School Donations: Building A Better Foundation

Please donate before 30 June 2019 for a tax deduction in the 2018/2019 financial year

The school has established two tax deductible funds to enable parents, relatives and friends

the opportunity to make donations. The Building Fund has provided financial support to

complete our school hall renovations, install reverse cycle air-conditioning units in every

classroom and construct classroom computer centres. Our next plan for the Building Fund is

to work towards additions to our ten new classrooms and improvement for our hall and playground infrastructure. The Library Fund

will continue to supply books for guided reading and engaging interactive online

resources. This fund will continue to expand reading resources and technology for literacy

learning. You can visit our website to download and complete a donor card. Your support is sincerely appreciated.

was won by Zoe W 5R and Tempe W 6W; the Sports Power voucher was won by Lyn Fardon; the Basiloco voucher won by the Cox family and the Bunnings voucher was won by Allegra U 6H. Congratulations to you all. A huge thank you to the businesses who showed enormous generosity in donating such fantastic prizes. All money raised will go directly towards sending the choir to perform at the Sydney Opera House in September.

Election Day Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser The Senior Choir would also like to thank all the parent and teacher volunteers, as well as the students who helped make the Election Day BBQ such a success. A massive thank you to our local businesses who generously supported our fundraiser - Trevor Mead Quality Meats, Byron Bay Hot Bread Kitchen and Woolworths. The money raised will go to the Senior Choir for their exciting adventure to Sydney to sing at the Sydney Opera House.

Sponsor a Song Another fundraising initiative is our “SPONSOR A SONG” program. We invite community members and businesses to support the choir by sponsoring a song that they will perform in Sydney at the Opera House. You can sponsor a song with a donation of $200 or more. If you know someone who may be interested, please contact the school.

Food Alert At Byron Bay Public School we have several students who have severe allergic reactions to foods, including several different nuts and seafood. These reactions range from skin rashes to acute anaphylactic shock requiring an Epipen. Please do not send any nut products or food containing nuts to school. We also ask that if your child is allergic to or has an intolerance towards certain foods, that you speak to your child about not sharing any food with other students. Students identified with having anaphylactic reactions, food allergies or intolerances are provided with an individualised Heath Care Plan. Parents are asked to ensure their child’s health care plans are updated at the school office.

Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Alert This is the time of year that we receive reports of confirmed cases of pertussis (whooping cough) out there in the community. Please keep your eye out for the symptoms and take immediate action should you suspect a case of whooping cough in your family.

Pertussis starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and is worse at night. The infection may also occur in fully-vaccinated children. Pertussis caught at school can spread to any other members at home. Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Pertussis can be especially dangerous for babies.

What should people sick with pertussis do? Pertussis is readily spread from an infected person to others by coughing and sneezing. If left untreated, it can be spread for up to three (3) weeks after the start of the infected person’s cough.

Do not attend work, school or a childcare facility if you or any household members:

Have a cough as described above. Please see your doctor.

Are being tested for Pertussis by your doctor and waiting for test results.

Are being treated with antibiotics for whooping cough for at least five (5) days after starting the medicine Keep coughing children away from babies. Pertussis vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades. If your school-aged child has younger siblings, it’s a good idea to check that they are up to date with their vaccines. For further advice, please call the Public Health Unit 1300 066 055 or NSW Health website. http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Factsheets/pertussis.pdf http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx

Thank You to Dr Moss We would like to thank Dr Moss at Cape Byron Medical Centre for donating his time to support staff wellbeing. Your ongoing support of the school is very much appreciated.

Great, Supportive P&C Thank you to our amazing P&C for continuing to provide quality resources that enhance teaching and learning and student participation in state events. They have financed the purchase of a state of the art com box that will replace one of our Interactive smartboards. They are also providing $50 sponsorship for all 36 choir students who have been selected to perform at the Opera House.

Until next time, Mrs Linda Trigg Principal

Odd Sock Fun Run Wrap Up The Student Representative Council (SRC), would like to thank the school community for their generous donations to our fundraiser. With your help we were able to raise $12,636.80. This money will go towards school beautification, including landscaping and painting projects around the school. Congratulations in particular to KC, 1H, 3W & 5I for being the classes in their stages who raised the most money. Students in these classes and all SRC representatives are invited to a pizza lunch on Thursday 30 May. SRC students and students from the winning classes who did not make donations are invited to donate $10 to join in on the pizza lunch. Students will be provided with plenty of lunch on this day and will not need to bring their own lunch, but may still wish to pack their munch and crunch. Thank you again and congratulations to all.

