What is global warming? How does it effect air and air pollution?

What is the Greenhouse Gas effect?

Page 3: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

Basically, Global warming is when the earth heats up (the temperature rises).

It happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature.

This hurts many people, animals, and plants. Many cannot take this change so they get sick and eventually die.

When you burn fossil fuels for electricity sources (natural, gas, and coal), it pollutes the air.

This is because pollutants, which are chemicals that pollute the air, land, or water, are sent into the air.

Also, air pollution occurs when trash is burned.

What is air pollution?

Air pollution is to contaminate the air by sending out harmful substances.

How does this effect Global Warming?

Air pollution is collected in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket that catches the sun's high temperature. This causes the planet to become warmer.

Page 6: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

The greenhouse gases are: Carbon dioxide Water vapor Nitrous oxide Methane

This causes heat and light to go through the atmosphere, but cannot get back out.

The 'Greenhouse Effect' occurs when heat is trapped in the atmosphere by gases

The temperature on earth gets a lot higher.

Where is coal being burning?Where are power plants located in PA?

• Waste coal is burned in two places in Pennsylvania:

- Shade Township- Seward

This map is showing the different types of power plants located

in Pennsylvania.

A map of PA showing all five nuclear power plants in their

respective counties. Everywhere on the map that

has a nuclear power plant, the cancer statistics are high.

The numbers in each county represent men and women with cancer. The numbers near these power plants are unusually high.

How is temperature being effected because of global warming?

Page 13: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

When temperature increases, global warming begins.

When the greenhouse gases capture heat and light from the sun, the temperature rises.

This causes plants, animals, and even humans to die, because they cannot take the change.

Where is it burned? Centralia Incinerator, Lawrence

Park

What does burning trash do to the environment? Smoke stacks comes

out of pipes and pollutes the air.

How is trash burned? Burn barrels of trash

What is the Clean Air Act?What are ozone monitors, where are they

located? What can you do to help air global warming?

Page 18: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

The Clean Air Act is planned to improve air quality, reducing air pollution. But, more than 30 million Americans still continue to breath unhealthy air.

Pennsylvania’s Clean Air Plans -Reduce Fine Particulate Pollution-Reduce Ozone Pollution-Reduce Carbon Monoxide-Reduce Sulfur Dioxide Pollution-Multi-Pollutant Regulations/Plans-Reduce Toxic Emissions-Reduce Pollution from Vehicles

Page 19: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

An ozone monitor is electric equipment that monitors for ozone attentions in the air.

To the left is a picture of a type of ozone monitor.

Page 20: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

In Pennsylvania, nearly 5 million people (children, the elderly, and those with chronic respiratory disease) are at risk from in pollution in 31 counties with ozone monitors.

Because the Bush administration is weakening clean air protections, Pennsylvania’s air pollution problems stand to get worse.

Choose air-friendly products. Lots of products are made with smog-forming chemicals that get in the air.

Drive less and drive smart. One way to drive less is to carpool with others. Also, accelerate gradually while driving so not too much gas is released.

Save energy. Burning fossil fuels and trash pollutes the air. Use less gasoline, natural gas, and electricity. One simple way to save energy is remembering to turn off lights while leaving a room.

Do not waste. Ways not to waste are to reuse bags, use recycled products, and recycle paper, plastic, and metals.

What does air pollution damage in children’s health? What is Pennsylvania doing to try and prevent this?

Where is Pennsylvania ranked?

Page 24: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

Annual Air Pollution Damage to Children’s Health in Pennsylvania:

Health Effect Estimated Cases Range Infant Deaths (Post-neonatal) 20 12 – 2022 Asthma ER Visits 3,000 400 – 7,300 Acute Bronchitis 40,000 21,000 – 51,000 Asthma Attacks 150,000 120,000 – 180,000 Missed School Days 900,000 700,000 – 1 million

The American Lung Association gave 28 counties in Pennsylvania a “F” for air pollution and that’s just for smog.

Page 25: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

Pennsylvania is currently applying a Clean Vehicle Program. This will reduce smog and prevent respiratory disease.

Clean Vehicle Program: Beginning with model year 2008, “new”

passenger cars and light-duty trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 8,500 pounds or less that are sold or leased and titled in Pennsylvania must be certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) or be certified for sale in all 50 states.

Page 26: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

Pennsylvania is ranked 8 of 50 worst cancer risked states because of air pollution.

This picture shows how Pennsylvania compared to the other states has many pollutants in the air and is one of the worst states

Page 27: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

As you can see in this map it shows how Pennsylvania is covered in soot and smog pollution compared to the other states (gases).

Entire county is in nonattainmentPart of county is in nonattainment

Nonattainment- air quality in a nearby area that fails to meet standards of Clean Air Act

Page 28: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

What is an alternative way of electricity involving air?

Page 29: By: Kristen, Colleen, Emily, Danielle, Grace, Jackie, Joe, Brian, Carly, Hannah and Nicole

The Commonwealth in Pennsylvania has over 30 coal-fired power plants, which is a big reason why we create more global warming pollution than every state but Texas and California.

Solar and wind power are clean, renewable energy resources.

We can use the wind to power to create clean energy resources, to decrease global warming in Pennsylvania.

The wind that blows over America’s Great Plains could provide enough power for the entire country.

By 2025, we plan to use at least 25% more electricity from renewable energy resources.
