Once again it is my pleasant duty to record my gratitude to Professor R. Draguet, the Secretary General o f the Corpus Scrip- rortmi Christianorum Oriemaliunu for accepting the work here edited for publication and for his ncver-faiiing interest and encouragement.

Acknowledgements are due to the authorities o f the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, for permission to publish a Coptic manuscript in their keeping; to the authorities o f the British Muséum, the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and the Michigan University Library, Ann Arbor. for providing me with photographs o f Coptic manuscripts and for giving me permission to publish them. I must also acknowledge the fmancial hclp afforded me by the Research Fund o f the University o f Durham which enabled me to acquire these photographs and, in the course o f my researches, to visit the British M uséum and the Vatican Library. I owe a great debt o f gratitude to Professor Tito Orlandi who gave me ready access to the microfilm collection of Coptic manuscripts at the Istituto di Studi del Vicino Oriente o f the University o f Rome, and who freely shared the information amassed by him. My thanks are also due to my friend and colleague here in Durham, Dr. W .J. Tait, with whom I have had the opportunity to discuss some points of difficulty in the Coptic text and from whose leaming I have profited. Last but not least, I thank my wife who once again has helped me in many ways. Needless to say. only I am responsible for any shortcomings o f the work.

    The Manuscripts

The text o fthe Panegyric on Apollo, Archimandrite o f the Monastery of Isaac, here edited for the first time, is contained in a manuscript, M 579, belonging to the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, which is available in photographie reproduction in Bybliothecae Pierpont Morgan codices coptici photographiée expressi (Rome, 1922), vol. 37. The codex which comprises eight works is described by H. Hyvemat in A Check List o f Coptic Manuscripts in the Pierpont Morgan Library (New York. 1919), p. 13, No. XXXIII, as follows : “ A.D. 823. 136 leaves; 2 columns of about 32 lines. 380 x 290 mm.” The works are listed thus :1 Eusebius, “The Roman Historian". A The8’panêgyric on Apollo extends from folio I30v to folio 148r of the manuscript. i.e. plates 262-297 of the photographie ed.t.on, The Coptic pagination is far from regular. A short account o f the difïicultics must bc given. The pancgync begins on the verso o f the 4th folio of quirc 17. which consists o f six folios, and should bear the page number [ m h ], but is actually without pagination. It is followcd by m© under which traces of an earlier k© can bc seen. Thcrc follow \ - \ ï . Quirc 18. consisting of six folios, begins on \ r and ends on ma. Quire 19. consisting of eight folios, begins on Më. The pagination then proceeds rcgularly to nh, although more than once the n is so badly written that it resembles h . Then follows a page without Coptic pagination and the quire ends on n©. Quire 20 begins on 5 and the last two pages of the panegyric, [ 5 1 - ü ] , seem to be without Coptic pagination.

To the summary description of the manuscript by Hyvernat the following points may be added which are gleaned from studying fols. 130v-148r in a Xérographie copy of the photographie édition. The main body of the text is written in a roundcd uncial script in two columns of between 33 and 40 lincs. The heading of the work is written in a thinner and sloping script. It is surrounded by ornamentation and the text itself begins with a greatly enlarged and ornamented capital. There are also enlarged leucrs in the body of the text at the beginning of paragraphs many of which are further emphasized by ornamented paragraph marks in the margin. which, in tum . arc some- times elaborated into birds in the bottom margin. The only other ornaments are the Christogram. which appears four times in the upper margin. and two plail ornaments also in the upper margin.

41,0; BM Or. 3581B(39)n . They arc here edited in the three Appcn- dixes, and footnotes in the main text indicate the extern of the parallels. Paris I29 '\63 , runs parallel to M 579, fol. 140v, col. I, line 12-fol. I41r, col. I. line 5. Michigan 158/41 runs parallel to M 579, fol. 141 v, col. II, line 23-fol. 142v, col. I, line 32. BM Or. 3581 B(39) runs parallel to M 579, fol. 144r, col. II, line 18-fol. 144v, col. II, line 8. An exami- nation of photographs of the three fragments leads to the tentative conclusion that they may well have formed part of one and the same parchment codex. The evidencc is too scant to attempt a reconstruction of this codex except to say that two folios may be missing between the Paris and the Michigan manuscript, and possibly four folios between the Michigan and the British Muséum manuscripts. This is on the assumption that the text of the reconstructed codex runs completely parallel to that of M 579. The Paris manuscript consists of one parchment leaf and is paged m£-mÏh]. The Michigan manuscript consists of two conjugale parchment leaves of which the pagination can no longer be deciphered. The two leaves, it would appear, must have been the middle leaves of a quire. The British Muséum manuscript consists of one parchment leaf which was the first of quire e . The pagination is no longer visible, but Crum in the Catalogue gives it as 5Â-56. This, of course, is entirely possible given the vagaries of the pagination of Coptic scribes. But it should perhaps be noted that, if we assume that a quire consisted of 8 leaves (16 pages), the first folio of quire i should normally bear the page numbers 5e-5S. Assuming that the three manuscripts were originally part of the same codex, the following brief description of its palaeographic characteristics can now be given. Ail the parchment leaves are more or less damaged. Crum gives the size of the British Muséum leaf as I21/* x 10 in. The text is written in two columns of between 23 and 28 lines in an irregular, rather untidy, rounded uncial hand. Initial letters at the beginning of paragraphs are enlarged. It may be conjectured that this manuscript, like M 579, was written in the ninth century.

