Location

The Seminoles were located in northern and central Florida.

Seminole Indians still own and live on a reservation located in southern Florida.

Food and ClothingThe Seminole Indians

grew and ate corn, pumpkins, and beans.

They were also hunters and fishermen who ate fish, bears, and deer.

The Seminole women wore necklaces, and men wore long shirts.

They were known for their clothing of bright colors and design known as patchwork.

Indians lived in the swamp.

Their houses were called chickees.

The chickees were made of mud, water, and palmetto leaves.

The house was open and had a raised floor.

A major tradition of the Seminole Indians was the Green Corn Ceremony.

This ceremony was held once a year, and it celebrated the beginning of the farming season.

The ceremony lasted anywhere from 4 to 8 days.

The people of the tribe would play games and dance.

Traditions

The Seminole Native American tribe was created through the combination of several tribes including the Creeks of Alabama.

The Seminole people pass stories down through their families called legends. They help to explain the reason behind many events, especially those in nature.
