Transport Sector – Present Scenario
One of the largest in the world
Serves a land mass of 3.3 million km2 and population of over one billion
Enormous growth of transport sector in the last 50 years
Volume of railway freight increased five folds and
passenger kms seven folds
Length of surfaced roads increased nine folds
Tonnage handled by India's major/minor ports increased
sixteen folds
Air freight tonnage increased 30 folds Source:- India Vision 2020

Freight Traffic (MT)
Freight Traffic (MT)
AN INCREASE OF 448 MT IN JUST 10 YEARS
Areas Of Concern
Falling market share (90% to 30%)
Capacity constraints on high density network.
Differential speeds of trains .
Inadequate Ports / IAs connectivity .
Inability to carry longer/heavier trains .
Lower throughput / longer turn-around
High speed freight corridors not available.
Scope For Improvement
Only following possibilities :--
Upgrading the existing network
Creation of a new passenger corridor
Creation of a new dedicated freight
corridor
Objectives Of The Project
OBJECTIVES
Create additional rail infrastructure to cater to high levels of transport demand
Reduce unit cost of transportation resulting in market competitive rail tariff for customer
Provide seamless end to end solution to the customers
Segregate freight infrastructure for focused approach on both passenger and freight business of Railways
Create rail connectivity to bulk customers not using rail network through PPP model
IT packaging of Freight Services
Increase rail share in freight market

Progress on Land Acquisition
Land Acquisition is being done as per Railway
Amendment Act, 2008. Compensation is guided by the
Principles enshrined in National Rehabilitation and Re-
settlement Policy (NRRP), 2007
Land Acquisition is required for 10667 hectares.
So far, 85% of the total land acquired .
Entire DFC land acquisition is likely to be completed by
2013.
Major Breakthrough in Environmental Clearances
• Wild Life clearances for Sanjay Gandhi National Park & Balaji Ambaji Bird Sanctuary obtained under NWPA 1972.
• Diversion of 58 Ha of forest land in Maharashtra
approved by FAC under FCA 1980 .
• Permission of Empowered Committee obtained for cutting trees in Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) .
Future Corridors
• Future Corridors
East – West Corridor (Kolkata–Mumbai) 2000 Kms.
North-South Corridor (Delhi-Chennai) 2173 Kms.
East Coast Corridor (Kharagpur-Vijayawada) 1100 Kms.
Southern Corridor (Chennai-Goa) 890 Kms.
DFCCIL has assigned this study to RITES to be completed by Dec 2013.
Great opportunity for construction (equipment & machinery) and manufacturing industry.
Opportunities in public private partnership (PPP) in construction.
Developing more economic zones through DMICDC.
High capacity Rolling stock for DFC.
Setting up of logistic parks.
Freight Business.
