So Much to be Proud ofby Gary Davidson, Commodore

happy thanksgiving! Wow, it's hard to believe this year fl ew by so quickly.

We recently held our awards banquet, the choc Regatta had another successful year, we crowned new club champs, toasted at a Winemaker's Dinner, and held our october Flag members’ meeting. Summer might be over, but it seems this club is always busy!

over the last few weeks, I've had the opportunity to visit quite a few yacht clubs, from San Diego to San Francisco. I've met members, offi cers, managers and staff at these clubs, toured their facilities, and heard about their successes and their challenges. For the most part, they're all struggling to attract and keep good members, build volunteers, grow their youth programs, and stay relevant in an age when people have so many options for spending their available time and income. Many are seeing a decline in boating activities, and are working hard to build other programs to keep members engaged. Many have aging facilities, and are in the planning process to improve or replace them. but perhaps the most important thing I learned from these visits is that balboa yacht club remains head and shoulders above the rest, in terms of the outstanding value we offer, our exceptional location and facilities, our tremendously dedicated staff and leadership, and our keen focus on constantly improving what we do.

While it would be great to sit back and rest on our laurels, your board always has many initiatives and improvements in the works. those of you who attended the october Flag meeting (thank you very much for enduring the heat!) heard

about some of these plans. We began the meeting by unveiling a new Membership Development committee, headed up by Director Brett Hemphill. this committee will work closely in conjunction with our Membership committee to creatively and actively fi nd new ways to attract, engage, and retain members. the focus is on new, out-of-the-box ideas, and I'm excited at some of the concepts already being fl oated.

Rob Tyler also showcased the plans for the club's upcoming remodels, beginning with the remodel of the main restrooms coming in January, and followed by a major upgrade of the lower level which includes seismic strengthening, a large family lounge area, downstairs bar and grill, consolidated sailing offi ces, seamanship center, new locker room, storage, and elevator installation. these improvements are designed to upgrade our facility to attract, engage, and retain members, as well as to allow for aDa improvements.

lastly, the membership approved a bylaw amendment, which allows for a Flag certifi cate to be jointly-owned by a married couple. We all know that fully engaging the entire family can lead to lifelong members, which helps to create the family-friendly atmosphere that we all appreciate at byc. created by Director Paul Loubet and Steve Newton with their committees, the couple Flag membership was designed to give spouses a greater sense of belonging to the club, help attract new couples who wish to be involved, and allow for spouses to more readily participate in club governance. With the amendment now approved, the board is refi ning membership materials

and developing an approval process for those existing married members who wish to convert to couple Flag. the amendment, materia ls, and conversion process will go into effect March 1, 2016.

If you haven't noticed, membership and engagement are a common theme of this article. building our membership remains our club's top priority. every initiative and improvement we have planned is designed to help us attract, engage, and retain great boating members. obviously, the best members come from friends of existing members, so please make it your goal to bring in at least one new member in the coming year.

as you read this, there will only be a handful of days left in my term as your commodore. and you might imagine, it's bittersweet. our bridge, board, staff, and committees are really working well together. although it's been a terrifi c year and we've accomplished a lot, it seems like there's so much more work to do. as much as I've enjoyed my watch and would like to stick around, it's time to let the next watch take us to even better places. With V/C Doug West at the helm, I'm extremely confi dent in our club's future. thanks to everyone for a fantastic year at byc!

2015 was a very productive year for the balboa yacht club Membership committee and September and october was no exceptions. If you recognize these new members in the clubhouse, clink a glass with them and give them a huge balboa yacht club welcome!

Knowing how important it is for us to constantly be bringing in new Members, please fi nd that special someone who you think might be a good fi t. bring them to the clubhouse and get a great introduction to all that balboa yacht club has to offer.

We will remember the 2015 season

as the year with no pier, paper plates, plastic utensils, and brown grass. We will also remember 2015 as the season of spectacular weather,

no June Gloom, warm water (seventy-seven degrees recorded on labor Day), and unprecedented fishing success. club members who have been going to catalina for over fifty years have confirmed there has never been such a beautiful summer.

Despite not having a pier for most of the season, members took advantage of this wonderful weather in great numbers. Starting in March, our work parties were well attended with over forty volunteers participating week one. We look forward to the same participation in March 2016.

opening day was a great success with Karen and PJ Jacquelin, as chairs. their team of volunteers faced the challenge of setting up a fabulous weekend without the benefit of the pier. the Doctor Seuss theme was wonderful and will be remembered for a long time.

