used his trident to rule the waves.Was an important deity for sea-faring Greeks.Poseidon failed to become the patron of

Athens, as he was in contest with Athena and lost. Poseidon created a well with his trident; however, it was salt water and not very useful to the population. Athena, created an olive tree, a symbol of peace and prosperity, and was granted the patronage of Athens.
