THE HABITATS OF COMMON

ANIMALSBy Jake Wilner

Squirrel

Most squirrels live in tree nests called drays. Squirrels usually build their drays high up in forks of trees. Drays are about the size of a football and made of twigs, leaves, pine needles, or grass. You may also find squirrels living in a hollow tree trunks, or they may take over a bird’s nest.

Chipmunk

Many chipmunks construct large burrows that can be about 3.5 meters wide. They often have several hidden entrances. Their burrow is also where they store their food for the winter.

Robin

Robins live in nests made of dead grass and twigs. The females build the nest from the inside out. The nest is then reinforced with soft mud. When the nest is finished it is 6-8 inches wide and 3-6 inches high. Robin nests are usually on one or more horizontal branches. Nests are usually hidden under a layer of thick leaves.

Sparrow

You can find sparrows almost anywhere that is a rural or urban area. You will almost never find sparrows in places where there aren’t any people. In deserts or mountains sparrows can only survive if they are in a community with people.

Mourning Dove

The mourning dove lives in a loose nest made of twigs, grass, weeds, and pine needles. Their nests are so loose that sometimes you can see through the bottom of it. Their nests are 5-25 feet above the ground. Normally their nests are hidden beneath leaves and in trees or large shrubs.