July 4 has become a great tradition with families. children and grandchildren filled

the cove. at avalon, the fireworks barge was an unexpected surprise. this year it was moved further out from the shore and we were able to enjoy the fireworks from Whites.

the annual Dinghy Parade kicked off a great weekend with many of the participants in costume, led by Ed and Karen Kliem.

With the help of Dorris and Don Stroughton organizing and our own Commodore Gary Davidson and V/C Doug West working the grill, the picnic lunch was delicious and fun.

the catalina classic produced an unprecedented catch. our own master angler, Bob Hoose was quoted saying, “this was the best fishing in our lifetime.” Bacco, our tournament winner, had a remarkable day anchored in eighty feet of water directly off Whites. they took in fifteen yellowtail and the limit on calico bass. the season has not ended, with several anglers still searching for wahoo in November. Wow!

long Point was a cooperative effort with Newport harbor yacht club. With the pier out of service, hosting 250 sailors at Whites became an impossible challenge. our neighbor, Newport harbor offered to host the event and did a wonderful job. a special thanks to Dave Willke with becky lenhart, and all of the volunteers who stepped up to put on a great weekend.

the season could not come to an end without the annual Stag cruise. Chris Bretschger and his volunteers have done a terrific job in promoting this weekend.

over 120 gentlemen attended and enjoyed fine food, good music, and comradery. Members, new and old, as well as their guests enjoyed Whites. a smile tends to appear when they recall the great time at byc Stag Weekend.

In September, we were presented with another challenge of how to transport the new flag pole over to Whites. at forty-four feet and over 400 pounds, it was not going to be an easy task. Fortunately, the timing coincided with the Stag cruise and there were plenty of able bodied volunteers who left their pre-cruise breakfast and came down to the dock to help lift the pole on to the William B. upon arriving at Whites three hours later, our Stag cruise volunteers were able to unload the pole from the tug and load it on Station Manager Mike’s truck. there are many people to thank including the fifteen members at byc and the twenty members at Whites who assisted in the loading and unloading of the flag pole.

Many thanks go out to Gary hill, Vice commodore of Nhyc, and the William B. When Gary heard about the challenge, he immediately volunteered the use of his trusted tug boat. Gary always points out the friendship between our two clubs, which was evident in situations such as this.

In closing, thank you to everybody for a great summer and all of the support. See you all around the club!

Just a reminder, the float at the end of our pier was removed for the winter on November 5.

this has been a fantastic year

on the water! the anglers, led by Bob Hoose, had what he called “the best fishing in thirty years.” they had a very successful season with their In

the bay tournament, catalina classic, and Interclub challenge. the cruise Fleet, steered by Jim and Sally McClure, finished with the annual potluck after having cruised this year to San Diego, Dana Point, long beach, and two harbors. the sailors have been actively racing dinghies and keelboats to local and distant destinations throughout the year.

the highlights of the big boat racing were cabo Race (Between the Sheets, Bolt, Horizon), transpac Race (Between the Sheets, Bolt, Horizon, Varuna), StFyc big boat series (Varuna), long Point Weekend (winner - It’s OK), Sunkist (winners – Doubletime PhRF b, Radical Departure PhRF D, Campaign II PhRF

e). We hosted races such as 66 Series, byc team Race Invitationals, Rose cup, and of course the Governor’s cup. the small boat sailors raced Sunkist, Flight of the lasers (winner – Christian Rosene), Super Sabot Saturdays (winner – F/C Molly Lynch), harry Wood Regatta, ullman b Regatta, Valentine’s Day Regatta, Macho Men’s Regatta, and little old ladies and Gents Regatta. and certainly everyone had a great time this past summer racing in the twilights and beercans. thanks to Pinky Greene and Beverly Roberts for getting us on the water every week (May-September)! In october, we raced our club championships, and the 2015 champions are Greg Newman and Alex Steele, Masters are S/C Alan Andrews and F/c Molly lynch, and Family winners are Amy and Chuck Simmons. the year finished with the annual awards Dinner “celebrate our tropical year” and honored our members, anglers, cruisers, racers, and race managers on November 14! congratulations to all!

