Backyard Compost Bin

Purpose:

The purpose is to learn about composting and how it works!

MaterialsPrepared container 1/3 greens, 2/3 brownsThermometer and graduated

cylinder 500 mL soil 250 mL of non-chlorinated

water(pond or lake water)

Procedures• Fill compost column 1/3 shredded “green”.• Fill rest of compost column with shredded

“brown”.• Add 500 mL of soil to column. Layer soil

throughout column.• Carefully shake to mix materials.• Add 250 mL of water.• Carefully shake to mix materials.• If the materials do not appear slightly damp, add

small amounts of water compost until it is damp but not wet.
