Winter 2012 Curriculum

The way God designed our bodies is a modelfor understanding our lives together as a church: every parT dependenT on every oTher parT,

the parts we mention and the parts we don't, the parts we see and the parts we don't.

If one part hurts, every other part is involved in the hurt,

and in the healing. If one part flourishes,

every other part enters into the exuberance.

you are Christ's body—that's who you are! you must never forget this.

only as you accept your part of that body does your "part" mean anything.

1 Corinthians 12:25-27 MSG

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:8-10

Winter 2012 Curriculum

The possibility is high that each of us have gone through a school system that taught us about some, if not all, of the intricacies of the human body. When functioning at its best, the human body is quite powerful, but one injury, sickness or malfunction can impair its effectivenss. The same is true of the body of Christ, which is the church. We, as believers in Jesus Christ, collectively make up one body. And collectively, we can be powerful in our effectivness, but we can just as easily become impaired

if we don’t take steps to ensure our “state of health.”

At Valley Christian Center, we recognize that each person – or each body part – is vital. And because each part is vital, we make helping individuals discover their part of the body a priority. We refer to it as helping you Discover

God’s Story in You. What is your part? How has God made you to contribute to this world and to the body of Christ? If these are questions you haven’t answered yet,

we look forward to helping you find the answers!

Within this current By Design, you will find many things. You’ll find names of people who have discovered God’s Story in them and are leading different ministries, you’ll find opportunities that will help you Discover God’s Story in You, and you’ll find places where you can get connected to other members of the body of Christ and start creating

friendships that will last through eternity.

YOU ARE VITAL

This is a story that’s worth reading.

It’s about you. It’s about God.

It’s about us.

And it’s about what we can do when we

do it together. Ready?

Let’s delve in.

LifeScript | chapter 5 | Cleansing StreamLet’s face it. We all have baggage; some of it we know about, some of it we don’t. Part of living God’s Story in us forces us to take a look back at where we have been in life. Cleansing Stream is a “freedom” ministry that attempts to deal with the baggage in our lives. Cleansing Stream is NOT a support group as in a twelve-step program where you have to disclose your inner secrets to friends or strangers. Rather, it is a Biblically-based journey that surfaces problem spots in our lives and then, by God’s Spirit, gives us the courage and strength to find healing and wholeness. This ministry will help you find a depth of relationship with our Lord and others that will truly enhance your life. We offer classes on either Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings.

The Bible is the inspired Word of God, and every believer should study it in order to know the rich and vast content of God’s divine provisions. When God speaks, He does so through His Word. Therefore, we must study the Bible in order to let the word of God dwell in us.

That the World May KnowWould you like to save $5000 in the next 6 months? This class will put you well on the way towards that goal! Our Bible teacher, Ray Vander Laan, provides practical yet surprising life lessons for Christians today, in video and discussion formats. We take caring for the youngest members of our faith family and partnering with VCC families in the discipleship of their children very seriously. That’s why over 80 people volunteer regularly in Children’s Ministry and more are joining the team each week! We believe that everyone can play some part in helping to build the kingdom of God by helping kids grow to be fully engaged followers of Christ. The opportunities to serve are as varied as the children we minister to. Teaching, helping, gathering supplies, painting, singing, building, diaper changing, baby rocking, rocket building, shopping, greeting, organizing, playing, cooking, driving, planning, folder stuffing, baking, fundraising, etc., etc., etc. Every week, once a month or once a year, there is a lot to do and a lot more children to reach so get involved today. No matter what your God given design, there is a way for you to serve God’s kids, have fun and feel fulfilled while doing it! Join the team! Every one is doing it!

SECOND HALF 10:45 AM – 12:15 PM Children’s Church Service – (K-5th Grade)

Our curriculum, 252 Basics, uses Bible stories to teach core virtues. And to make it easy to understand, each principle is supported by a weekly Bottom Line—a short phrase so easy to remember that it can be reinforced at home throughout the week. In fact, when a kid transitions into middle school, we want that child to have experienced and own three basic truths modeled by Jesus in Luke 2:52 (light bulb moment—now you know what the 252 means):I need to make the wise choice | I can trust God no matter what | I should treat others the way I want to be treated

At Valley Christian Center, we believe that we are responsible for becoming Great Commission Christians, both in our own community and throughout the world. We can share God’s love by SENDING others to the missions field (locally and globally, with prayers and finances), by DOING service in our community at local outreach events, and by GOING on a short-term missions trip outside the U.S. at least once during our lives. Because God loves the lost and less fortunate, when we share the Gospel, assist and disciple them, we impart immeasurable worth and dignity to their lives. Browse the opportunities below, as well as at our Missions tables. You just might discover an opportunity that moves the heart of God and tugs at your heartstrings, too!