the winter season has begun with the

choc/Sunkist Series (first weekend of November - February), Super Sabot Saturdays (third Saturday of the month, october - april) and Midwinters (coming up in February). I encourage everyone to come out to celebrate the holidays and race the Portsmouth Folly on December 12. this is the most fun racing (all sailboats under 22’), so decorate your boat and dress in holiday gear!

hope to see you all on your boats and enjoying the various activities this winter!

the good old days are now! the

2015 season will go on record as being the best offshore fishing season ever witnessed in Southern california. this warm water cycle started in June, with

a historical run of bluefin tuna – with schools of 100-200 pound fish feeding as close as three miles off Dana Point! by July, massive schools of yellowfin tuna and dorado moved into the local banks. at one point in early august, the local tuna fishing was so good, just two to five miles off our coast, that the entire long range fleet on five to eight day trips were fishing right in our backyard! that same week, balboa yacht club anglers enjoyed outstanding fishing in our Inter club challenge and beat Newport harbor yacht club again for the fourth year in a row.

by September, large schools of striped marlin invaded the west end of catalina, and byc boats took advantage of the bite of the century with double digit trips. one of my most memorable marlin fishing days was up off Santa cruz Island catching next to Andreya and Vintage, with all of us pulling on fish. Some of the legendary Newport captains mentioned they had never seen

marlin fishing this good in these waters. Next came the skipjack tuna – a favorite

food of the larger blue marlin and wahoo. the blue marlin bite in late September and early october surpassed all records of any angling club on the coast. the balboa angling club in Newport harbor weighed a 618, 502, 429, and 420 pound blue marlin in a single week! they also weighed a rare 349 pound black marlin – last one weighed locally by loren Grey in 1940! all these billfish were caught inside the catalina channel.

the exotics showed up in record numbers too, and Matt Wentz aboard It Never Ends was the first member to weigh a wahoo for the angler Fleet. Derek New also had an epic day in early october, and brought in a pair of these rare hawaiian fish. on october 29, byc angler Tim Baker aboard his boat On The Other Line caught a fifty pound wahoo near the 267 on a trolled X Rap. the wahoo fishing is as good as it gets this season. More wahoo are being caught this season than in the last 100 years combined!

enjoy it while you can! If you would like to be added to our byc angler eblast, send me an email at [email protected].

Tight race down to the leeward mark

the balboa yacht club club championships took place on Sunday,

october 18. the event was sailed in harbor 20s. everyone was responsible for fi nding their own boat for the day, and we were happy to see all three byc harbor 20s put to good use to get up to the eleven boats on the water that day. the day started out a little light, but

with the excellent Race Management of PRo Tom Dessell and the Race committee a team of Pinky Greene and Jill Golden, we were able to get in seven competitive races. big thanks to them and also to Gator Cook and photographer/mark set man Tom Walker for moving those marks around when needed.

the competition was fi erce and fun. We had teams of husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, big time adult sailors with some big time junior sailors, brothers, cousins, and good friends. We had commodores, Rear commodores, Staff commodores, and a Fleet captain.

at the end of the day, the team of Greg Newman and Alex Steele ended up as the winners and the 2015 byc club champions. Chuck and Amy Simmons took the award for top Family and F/C Molly Lynch and S/C Alan Andrews won for top Masters team.

Plans continue to come together for what is

sure to be an amazing event next summer. July 15 through 23, 2016 has been designated “cup Week” at balboa yacht club. under the

continued, diligent guidance of Regatta chair Susan Kenney, the racing is sure to be exciting in the new Gc22 boats. S/C Tom Purcell and I (Paul Blank) are co-chairing the 50th celebration related events around the actual regatta and we have some serious fun planned.

among many changes anticipated in 2016 is a slight increase in the age limit for participants. as a result, we are likely to see a handful of past winners applying to be part of the action.

Speaking of past winners, plans are in the

works for an alumni regatta the weekend before the actual competition. Past and current participants will take to the water in an exhibition style event. this should be an excellent on-the-water kick-off to “cup Week.”

on Saturday, July 16, Gary Jobson’s documentary of fifty years of the Governor's cup will premiere at the lido theatre amid a suitable gala for all ticket holders. Much has gone into the making of this hour long retrospective. there is a two minute trailer to whet the appetite on the byc website.

the week will include traditional favorite activities, such as the Welcome Dinner on Monday night and the gala Prize Giving ceremony Saturday afternoon. Volunteers who have supported the regatta throughout the years will be recognized at the Member’s Reception and Press conference on Friday night.