10 The text is hitherto uncdilcd.11 The text was published by W .E. C ru m in Catalogue o f the Coptic Manuscripts

in the British Muséum (London. 1905). No. 322. pp. 143 f.

  • XINTRODUCTION

    Authorship and Date

In the heading o f the panegyric the w ork is a ttr ib u ted explicitly to Stephen, Bishop o f Hnês, i.e. H eracleopolis M a g n a 12. W e are told that the panegyric was delivered before S tephen becam e b ishop and while he was still a m onk in the M onastery o f Isaac, o f which the subject o f the panegyric, ApoIIo, had also been a m onk . N o fu rther information about Stephen is given and no th ing is know n a b o u t him. As far as I am aware, only one o ther C op tic w ork is a t tr ib u ted to the same au thor, a panegyric on the m arty r St. Elijah *3. T here is no rcason to doub t that Stephen was the a u th o r o f the tw o w orks, and their com m on au thorsh ip is m ade yet m ore likely by sim ilarities o f style. G .P .G . Sobhy, the ed ito r o f the Panegyric on St. Elijah, com- ments on the wealth o f Greek loan-w ords used in tha t t e x t 14. Similarly, the num ber o f Greek loan-words in the Panegyric on A pollo is unusual- ly high and the range o f G reek words em ployed particu larly wide and diverse. Somc relatively rare words seem to have becom e corrup ted in the course o f transmission o f the text, as can be seen from the Index o f Greek Loan-W ords and from the footnotes to the text. Both works contain word-plays on names. In the Panegyric on St. Elijah, Elijah (2 H \ u c ) is likencd to the sun (fîXioç)15. A lthough the G reek word is not actually used, the passage canno t be fully understood without îts knowledge. In the Panegyric on A pollo , the nam e o f the hero ( * t t o a a u ) ) is explained as he w ho truly enjoyed (a .n o \a L y e ) G od according to the sym phony o f his n a m e 16, while the name Théodore ( e e o A c u p o c ) is preceded by a gloss on the nam e, gift ( a u ) p o n ) to (of) G o d 17. Finally, one o ther similarity m ay be men- tioned. In both texts there occurs the C optic idiom o y e T e iM iN C

which. to judge by the entry in C rum ’s D ictionary18, is u n u su a l19. Needlcss to say. none o f these similarities proves that both panegyrics wcre composed by the same au thor but, taken cumulatively and in conjunction with the explicit a ttribution in the respective headings of the two panegyrics, Stephen’s authorship may, I think, be accepted.

But further problems arise when an attem pt is made to décidé which is the original language in which the Panegyric on Apollo was composed, Greek or Coptic. As no objective test has as yet been devised to help students o f Coptic literature in deciding this for ever recurring notoriously difïïcult question, the evidence which might assist in settling it must at least be briefly discussed. In a recently published b o o k 20 the following général criterion has been suggested, “ If a writing is not intended to have any circulation o r interest out- side Egypt, it may well be composed in C optic: but if it is intended for a wider public it may be assumed to have been originally in Greek". If this criterion is applied to our work, the indications are that its original language is Coptic, for the biography o f Apollo, it may be assumed, would be o f little interest outside Egypt. Only if the doctrinal sections o f the work are considered its centrepiece and it is interpreted as a polemic against Chalcedon and in favour o f the Monophysite cause, could the opposite view be taken. But this is somewhat improbable, for it is Apollo, the m onk, who occupies the centre of the stage throughout. If, on the other hand, we now tum to the impression produced by the language o f the work, we are led to a différent conclusion. M ention has already been made o f the wealth and, perhaps more im portant, the range o f Greek loan-words used in the panegyric, and o f the word-plays on names the primary S itz im Leben o f which seems to be the Greek language rather than the Coptic. M ore subjectively, long and close study o f the work has left me with the impression that the au thor 's thought and language show strong Greek influence. How then are these opposing views to be reconciled? Is it possible to suggest that the au tho r was bilingual, that he was imbued with Greek language and Greek thought, but

that he composed the w ork for a C optic-speak ing audience in C optic? This hypothesis, although at first sight som ew hat artificial, is by no means unthinkable in the context o f a strongly bilingual Byzantine

