Picasso’s Early Life

•Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain.•His father, Don Jose, was an art teacher who helped train Picasso. •In school, Picasso got punished because he drew in his books and displeased his teachers. He wasn’t a good student!•He drew like the masters at a young age.

The First Communion, 1896in the Museo Picasso, Barcelona, Spain

I was surprised that Picasso could paint like this because most of the books I read only showed Cubism and Cubism looks very different.

Picasso’s Blue Period1901-1904

•Picasso’s friend died and Picasso was poor at the time. He also was very lonely because he was away from home. Picasso was very sad.•He drew beggars, prisoners and poor people.•He made all the faces and fingers in his paintings long and droopy.•He used mostly the colors blue & green.

Breakfast of a Blind Man, 1903in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City

I like this piece because of the way he shows the shadows. This painting makes me feel lonely.

Picasso’s Rose Period

1904-1906 •After his blue period, Picasso moved to Paris. He was surrounded by artists, he fell in love and his mood changed from sad to happy. •He liked to paint acrobats and circus people with their pets. •He used mostly orange, red and rose paint in his pictures.

Family of Saltimbanques, 1905in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

I like that he uses dark and light colors at the same time.

Cubism 1907

•Picasso liked to change and was bored with doing ordinary paintings and wanted to try different things. He wanted to show things different ways. •In 1907 Picasso invented Cubism with Gorges Braque. •They painted objects that looked broken-up and made it look like lots of squares and triangles assembled together. •A lot of people didn’t understand Cubism. Do you like Cubism?

Three Musicians, 1921in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City

I like that you can see the instruments but it’s still Cubism.

Guernica, 1937 in Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain

The Nazis bombed Guernica and killed lots of people. Picasso was very mad, so he painted Guernica to show people how terrible war was.Picasso made it a very big painting - it was 12 ft. high by 26 ft. long. He made it so big to be able to fit all his anger. He used black, white and gray paint because it was a serious painting.

Why is Picasso so important?

• Picasso created Cubism with his friend, Gorges Braque. It was a different way of looking and painting things for the first time.

• He was the first person to make 3D paintings by gluing things on his canvases.
