Run along the sea floor to capturelarge amounts of marine life.
The nets are about 50 metres wide, that’s half an acre!
The net catches all sorts of creatures, from crabs to dolphins and very rare corals.
Pros•Efficiency-Bottom trawling provides an effective and efficient way to fish fast and catch some ground fish that are usually inaccessible.
•When fishing leads to more fish?-"Fish persist at trawling intensitieswhere they would have gone extinct otherwise."
Cons•High levels of discards•Damage to seabed•Negative effect on tourism
Bottom trawling of NZ
• Orange roughy and Hoki are trawled in NZ waters - These include some of NZ’s biggest exports.