Egypt. It remains to discuss the da te o f the w ork 's com position , and once

more we are up against insurm ountab le d iff icu ltés , for we d o not know the dates o f Stephen, B ishop o f H eracleopolis M agna. The events depicted in the panegyric took place in the reign o f Justin ian I (A.D. 527-565). If the report o f the m eeting o f A pollo an d Severus o f A ntioch21 contains reliable historical in fo rm ation , it p rovides us with an additional useful date. T he m eeting is said to have taken place shortly before the death o f Severus (A .D . 538). In any case, the narrative leads us into the sixth century. T he m anuscrip t from which the text is taken was written in A .D . 822-823. C learly, the w ork was composed at some time between these two dates. Strictly speaking, nothing m ore précisé can be said. But in view o f the am o u n t o f détail offered by the narrative abou t events in the sixth century , it m ay perhaps be conjectured tha t the w ork was com posed by A .D . 600 or thereabouts.

    Language

The language o f the Pierpont M organ m anuscrip t, M 579, fols. 130v-148r, which is the chief textual witness o f the Panegyric on Apollo, is Sahidic, exhibiting, however, som e Fayyum ic adm ixture. This is, no doubt, due to the fact tha t M 579, like the rest o f the Coptic Pierpont M organ m anuscripts, was written for the M onastery of the Archangel St. M ichael at H am ouli in the Fayyum . Previous éditions o f Coptic texts o f Pierpont M organ m anuscripts have dealt fully with this phenom enon22. Ail the same, a brief description of the forms that diverge from the Sahidic norm will be necessary, particularly as the Fayyumic com ponent o f the language o f o u r text is less pronounced than in some o ther Coptic m anuscripts from H a mouli. The m ost noticeable non-Sahidic feature o f o u r text is the duplication o f n , particularly before vowels. It is so com m on that

    there is no need to give examples. The plural article is occasionally ne-. whereSahidic would use n-, e.g. N e^icpoN (135r), NeM*pTy p o c (136v). There also occurs the plural article form nm-. It is not clear whethcr this is to be explained as a phonetic variation, o r as a dérivation from the Bohairic foirn n c n - 23. Some examples may be given- 2 NNMTïhy€ ( 131 r ), N N M M o y N e io o y e (136v), n n m ÿ y x i k o n (137v), NNi2 PNNMnicTOC (144v). T he following non-Sahidic forms of the possessive pronoun o c cu r : n cu q (131 v), n e - , and T e - (138r), t c - (144r). Occasionally the genitive is indicated by n t c - , where Sahidic would use n-, e.g. Tna.pAKA.Hcic N T enN O Y Te (134v). Sometimes the Perfect II is used to express the Temporalis, e.g. N T A qntüT erre*, y i q T M q ... (134v). The following consonantal changes may be men- tioned : q for b in Greek and Coptic words, e.g. qpa.qiON (ppapetov) (133r), e q i a j (139v), eBBpep (144r); p for \ in Greek words, e.g. XMA.pAK.iTHC ( ’A|iaXr|K£iTr|ç) (133r), K 0pa.cTH pi0N (KoXaaxripiov) (135r), c(>ipAN©pcünii. ((piXavGpcûJua) (137v). It should be noted that the use o f G reek adjectives does not invariably follow the rule that the masc. and fem. form s are used for persons and the neuter form for things. Finally, it is w orth mentioning that the supralinear stroke is relatively infrequently used in our text. This is so even if allowance is m ade for the fact that some o f these lines may no longer be visible, especially as this édition is based on Xérographie reproductions o f the photographie édition.

The language o f the three fragments edited in the Appendixes is Sahidic.

