WHAT WE WANTED TO KNOW?

We wanted to know if there was a difference in the mean amount of time it took different brands of soda to go flat.

WHAT WE DID We went to Target Bought a 12 pack of each of the 8 brands of

soda.SunkistDiet PepsiCoke ZeroSprite Zero Mountain DewA&W Root BeerPepsiGinger Ale

We used 6 cans of each brand of soda

WHAT WE DID We laid 6 plastic cups across a table We poured one can of Sunkist in each

of the each 6 plastic cups. Then we timed the number of minutes

it took for the bubbles to consistently stop rising to the top of the cup.

We did the same process in the same location for each of the remaining 7 brands of soda.

OUR VARIABLES Sunkist Diet Pepsi Coke Zero Sprite Zero Mountain Dew A&W Root Beer Pepsi Ginger Ale

HYPOTHESESHo: There is no difference in the mean time it takes for a can of soda to become flat for each brand of soda. ( µ1=µ2=µ3=µ4=µ5=µ6=µ7=µ8)

HA: There is a difference in the mean time it takes for a can of soda to become flat for each brand of soda.

ASSUMPTIONS & CONDITIONS Random: We used a random number generator

to select the case off the shelf at Target. We selected the cans at random by using a random number generator (Multistage randomization)

10% condition: The 6 samples of each soda are less than 10% of all sodas.

Equal Variance: The boxplots of soda data are approximately equal spread.

Nearly Normal: The boxplots show no obvious skewdness.

Independent Groups: The amount of time it takes for one brand of soda to go flat should not affect another.

ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE

ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE With F-statistic of 27.707 there are 7

and 40 degrees of freedom. With a p-value this small (less

than .0001) we reject the null hypothesis.

We have strong evidence that at least one mean time for a brand of soda to become flat is different than the others.

CONCLUSIONS

We are not surprised by this outcome. Different sodas have different formulas, and

the amount of carbonation depends on the formula.

We correctly predicted that the amount of time necessary for sodas to become flat varies with the type of soda.

Canada Dry Ginger Ale and Sprite Zero appear to take a longer time to become flat than the other brands that we tested.

Coke Zero and Mountain Dew appear to become flat in a shorter amount of time than the other brands we tested.
