Self Discovery - Aristotle

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” - Aristotle

“I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self.” - Aristotle

Self Discovery

Self Discovery

Self Discovery

Self Discovery: Definition

“It is the act or process of gaining knowledge or

understanding of your abilities, character, and feelings”

Self Discovery & Self-reflectionSelf-reflection is a powerful tool for cultivating afulfilling, meaningful life.

Personal self-discovery is “one of the most far-reaching purposes of higher education”

Basically, tertiary institutions strive to enable students to find themselves and their purpose

Personal self-discovery is “knowledge of one’s own talents, interests, values, aspirations, and weaknesses [and] discovery of a unique personal identity”

Self Discovery

“When we get to know ourselves, we are more open and loving toward others, because we see their humanity and the gifts that they bring.”

In other words, once you know your priorities and perspectives, you can make deliberate decisions based on those things, intentionally creating a more connected life…

Ponder this…

“The illiterate of the future will not be the person who cannot read. It will be the person who does not know how to learn.” — Alvin Toffler

Self Discovery, Education & Talent

Within the context of education and talent, self-discovery can be intentionally facilitated in the Following ways:

a) Introduce students to a wide range of ideas b) Provide opportunities to meet peers and role

models c) Assist students in considering new paths

for life after graduationd) Allow students to test a variety of fields and

tasks e) Help students discover their limitations; and f) Motivate students to reach their full

potential as humans

Self Discovery, Education & Talent

A talent is defined as the ability by a person that is inherent, inborn, or naturally occurring.

A talent is said to be a special ability to do something without prior experience, study, or tutelage. It is often classified or compared to an instinct or a certain flair for doing something without extra effort and almost perfect in execution.

Self Discovery, Education & Talent

Since a talent is innate, only some people have actually acquired it.

A talent makes it somewhat restricting - some people have it and others do not.

Because it occurs naturally, a talent is also seen as

raw ability which can be developed and improved over time with direction, like instruction and training.

Consistent improvement of any ability or craft gives

an advantage for any individual.

Changing Times; Changing Tides

Once upon a time the goal of most parents was to ensure their children got good education and children were in turn expected to study hard in school, graduate successfully and get a good job.

We were told "Education is the key to success". Times have changed and it seems success has changed keys too.

The great crusade of education being the great equalizer has changed. Gone are the days when everyone strived to be a doctor, engineer, teacher, accountant, lawyer, scientist, policeman (?) etc.

Changing Times…

There's been a paradigm shift from books to talent. Today youths are paid millions for participating in reality shows, models, actors, musicians, dancers rake in millions while professionals get meagre sums and most times embark on strikes to solicit "better pay".

People no longer get rewarded for burning the 'night candle' but for talent. No wonder most youths drop out of school to pursue their passion & talent.

Questions that help cultivate self-awareness

The questions we ask influence the quality of our lives.

Ask good questions, and good things will come into your life.

Questions fire up our curiosity and they also illuminate the depth of our soul and psyche.

This kind of reflection leads to growth, compassion, contribution and appreciation

Some Questions to Discuss & Reflect…1. “Who am I?”

2. “What do I need right now more than anything else?”  3. “What meaning can I draw from this experience?” 4. “What feeling do I most want to have in my life? What

do I want to be doing more of in my life? What do I want to be doing less of in my life?”

 5. “What am I resisting, or attaching to?” 6. What are my gifts? How can I share them with the

world? 7. “How can I celebrate each day, or the moments of my

life?”

The Bridge: Education & Talent

How we learn, how we build our careers and what those careers might be - these are all evolving at a rapid pace.

Taking an active role in developing skills for the future will likely mean the difference between a thriving career and a stagnant one; a thriving organisation and a sinking one.

The Bridge… CIHCDN

Human Capital Development (HCD) is functionally different from Human Resources (HR).

HCD is philosophically different from task-driven focus of Human Resources (HR); in that HCD recognizes that the development and growth of people in organizations and businesses are an important and essential asset to the organization's future success.

The Bridge… CIHCDN

In an organizational context therefore, the collective attitudes, skills and abilities of the organization's human capital (people assets) establish performance and productivity.

 Accordingly, expenditures related to

training, development, health, and support are an investment in productivity, not just an expense.

End

“We can't be afraid of change. You may feel very secure in the pond that you are in,

but if you never venture out of it, you will never know that there is such a thing as an ocean, a sea. Holding onto something that is good for you now, may be the very

reason why you don't have something better.”
