The 1948 Election America blamed Truman for the inflations and labor unrest in the US.

The Democratic party, however, still nominated him for the 1948 election.

Southern “Dixiecrats” protested his nomination and separated from the Democratic Party to form the States’ Rights Democratic Party.

They nominated their own candidate - Gov. J. Strom Thurmond.

The former VP, Henry A. Wallace, also protested and led his supporters to a new more liberal Progressive Party where he ran for

President.

The Republican candidate Gov. Thomas E. Dewey appeared to have a lead in the polls until Truman began to pour great energy into his

campaign.

Truman began to campaign heavily within the Republican-dominated congress, but when his attempt failed he took his campaign to the

people.

He traveled throughout the country spreading his message of “Give’em hell, Harry” and upset Dewey to become the 33rd US

President.
