utah, including Morris Trophy winners Star Lotulelei (2011) and Nate Orchard (2014).

During his career, Sitake has helped mentor 23 NFL Draft picks, including BYU linebackers Sione Takitaki and Fred Warner and running back Jamaal Williams. Takitaki was a third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in this year’s draft and Warner was one of the league’s top rookies after being taken in the third round in 2018 by the San Francisco 49ers. Williams, who was selected in the fourth round by the Green Bay Packers in the 2017 NFL Draft, finished his BYU career as the school’s all-time leading rusher after averaging the nation’s fifth-best per-game totals at 137.5 yards per outing for Sitake’s Cougars in 2016.

Sitake has coached in 10 bowl games during his career and has been on the winning side in nine of those 10 contests, including a 2-0 mark as a head coach. BYU is coming off a 49-18 victory over Western Michigan in last year’s Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and defeated Wyoming 24-21 in the 2016 Poinsettia Bowl.

Sitake began his coaching career in 2001 as the defensive backs and special teams coach at Eastern Arizona before becom-ing a defensive graduate assistant at BYU in 2002 under Gary Crowton. Sitake then joined the staff at Southern Utah where he coached running backs, tight ends and offensive line during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

He began his BYU playing career in 1994 prior to serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Oakland, California. After returning and redshirting in 1997, Sitake was a three-year starter at fullback for the Cougars from 1998-2000 under Edwards. A team captain as a senior, Sitake’s last game as a player was also the last game coached by the legendary Edwards, who was a great mentor for Sitake.

Born in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, and raised in Laie, Hawai’i and Provo, Utah, Sitake is the nation’s first FBS head football coach of Tongan descent. He graduated from BYU in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in English. Sitake and his wife Timberly have three children, Skye, Sadie and Kelaokalani (KK).
