This document details the music, instruments and equipment that is the property of the

Edinburgh University Music Society and stored in the committee room in the basement of

the Reid Concert Hall, correct to the 1st March 2013.

The initial catalogue was conducted in April 2012 by Andrew Mason (President 2012-13),

Alice McLeish (Sinfonia Manager 2012-13) and Gareth Dennis (Publicity Manager 2012-13)

and was the first extensive catalogue and tidy of the committee room since the EUMS

centenary in 1967. As such, it seemed appropriate to conduct a thorough catalogue as the

society approaches its 150th anniversary in 2017.

Following this, much of the music was given on permanent loan to other choral societies in

Edinburgh and further afield. These loaned works, documented below, remain the property

of EUMS, a fact suitably acknowledged by the societies in question. The music library has

also been advertised on the EUMS website for hire. The 2012-13 EUMS committee decided

that hire should be for a nominal rate of £10/month/set plus postage. As part of the

society’s aim to increase the ease of provision to younger musicians, student and youth

music groups will not incur these hire costs, and will only pay for the postage of music.

These rates are not binding and can be altered by the decision of any future committee.

An accurate catalogue of the instruments in the committee room was deemed necessary as

many items had gone missing since 2005. The committee deemed that instruments and

equipment could be hired from EUMS as long as permission was given by the President. Sign

out sheets should be used in order to keep track of equipment/instrument hire. The

committee decided that hire to other societies or student bodies would be free of charge

but external bodies would incur a small fee, at the discretion of the President.

It was suggested that the incumbent President also act as ‘Manager of the Committee

Room’ whose role includes: co-ordinating the hire of music, instruments and equipment as

well as ensuring the room remain tidy and that any new music, instruments or equipment

be added to the catalogue to keep it up to date and accurate.

MUSIC CATALOGUE

Music to Keep

This list contains both orchestral and choral sets deemed important to remain in the

possession of EUMS. This was either because of its potential use as tour or recurrent

repertoire or due to its importance In EUMS history. Such pieces include the songs by our

founder Herbert Oakley and the commissioned EUMS centenary piece by Rawesthorne.

A Note on Orchestral Nomenclature

Orchestration of pieces is written in number form. The first group of four numbers is the

woodwind and the second group of four is the brass. The letters that follow define the extra

instruments required such as percussion. If a plus precedes a number (especially in the

woodwind) it means the extra, less common, instrument is needed.

For example: +3+3+3+3 4231 T Perc Hp Org Str is two flutes and piccolo, two oboes and cor

anglais, two clarinets and bass clarinet, two bassoons and contrabassoon, four horns, two

trumpets, three trombones, one tuba, timpani, other percussion, harp, organ and strings.

other musical societies for their use. Even though much of this music will not be used by

EUMS directly it should still be cared for as it is a large, valuable resource which may be

incredibly useful to EUMS or other musical groups in the future.

Music on Permanent Loan

Following the full catalogue it was decided which music should remain in the possession of

EUMS and the rest was offered to other musical societies and the University Library to have

on permanent loan. The agreement was that we would be credited whenever the gifted

music was performed and that we would be able to ‘hire’ the sets back at any time, free of

charge. The hope was that the music would be used and enjoyed instead of just remaining

in the committee room.

INSTRUMENT AND EQUIPMENT CATALOGUE

One of the main reasons for producing this catalogue was to reduce the loss of EUMS

property. This has been particularly prevalent in recent years. This list documents the

valuable and important EUMS collection of equipment and instruments that should be

checked regularly. A sign-out and booking system was put in place in 2012 so that the

President, as Manager of the Committee Room, may better organise this equipment and

efficiently chase up missing objects.