It is expected that both the america’s cup and the congressional cup (on which the Governor’s cup was based) will make appearances during “cup Week.” this will be the first time all three cups will be together.

an event of this magnitude involves considerable expense. Fortunately, a number of sponsors have stepped forward to support the regatta and celebration financially. these sponsors will enjoy visibility in a number of venues and in a number of formats leading up to and during “cup Week.” corporate and individual (tax deductible!) sponsorship opportunities are still available.

there are plenty of ways to get involved and be part of this historic event: Volunteer to serve on one of the special event committees; volunteer to serve on the regatta committees; Sponsor a team or sponsor the event; contribute to the new Gc22 boat campaign.

contact Paul Blank ([email protected]), Susan Kenney ([email protected]), or S/C Tom Purcell ([email protected]) to be part of this historic event.

50th annual goveRnoR’s Cup update

2016 Governor’s cup to be Spectacular

by Paul Blank, Governor’s Cup 50th Anniversary Celebration Co-Chair

the balboa yacht club Juniors have

had a busy fall, which is finally starting to wind down. our sailors have competed all over the coast in long beach, Marina del Rey, San Diego, Monterey, and of

course, Newport harbor! We have only two events remaining in the 2015 season: the holiday cup at lido Isle yacht club and the Portsmouth Folly at byc. We expect both events to have large numbers of byc Junior Sailors. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Patrick Meegan, who has been the head of the Junior activities committee for the past year, along with the other chairs of the Jac! It has been a tremendous year and we thank you for all your support.

this winter we have a few competitors heading all the way to the orange bowl at the coral Reef yacht club in Florida! David Wood, with crew catherine Reynolds, will be competing in the 420 class and Dylan Wood will be switching gears to the opti to compete. this year the event runs from December 26 to December 30, so be sure to check out the web for live results and cheer on our people!

byc sailors compete all over the country at a national level. all of this success would not be possible without your help, and the byc Maritime Sciences and Seamanship Foundation. Following its mission of promoting the development of yachting and seamanship, the Foundation has used several thousand dollars in grants supporting our sailors and local sailing teams in 2015. you can learn more about

the Foundation at www.bycmssf.org. We’d like to encourage all of you to join us at this coming byc crab Feed in February 2016! this is one of the best events of the year at byc, and a great way to support the club’s youth sailing program. Nowhere else in town can you get all the crab you can eat served to you by enthusiastic young sailors, a silent and live auction, and beverages brought to you by surly commodores and directors! ticket prices are kept low - just to cover the cost of the meal, to encourage you to donate! the food is great, the price is right, the cause is worthwhile, and the camaraderie at the tables is top notch.

If you can’t attend the crab Feed, please consider making a donation to the Foundation. the club’s future leaders are our junior sailors of today. encouraging their passions, helping them to succeed, and supporting their interaction with the sea will help to ensure that byc continues to be a great place to spend time boating with friends and family well into the future. the byc Juniors have even bigger plans for 2016 and beyond! thanks once again for your ongoing support. We wish you and your family good cheer for the holidays and a great new year!

the fall Super Sabot Saturday

Series began on Saturday, october 17, with strong winds in a busy harbor. twelve racers in the a class were led by F/C Molly

Lynch, with two firsts. Molly also stopped to help Susan Jennings, Newport harbor yacht club, who capsized in the second race, but was back in her boat for the third. Susan found warm water and lots of help from becky lenhart and Greg Newman.

We were pleased that Paul Williams raced in b class, as well. We hope for

more novice Sabot sailors to race with him. Super Sabots are held on the third Saturday each month, from october through april. thanks to Pinky Greene, our PRo and her support team. In addition, the Sunkist Series began on November 7, and continues on the first Saturday, through February.

on Saturday, September 12, the 42nd annual sailing of the little old ladies and Gents Regatta was hosted by balboa yacht club. the racers were divided into four classes - ladies a and b, Mens, and Mixed c (both men and women). Perpetual trophies were presented for the day. the list of winners of the bank of Newport Perpetual, which has been awarded since 1974, includes many names that are familiar to Newport sailors, including

byc sailors. this year, it went to Beverly Roberts. the Perpetual for low score in ladies a was awarded to betty becker of San Diego yacht club.