Apollo, unfortunately, cannot be identified any more precisely. People corne from far and wide to celebrate the founder o f the Monastery of Isaac in the presence o f the Lord Christ. tell o f the life of Apollo as an examplc for his hearers. His virtucs arc thosc o f his biblical predcccssors. Moses, David, Joshua, and Elijah, o f the prophets, apostles and m artyrs (sections I and 2). W hen Apollo had grown up, he entered the Pachom ian m onastery a t Pbow. In an asidc the au thor refers to the dégradation o f Pbow, no doubt, bccause it had becomc a stronghold o f the Chalcedonians. A pollo’s sacrificcs are compared to thosc o f A braham and found to be superior. The author spcculates on the symbolic significance o f the m onastic habit and tells o f the ascetic way o f life which Apollo is to follow (sections 3 and 4). His virtues are further extollcd and hc is likened to the angcls. His ascetic suflerings and his humility arc rew arded by the gifts o f the Holy Spirit (section 5). Examples o f his ascctic practiccs arc given and the visions o f angclic choirs and O.T. prophets are describcd (section 6). Stephen exhorts his hearers no t to d o u b t his words. Hc goes on to recount a vision o f Christ which A pollo was vouchsafed, while working in the harvest field and feeling faint as the resuit o f his harsh asceticism. This vision encourages him to em bark on yet more ascctic feats (section 7). A pollo 's ascetic sufîcrings are in no way inferior to the sufferings o f the martyrs. At this time, in the rcign of Justinian I, the impiety o f Chalcedon has erupted once more and has attacked the M onophysite "o rthodoxy" which has rulcd in the Coptic Church (section 8). The sinful Council o f Chalcedon is reviewed and the bishops o f Chalcedon are accused o f having put forward the doctrine o f an unlawful "qua te rn ity " instead o f the holy Trinity (section 9). Egypt and the Pachomian com m unity o f Pbow remained Monophysite then; now once m ore their “ o r thodoxy" is under attack. The events o f the sixth century are described, and Severus of Antioch and Theodosius o f Alexandria are mentioned. Abraham, the abbot o f Pbow, remained truc to the M onophysite faith and was expelled, and a nomince o f the em peror was appoin ted in his stead. O ther Monophysite m onks left at the same time, am ong them Apollo. After many wanderings he settled and founded his new monastery, the Monastery o f Isaac. Ils location is not nam ed, exccpt that it is said to be north o f Pbow, but it may be conjectured that it was not far from Heracleopolis M agna (section 10). Apollo. who is compared to the N.T. Apollos, encounters the hostility o f a Meletian community which hc overcomes, when building his new m onastery (section 11). Apollo is once more praised for his spiritual powers, particularly the gift o f healing, for his spiritual ministry and for his

setting so excellent an exam ple (section 12). The m oral exhortations o f A pollo are recalled, an d we are told tha t at this time he was ordained to the priesthood (section 13). A pollo builds a small church and delays its consécration until sum m oned to do so by an angcl of the Lord. T he church is then consecrated and com m union celebrated in it. A pollo recalls the m iracle which enables him to refuse com m union to those w ho are unw orthy to reçoive it. He also has visions o f St. Paul (section 14). A no ther miracle tha t illustrâtes A pollo’s ability to see things h idden from ord inary men is recounted (section 15). Apollo encoun ters the devil and argues with him. T he earth from under his feet m ultiplies loaves o f bread, a miracle greater than those perform ed by Elijah and Elisha. H e also heals a w om an with an issue o f blood. a miracle which recalls th a t perform ed by Jésus, and restores a barren w om an to fruitfulness (section 16). A pollo has foreknowledge o f events yet to take place and know s o f events th a t take place in far o fî lands. He meets Severus o f A ntioch. T he au th o r réassurés his hearers o f the v irtuous life o f A pollo by pointing to the fruits o f his life, his m onastic congrégation (section 17). M ention is m ade o f a m onastery and a nearby convent, bo th clearly foundations o f Apollo, and the ascetic way o f life which is followed there is extolled (section 18). Apollo falls ill, bu t even in his illness he is able to heal others by means o f his spittle. H is illness gets worse and on the point o f death he com forts and exhorts his grieving brethren (section 19). The water in which he washes, when poured back into the well, m akes the water o f this well the agent o f m any healing miracles. A pollo dies on the 20th o f Paône and becom es a citizen o f the heavenly Jerusalem. He is asked to intercede with C hrist on behalf o f his monastery. The panegyric ends with a prayer and a doxology (section 20).

This brief sum m ary o f the contents will give some idea o f the scope o f the work. It includes historical inform ation on the struggle between adherents o f Chalcedon and M onophysites in the reign o f Justinian I as well as on the survival o f the M eletians in the same period. It depicts m onastic ideals and gives a good idea o f popular piety in the Egyptian Church. Référencés to both the Old and the New T estam ent pervade the work. There are num erous quotations and allusions and typological interprétations o f biblical passages. In addition, there are some patristic quotations, only some o f which I have been able to identify. Footno tes to the Coptic text and the English translation d raw attention to this material.