Girls and Boys Soccer On Monday our boys and girls soccer teams competed in the 2nd round of the PSSA Knock Out . Both teams were playing against Bangalow Public School at the Byron Bay Rec Fields. Our boys’ team turned out to be a close game, however we came out on top with Byron winning 3-1.

Our girls’ team also finished with a win against Bangalow. After forcing the game into extra time Byron scored with a few minutes remaining. It was the final few minutes when Byron scored. In the end it was all just a fun day spending some time playing soccer. Written by Elliott, Josh and Jasmin

Byron Bay Public School Works notification May 2019

Notification of planned works at Byron Bay Public School in May 2019

Work is underway at Byron Bay Public School to deliver 10 permanent new teaching spaces in a two-storey building, creating a total of 28 teaching spaces to accommodate 650 students. This update follows earlier advice distributed in April regarding the removal of the naturally occurring radioactive material in accordance with the Development Application approved by Council and the remediation action plan for the works. The first stage of removal took place between 6 and 10 March out-of-school-hours and within the DA approved hours. The second stage of planned removal works was expected to be completed during the school holidays between 13 and 18 April and again on Saturday 4 May. Due to poor weather, the second stage of removal was unable to be completed in its entirety. The incomplete works will now take place on the following days within approved DA times, weather and site conditions permitting:

Saturday 25 May, 8am – 1pm Monday 27 May (before and after school hours) Tuesday 28 May (before and after school hours) Saturday 1 June, 8am – 1pm

The material being removed does not meet the definition of a radioactive substance under the Radiation Control Act 1990 (NSW). A suitable qualified environmental specialist has been engaged to oversee all work associated with the removal including verification in accordance with NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) guidelines. The health, safety and well-being of students, staff and our neighbours is of highest priority, and all necessary measures have been and will continue to be carried out to ensure that the material is removed safely. As per previous communication, the playground area will remain unavailable for use for the remainder of Term 2. For information relating to safety standards, legislation and compliance visit the NSW EPA at epa.nsw.gov.au.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cause of the radioactive soil identified at Byron Bay Public School?

The soil contains small quantities of low level naturally occurring radioactive material and stems from earlier mineral sand mining activities in the area between years 1935 - 1972.

Material of this nature does not meet the definition of a radioactive substance under NSW legislation and is not regulated by the EPA under the Radiation Control Act 1990.

How is the material being managed while on-site?

This type of material is heavy and is not easily air borne, nonetheless, it has been covered deeming the area safe in its current position and posing no harm to workers nor the school community. The barrier around the affected area exceeds the regulatory standard.

What street will the trucks be entering and exiting the school from?

Trucks will be entering and exiting the site from the secure construction entry which is located on Tennyson Street.

What type of cover and security do the trucks have that will remove the material from the school?

The material placed in the trucks will be covered to meet the NSW Transport guidelines and each truck holds a Queensland Department of Environment and Science permit.

The trucks will be travelling to a licensed waste facility.

How will traffic be managed during this period?

An approved Traffic Management Plan is in place to manage the entry and exit points for the construction site. To minimise disruption the trucks will not exit Byron Bay through the town centre.

Thursday 16th May 2019 – Madman Entertainment and Palace Cinemas have partnered to announce that school-aged students will be able to see the new film 2040 without charge on opening weekend at Palace Cinema locations around the country*.

Directed by and starring Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film), 2040 is a positive and empowering journey to explore what the future could look like by the year 2040 if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream.

The intitiative coincides with the global advent of student-led climate change action and the fact that the film has resonated strongly with youth audiences at national Q&A preview screenings hosted by Gameau and other experts.

Gameau reflects on the positive reaction to 2040 from the student population: “We made this film to show a hopeful view of the future, and nobody can impact that more than the youth of today. We are getting passionate responses and great insights from students after early preview screenings, so we are thrilled to be working with Palace to make sure as many young people as possible can see the film and be inspired to join the regeneration.”

Palace Cinemas’, CEO, Benjamin Zeccola, indicated that the alignment felt right: “From solar panels to recycling programs, Palace Cinemas have long been committed to incorporating sustainable practises and we are thrilled to be able to support the next-generation of leaders and cinema-goers in making a positive change”.