twenty-eight racers struggled with hot, light winds and a strong tide, especially in the first race. Winds improved later in the afternoon. We enjoyed a good turnout despite the heat with eight from Mission bay yacht club, four from San Diego yacht club, three from Nhyc, and eleven byc members. Representing Women’s Sailing association - orange county, was lynn acosta. becky lenhart organized behind the scenes, while Pinky Greene and her R/c support team Venetia Jackman, Audrey Simenz, and Kelly arce ran the races. they were aided by Tom and Katie Dessel on mark set. Betty Andrews took care of registration. We were honored to have Commodore Gary Davidson present the trophies while his wife, Nancy Davidson, took photos. Tom Walker took beautiful photos on the water. complete results are available at balboayachtclub.com.

yacht club each fall. a total of fifteen boats were divided into three classes, starting in reverse order. the conditions were light winds, smooth seas, and beautiful skies.

byc boat entries included, It’s OK of

the tres Gordos, llc (Lew Beery, Andy Rose, S/C Tom Purcell), Horizon with owner John Shulze and Mama Tried with Mark Peters and Alex Steele aboard.

the boats struggled to get southwest toward the 14 Mile bank (the first mark on the course), before heading south to San Diego. the fleet experienced some stronger breeze for a few hours, but that would not last. as the wind died for the evening, boats began to drop out of the race. by morning, only three boats remained and continued on to the finish.

My granddaughter, haley, just

graduated from Stanford university, where she was an all-american sailor for two years, co-captain of the sailing team, and

an academic all-american.She recently returned from england

where she sailed in the ISaF team Racing World championships. the International Sailing Federation (ISaF) is the governing body for global sailing events (and this championship was rated equal to the olympics).

haley and her team returned as World champions after winning the event with eighteen teams competing.

here’s haley’s story:this past april, as I was preparing

to sail in my fi nal collegiate National championships, I received an email from three time college all-american/National champion, Michael Menninger, asking if I wanted to sail with him in the 2015 ISaF team Race World championship, representing the uSa in July. to say I was excited would not come close to expressing my emotions. I was being asked to join a team of sailing legends, consisting of Justin law, tyler Sinks, lucy Wallace, adrienne Kamilar, and Michael Menninger, who had won the united States team Race Nationals earlier in the year to qualify to represent america at this olympic level event…of course, I accepted!

In June, I graduated from Stanford university and left the states for a trip of a lifetime. I traveled for four weeks, visited europe with friends, and headed off to Rutland, england to race in the World championships. We had never practiced together as a team (nor had I ever sailed with Michael), so we were all looking forward to getting on the water.

the regatta was sailed in Firefl ies, which are not often sailed in the united States.

Getting your footwork right and building up muscle memory for sheet location is critical and takes time (something we did not have). Racing started with eighteen teams seeking to become World champions! the days were long and windy, but our goal was to make the top nine and get into the Gold round. We achieved this by winning thirty-one of our thirty-four races.

the Real team Racing World championship came down to thursday. the forecast for Friday was looking light and rainy, leading the Race committee to make the decision that the Gold round robin, semi-fi nal, and fi nal would all be sailed in one day, followed by the awards ceremony. In the Gold round robin, our team stayed focused and only lost one very close race to GbR1, the favorite and defending World champions from Great britain. this allowed us to advance to the semi-fi nals, which matched us up against GbR2 (Great britain’s current National champions). We ended the Gold round around 1:00 PM. and were sent to the shore to wait about three hours while the youth semi-fi nals and fi nals were sailed. those three hours were torturous.

When we were fi nally called out onto the water, we were jittery and excited. We raced GbR2 in the “best-of-fi ve” semi-fi nals and

beat them 3-0 to advance to the fi nals. as we waited for the fi nals to commence, we watched uSa3 race GbR1 in the other tight semi-fi nal battle. GbR1 led uSa3 2-0 and then uSa3 came back to win three races in a row, and advanced to race our team in the fi nals! We could not have asked for a better team to race in the fi nals, and having another uSa team in the championship was amazing. My assistant coach at Stanford, clinton hayes, was the leader of uSa3, and he had recommended me to Michael to crew for the World championship.

