Jazz music was very popular after the Harlem Renaissance which began in the early 1920s The Harlem Renaissance was an artistic movement in New York City that was the center of African American Culture during the 1920s. Jazz musicians had a great impact on the culture of the 1920s through the 1930s because of the radio. Jazz originated in the American South, such as New Orleans, Kansas City and Chicago, most of the musicians came from the South too. Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines were some of the jazz musicians during the 20s. During the thirties Jazz music was arranged and written for big bands A big band is a musical group that played Jazz music during the Swing era, which was in the 1930s and 40s. Some popular items were: celery, pickles, olives, fresh fruit, jellos, saltine crackers, salads Kraft came out with 'American' cheeses such as Velveeta, cheddar, and American! Gerber invented the first jarred baby food. Cereals were very popular at the time too, Wheaties especially. Baked goods such as bread were beginning to be found pre-processed at the grocery store. The love of the white Wonderbread was wide spread. Beauty pageants originated in the 1920s by the hotel men of Atlantic city. It began as a sort of festival and bathing contest on the beach. Later, they helped define the medias view of beauty during the time period. 1920's beauty pageants initiated the fashions. Some of the first 'skimpier' bathing suits were seen on the contestants. Beauty pageants were a large part in many young women's social lives as well as their mothers. Beauty pageants gave distinction classes.