Doctors Giving Back (DGB)God has orchestrated remarkable circumstances for those in our own congregation to help build two orphanages and a hospital in Ethiopia. Doctors John and Jana Turns founded DGB to minister to the poorest of the poor in Ethiopia, bringing clinics, water filtration, food, and hope to thousands of destitute natives. In the many trips they have taken to Ethiopia to minister to others, they have found their own lives have been profoundly changed. They would love for you to join them on a trip or in equipping them to make their trips, even if you do not have a medical background. They promise to use your giftedness when you determine to ‘GO.’

When: Twice annually, with the next trip in March 2012 Contact: John Turns, MD, or Jana Turns, MD at [email protected]

Dreamfusion Jimi and Holly Merrell, founders of Dreamfusion, engage today’s culture with the power and love of God in a relevant, creative manner. Using Spirit-empowered evangelistic techniques, they desire to see a radical shift in how the world responds to the person and message of Jesus Christ. They minister in places where you might not normally expect to find a Christian ministry – at film festivals, coffee shops, local festivals, and wherever the light and love of God is needed. Jimi and Holly welcome your interest in and participation with their outreaches.

Contact: Jimi Merrell at [email protected]

M16 M16 Ministries is a prophetic evangelism, deliverance, and healing ministry led by Michael and Lisa Norton, longtime members of VCC. M16 Ministries invites you to participate in regular street ministry (Night Strike) outreaches in San Francisco, every 2nd and 4th Friday of each month. One of the most important lessons Jesus taught His disciples was how to pray. In response to the petition, “Teach us to pray,” Jesus said to them, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” He didn’t tell them if you pray or suggest you ought to pray. He said, “When you pray” (Matthew 6:5). The expectation is that we are to pray, and the model has been set. We are to pray that God’s Kingdom would increasingly invade earth, and that His good and perfect will would be done.

18-Hour Prayer Coverage | 1 Kings 8:28-29 Yet give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy, O LORD my God. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day. May your eyes be open toward this temple night and day, this place of which you said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ so that you will hear the prayer your servant prays toward this place.

Lead the life of a true intercessor and join 36 other prayer warriors as we cry out on behalf of Valley Christian Center Church and Schools. With 18 hours of continuous prayer, seven days per week, we are sure to gain the favor and ear of our Father! Sign up for a 30-minute/30-day incremental spot (you may pray wherever you are) and help keep the prayer wall high!

Service Intercession | Matthew 6:10 Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

A wise man once said; “The Meeting on Sunday morning is the spiritual barometer for what takes place on ‘The Hill’ the remainder of the week.” These words are a challenge to the people of VCC to petition God for His presence, direction, and blessing for our Sunday services. This is not a setting for personal prayer requests, but rather an environment to pray boldly and without abandon, with the intent to come alongside what the Father desires for our “Meeting.” *No childcare is available

The ministry of Valley Christian Schools is comprised of gifted people who fulfill God’s calling in their lives by willingly serving in a functioning role within this ministry. Students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff members – although distinctly different – join together each day as vital members of this School community. On any given Sunday, the congregation of Valley Christian Center hears wonderful stories about the accomplishments of the Schools’ students or staff. “Hearing” these stories gives us a glimpse into the success of this ministry; however, “seeing” VCS through the eyes of the students, parents, teachers and staff broadens the scope of the true significance of this ministry and the amazing work God is doing in and through the Schools. Take a look at Valley Christian Schools “Through Their Eyes.”

“when I think of Valley Christian schools, I see……a school that does well at taking away bad influences and allows us to see God and serve Him if you choose to. VCS puts you in a quiet environment to make lasting relationships with friends and teachers.” | Clayton/VChs Junior | …a place that has prepared me for college, supportive teachers and classmates that I’ve grown closer to over the years. I’ve spent most of my lifetime here and I’ve grown academically and in my faith.” | Amie/VChs senior | …a place where you can always find a friend and have someone to talk to. It’s a place where you can create long-lasting relationships. I feel I can go to any teacher with anything and they will talk with me and pray with me. They are always there to give me the support I need.” | Devyn/VCJh 7th Grade | …a family because it’s not a large school, so everyone knows and loves each other. The teachers are focused on your education and your well being. Our purpose is to create an atmosphere where people experience and connect with a Holy God and to free them to worship Him to their fullest design. That may happen through photography, singing, painting, dance, acting, and more… Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s masterpiece.” (NLT) What better description of His creativity in us is there? Has God placed a creative desire in you? We would love to help you fulfill that God-given design.

Romans 12:2 | “Being Transformed By the Renewing of Your Mind”In Proverbs 23 it says,

as a man thinks in his heart so is he (verse 7).

Our actions are a result of what we think.

Intellectually, we may believe something to be true,

but our real convictions come out in our actions.

This is why it is so important to renew our minds with the word of God.

We must take the scripture and implant it in our hearts

so that it is in alignment with what God has said.

If what is in our heart is scriptural,

then we will act based on that belief system.