We quickly won the fi rst two races and had a commanding lead in the third and deciding race. We crossed the fi nish line and were high-fi ving, smiling, and cheering. It was a surreal moment, and when we got to shore, we received beer and champagne showers while holding the american fl ag. tons of photos and congratulations followed in a blur. tyler Sinks gave a great speech at the trophy ceremony, and the rest is history.

our tropical year was celebrated

on November 14th with our annual awards dinner. this is always a wonderful evening to congratulate our fellow boaters and

acknowledge their successes for the year! Many members received awards for Junior Sailing, The Talewind, anglers, cruise Fleet, Race Management, Sailors and Racers. I am sorry that I cannot mention everyone in this article, but please see the byc website for a list of all the award winners!

Some of the awardees included best Talewind article by Kerri Luttrell, for her writing about the Ida lewis regatta, and best photo to S/C Ray Lewis, with his photo of the new Whites pier. the cruise Fleet honored their chairs, Sally and Jim McClure, for their leadership, and Mel Redmond, for winning the new Predicted log Race. the top winner in the anglers was Matt Wentz, being best Male angler and leader of the Inter club challenge.

Many awards were given out to the racers some of the highlights were Dinghy Sailor

of the year to Porter Killian, ocean Racing Sailor to the Rosene Family on Radical Departure including three generations Dennis, Mark, Christian and Claire, and the long Point Perpetual to It’s OK and Lew Beery, Tom Purcell and Andy Rose.

one of the special awards was given for enthusiastic participation in several races for small and big boats, the leo V. collin Perpetual was awarded to Jessica Newman. the big boat Sailor of the year was a tie between John Shulze on Horizon and Chris Hemans with Varuna, both represented the club in many races. We had a new trophy for excellence in offshore Racing, which was won by S/C Craig and Carson Reynolds with Bolt.

all the numerous volunteers that support the fleet activities and make it happen with countless hours on the water and organizing events were also recognized. event of year was the uS youth Match Racing championship for the Rose cup organized by Rob Vandervort. and the Race Manager of the year went to Bob Strang for being PRo of 66 Series, long Point Race Week, and the byc team Race Invitational (running 71 races over 3 days).

the two top awards were presented by commodore Gary Davidson. the Pluck award to the member with the greatest persistence was awarded to Ross Pearlman. he has raced and cruised his boat for many years, this year racing cabo, sending his boat on transpac and cruising in catalina. this is a man who loves sailing and sharing his passion with others, including juniors. and finally the Sportsman of the year was presented to Brad Wheeler. brad became a member in 1984 and has sailed Sabots, lasers, Schock 35s, 505s and more. he has raced many big boat Series, cabo Races, and 7 transpac Races. he is also a two time Governor’s cup winner. and my favorite is his designing, building and racing his turbo-Sabot in Portsmouth Folly last December. he is a gifted sailor, fun competitor, and an outstanding representative of our club!

congratulations to all the winners!

okay! What can I say, other than

the fact that our most recent Winemaker’s Dinner was another huge success? okay, my arm’s been twisted. I’ll say more!

November 5 was the third event in a quarterly, and continuing, series of Winemaker’s Dinners, featuring the wines from west coast wineries. In accordance with my goal of featuring the wines of small wineries (10,000 cases or less of annual production), we had a fantastic lineup of wines from Melville Winery, located in the Santa Rita hills of central coast california.

Five outstanding wines from Melville, together with a couple “starters” for our hors d’oeuvres, were wonderfully paired through the culinary expertise of chef Joseph (he’s really great, isn’t he?), and presented by chad Melville. Some of you may recall that the Melvilles were balboa yacht club members many years ago, until the wine bug got them and they moved up north.

all of these wines were rated ninety-two points or higher, by arguably the world’s most respected wine critic, Robert Parker.

We started our fi rst course with a gateau of roasted red beets with “drunken” (not a sign of the state of things to come, by the way) goat cheese and fuya persimmon vinaigrette, which was paired with the Melville 2013 estate chardonnay, Santa Rita hills. this wine was rated ninety-three points by Robert Parker (aka: RP). Personally, it was one of the best california chardonnays I’ve ever had! the wine was pure, not over-oaked, and had excellent acidic balance.

the second course was a wonderful alaskan halibut with hen of the Woods mushrooms, black garlic, a real rarity, and yam puree. the spotlight on the wine turned to the 2012 estate chardonnay

Santa Rita hills, hanzell Selection, which chad graciously pulled from the Melville library. It rated ninety-two points by RP.

