National Reconciliation Week National Reconciliation Week was initiated in 1996 by Reconciliation Australia to celebrate indigenous history and culture in Australia and foster reconciliation discussion and activities. This years theme, Grounded in truth, we can walk together in courage, provides us with the opportunity to further explore our shared history. National Reconciliation Week enables us to learn more about our Australian story. The theme aims to highlight aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and achievements and to prompt Australians to ask themselves, What are some of the things I dont know about our shared history? Here at Byron Bay Public School, we believe in being respectful, responsible and fair to everyone. We believe that our diversity makes us richer, and that together, we are Stronger and more able to build a unified future in which we understand, value and respect each other. A BIG thank you to Michelle Wright and our student leaders who hosted our special Reconciliation Week Assembly. It was very well received and provided an excellent opportunity for both staff and students to learn more about our shared history. Thank you to our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and community members who came to our special assembly. Year 5 Camp The weather was almost perfect for the Year 5 excursion to Lake Ainsworth Sport & Recreation Centre last week. We are fortunate to have such a well-organised and resourced camp facility so close to Byron Bay. Over the three days, our students experienced a range of activities, including sailing, archery, rock climbing, initiative games and orienteering. The instructors and teachers provided a safe and supportive environment in which the students were able to challenge themselves, develop their initiative skills and spend quality time bonding as a cohort. The students and staff returned to school on Friday afternoon with many newfound friendships and interesting stories to share with their families and friends. The teachers and instructors were impressed with the engagement in activities demonstrated by our Year 5 students. Thank you to Mrs Rhodes, Miss Stanton-Gillan, Mrs Irvine, Mr Bradley and Mr Hutchinson for taking the students on camp, ensuring they had an engaging program and for staying overnight to look after the students. Band News It was a pleasure to attend Bunyip Band last Thursday morning. For having only had three sessions together the 14 students are making excellent progress. Everyone was concentrating hard and making their best effort. Liberty and Ivy were wearing the new saxophone straps that the Band Committee have recently purchased. Cameron is off to the USA, for a well deserved break. Unfortunately, we were unable to find a replacement so from 28 May until 18 June there will be NO BAND and if Cameron is your child's tutor there will be no lessons during this period.

STEM Creativity Students in Year 2 have been working with Mrs Whitney as part of our STEM Program. STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The STEM lessons have been integrated into their current units of work where the students are individually designing robotics centred activities. Lily I from 2T demonstrated her fantastic ‘Life Time Track’ to me, which was completed with very precise coding and highly skilful use of one of our Ozobot mini robots. We are very proud of the great work being done in this area. Watch this space for more exciting STEM adventures.

Light House Class at BBHS – Information Session Mrs Janine Marcus, Principal of Byron Bay High School will be visiting us and providing additional information about the high school’s 2020 Lighthouse Class on Monday 3 June at 5.30pm in the library. The talk is for parents of interested students.

Staff News Jane Healy will be filling the LAST teacher role this term, providing additional in class support to students in need. Welcome back Jane. We wish Mrs Dawes all the best with the upcoming birth of her 3rd child and welcome Miss Rachel Buntz onto 3D.

Hall Roof Our school hall is being reroofed and will be out of action from today for three or four weeks. Assets Management were unable to have this job completed during the school holidays, as requested by the school. Hopefully the weather is kind to us, allowing a speedy completion of the job. Monday’s weekly assembly could prove to be problematic during this time if we receive significant rain. Until next time, Mrs Linda Trigg Principal

Bridging Challenge The winners of 3D’s bridge challenge. The students were asked to design a bridge that could stretch a 30cm ravine and hold the weight of a 350g ‘penny car’ crossing. These happy winners successfully completed the challenge to beat their competition, after 3 rounds and time to adjust their design. Congratulations!! Year 5 Lake Ainsworth Camp Year 5 went on camp on Wednesday morning. There were a lot of bags everywhere! We went to Lake Ainsworth, where they provided lots of fun activities. The activities were sailing, rock climbing, archery, stand up paddle boarding, orienteering and initiative games. The instructors were all very nice and helped us to improve our skills. We were given many opportunities to develop our responsibility by washing up, hanging up our own clothes and serving meals. We also did interactive night activities including a county fair and games against the teachers. We enjoyed watching a movie and hearing bedtime stories! We all enjoyed lots of time with our friends and mixing with new people. We returned on Friday afternoon, safe and sound but very tired! All up camp was really fun and everyone would love to go there again. Thank you to our amazing teachers Mrs Rhodes, Mrs Irvine, Mr Bradley, Miss Stanton-Gillan and Mr Hutchinson for giving us a great time away. Written by 5S

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) In our Week 3 newsletter, information on the NCCD was provided for all parents and carers. Byron Bay Public School is part of the NCCD

as are all schools across Australia. If your child is provided with extra support to access the curriculum or any part of school life eg sport activities due to asthma or other medical conditions, you may receive a letter home to further explain the NCCD process. All information provided to the NCCD is confidential and individual students are not identified. If you receive a letter in the coming weeks and have any

questions, please contact your child’s teacher or Ms Lennon (Deputy Principal) through the school office.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Our new PBL focus for this fortnight is ‘Being respectful in

classrooms’. Students from kindergarten to year 6 are provided with explicit lessons on the focus for the fortnight. A whole school time is timetabled in each week after assembly on a Monday afternoon for

PBL lessons to occur. Please have a chat with your child about the focus for each fortnight. Our green and yellow lighthouse tickets are given out to those students displaying our key values, especially the

current focus. Congratulations to Kindergarten who have had the most green tickets 4 weeks in a row.

As part of our PBL, we are hosting a Brainstorm production here at school on Tuesday 2 July. The cost of this performance is included in

your child’s Voluntary Contributions for 2019. If you have not yet paid your child’s Voluntary Contribution, you will need to pay $5.00 per child for them to attend this production.

The Human Race, a live educational theatre program, helps bolster

student resilience against the impacts of bullying both online and offline. Students will be provided with practical advice and strategies in a safe and supportive environment. The program reinforces the

importance of tolerance, kindness, respect and empathy towards others, helping improve overall personal wellbeing and self-empowerment. This year the theme for our performance is

“The Human Race”.

The Human Race is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and the program has been developed in consultation with teachers, psychologists, as well as real-life student experiences. The methodology of the program is safe, supportive and nonjudgmental and designed to provide students with positive and useful

tools that they can use in their everyday lives. More than 350,000 Australian students have already benefited from Brainstorm Productions multi award-winning educational theatre programs over the past twelve months. Their programs cater to the specific wellbeing needs of students, helping to create a

healthy and harmonious school environment. If you would like to know more about Brainstorm Productions, visit their website at www.brainstormproductions.edu.au

Sport News Our Junior Boys Relay team performed amazingly well at the State Swimming Championships at the end of last term. They dropped 10secs and just missed out on the final coming 13th!! (Out of 40!!)

Safe on Social Media On Tuesday 18 June, Kirra Pendergast from Safe on Social Media will be visiting our school, teaching our students, staff and parents about how to be safe on social media. Students will attend sessions

with Kirra throughout the day. The feedback we received from students after Kirra’s visit last year was extremely positive and

really started to open their eyes up about the importance of responsible and legal use of social media and the internet. This year, the school is offering a one hour session in the school library

for parents from 5.00-6.00pm.