Next, we turned our attention to the main course, featuring two Melville wines – the 2013 estate Pinot Noir Santa Rita hills (ninety-two points by RP) and the 2013 estate Pinot Noir, Sandy’s block, a very limited production wine that garnered a whopping ninety-six points by Robert Parker. yes, the wines were great and so was the “marriage made in heaven,” when we paired them with chef Joseph’s Veal tenderloin Medallion, brussel sprouts, red pearl onions, salsify, and veal stock reduction. absolutely divine! Placing two great wines, side-by-side, made for an intellectual and thought provoking process, leading to some interesting debate. Mighty fi ne, folks!

and, then there was one more:our last course was a very nice selection

of cheeses consisting of Spanish Manchego (remember byc cruise Fleet, Mallorca in June is just around the corner), Roquefort and St. andre with crostini’s and dried apricot. We fi nished this course with the ninety-three point, 2013 estate Syrah Santa Rita hills, a more feminine Syrah that was perfect with the fi nal paring.

I’m sure that those of you who missed this event are really feeling sorry for yourselves. understandably so!

the good news, bad news, good news is as follows: We had another fabulous function, but we had to turn people away, again (all byc members). that being said, we’re planning our next Winemaker’s Dinner for the end of the fi rst quarter of 2016.

Remember, these dinners are sold out as soon as we hit thirty people (byc members only), in order to keep everything fi rst rate in both food preparation and wine presentation. Next time, don’t be late and don’t hesitate.

until next time, cheers! Keep eating and drinking fi ne wine from great producers!

they say a good article should

be like a woman’s skirt: long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest. Needless to say – this article will be brief (no pun intended).

I have determined through extensive research that there are two rules to a great party:

Rule #1: Make sure people show up. (thank you 2015)

Rule #2: Make sure they want to come back. (Shameless plug for 2016)

on that note, and with my limited word count, I’ll begin by thanking all those who attended the 2015 balboa yacht club Stag cruise this year – without you all, well, we’d have no party. I’ll also add an even bigger thank you to the byc staff whose hard work made the weekend that much more enjoyable for all who attended.

the weekend began as many a Newport beach weekend does; calm seas, clear skies, and a rum squall just over the horizon. the crowd grew in the bayview Room, rousing this Friday morning with the most important aspect of preparation: breakfast. Mother always said, breakfast is the most important of meals (gives you strength for the day) – Stag Weekend would be no exception. Preparation of mind, body, and liver were key.

as Friday moseyed and meandered through, boats began rolling into the cove prepping themselves for the cannon at 1700. and just like that, the symphony of Whites echoed through the cove, in a manner that would have made tchaikovsky slip a smile. the 2015 Stag Weekend had begun, music on shore, Mario behind the bar, and chef along with his team fi ring up the grills – all was good. and the rest? Well, the rest of the night was fun.

the dance with such weekends is always played to the same impatient rhythm. What begins as a surge of chaos is always reduced to the perfect still. Such was Saturday’s dawn. the cove was slow to rise in the morning, and as is the case many weekends, the raising of men could only be found when the food bell rang. once proper sustenance was received, the day carried on – competition, camaraderie, all which comes with a day at the island – then with speed to balance out the morning, evening quickly took its place.

Now, I’ve spent the last twenty minutes trying to recount what it was like to be in the midst of old friends sharing stories, belly laughs being heard from the other side of the cove, and hundreds of conversations mounting on top of each other – alas I am a simple man who uses simple words, and I lack the eloquence to adequately share such an experience that would fully embody the life of the evening, so I’ll sign off with a few simple words.

Veni, vidi, vici. and we’ll do it again.

a big turnout of t w e n t y - t w o

members of the balboa yacht club cruise Fleet participated in the final cruise of the 2015 season to two harbors Isthmus cove, catalina

Island, September 18-20, 2015.Participants included: Commodore

Gary Davidson and Nancy with Mel and Priscilla Redmond aboard Passage; V/C Doug West and Irene Ziebarth aboard Islander; cruise chairpersons Jim and Sally McClure aboard Tramonto; Bob and Arleen Stevens aboard Sharmel; Buz and Pat Lowe aboard Simply Grand; John and Jeanne Burzan aboard Kokomo; Tom and Pat Ellison aboard Double Eagle II; and Bud and Barbara McNair aboard Legacy. Nancy Mellon and son, David, aboard Yamphibian joined the group on Saturday.

the Friday evening “happy hour” was hosted by the ellisons aboard Double Eagle II, and their hospitality was greatly appreciated. yummy hors d’oeuvres made for supper for many of us, and the rest headed ashore for the full fare at the harbor Reef.

Saturday morning, the walkers assembled

on shore for a short hike to cat harbor. after the viewpoint destination was reached, the group returned to the General Store for an ice cream break.

later that afternoon, everyone gathered onshore to meet with the conservancy Naturalist for a journey by bus through the backcountry of catalina. our final destination was the airport in the Sky. It was also fun to have Mike Sullivan and his friend and fellow Gaucho, Greg, join the group for the bus trip and dinner.

the views of the coves and beaches on the backside of the island are spectacular. During the trip John Mack, chief conservation and education officer for the conservancy, pointed out geological formations that reveal significant periods in the evolution of the island. the trip went smoothly considering travel was on rough dirt roads.

upon arrival at the airport in the Sky, about half the group took a short hike to a soapstone quarry where the Gabrielino/tongva early inhabitants quarried for domestic use and trade. after returning from the hike, we were all treated to a delicious buffet dinner of beef tri-tip and chicken, served on their beautiful patio just as the sun was setting.

after dinner, John taught us more about the island before boarding the bus for the return trip to Isthmus cove. Most cruisers headed for home Sunday morning with ample sunshine and smooth seas.

Many thanks to Jen Poyer, the Special events Manager for the conservancy, who arranged the backcountry tour for us. Without her able assistance, the tour would not have been possible.

cruise Fleet update

by Jim and Sally McClure, Cruise Fleet Co-Chairs

Wow! can 2015 really be over,

with 2016 upon us? What a wonderful, eventful year it has been. the weather, for the most part,

made for smooth cruising (except for belmont Pier), and we were blessed with sunny skies and great fellowship. During the year, we had a total of nine events, spent eighteen days on the water, cruised over 395 miles, and had in excess of 113 participants. the potluck held on october 20 was a fun fi lled, sea story telling evening. over 250 pictures were shown throughout the night to highlight the year. after great food was enjoyed, the night was topped off by drawing for door prizes; some really nice and some “fun” ones. everyone stayed long after the event was over. It seemed like no one wanted the year of cruising to end.

We are looking forward to 2016, with some of the traditional destinations in the planning stages, along with some new ones. Stay tuned for the new schedule. June will fi nd about thirty balboa yacht club members and friends cruising in Majorca. Charlie and Claire Foss have a wonderful seven day trip all planned, and six boats are chartered. We will look forward to hearing lots of stories and seeing all the pictures.

hope you can participate in one or all of the events in 2016. even if you are “high and dry” (without a boat), there will be opportunities to join us at some of the local destinations. All BYC members are welcome!

the Kickoff Potluck is set for late January, so look for more information to follow. Don’t miss the great food and fun. See you there.

thank you for your support in contributing to the success of 2015.

asia, and this trip included some old and some new experiences. Sam narrowly missed this trip, also.

Stowaway Sam hit the big time with Rick Ingold and Dean Kiser on oceania’s Marina from Venice, around the boot heel of Italy, to Monte carlo. In the marina, they passed Marjorie Merriweather Post’s fabled sailing vessel, Sea Cloud, built for her by her husband, e.F. hutton in Kiel, Germany in 1931. It is said she never asked the price of a single item in outfi tting the ship from its marble bathtubs to the fi replaces. the lament from Rick, Dean, and Sam was, “those days are long over, too bad.” Indeed! on the way home they stopped at the annapolis boat Show where they ran into Michael Michel and Karen Rhyne. am I reporting on any new boats in the next issue? Stay tuned.

NON-BYC BULLETIN BOARDcalling all skiers, boarders, bobsledders, snowball fi ghters, snowman makers, or what-ever. Wouldn’t it be fun to get a group up to big bear for a day trip, or to Mammoth for a weekender? this is not a balboa yacht club sponsored event, but i would like to get a head count by november 30, of how many members would have an interest is this type of adventure. We could rent our own bus and make memories. please contact David Beek at (714) 504-3138.
