Allison Harrell, CPA, Audit Senior Manager, Thomas Howell Ferguson, P.A., Tallahassee, FL

What is this work/life balance issue that everyone keeps talking about? We are accountants – work IS our life, or at least that is how we have been stereotyped for years. This is not the case anymore, either for our profession or every other profession out there. The workforce is changing, which includes increases in dual earner families, single parent and single person households, working mothers, and elder care responsibilities. Everyone is striving to achieve that perfect balance between excelling in careers and maintaining quality of life. This session will discuss how to do just that.

In this session, you will learn: • Five “lies” related to conventional time

management thinking • How to measure the value of your time, literally,

Tom is best known for his role in helping CPAs “shape their future” through his work at the Maryland Association of CPAs and the Business Learning Institute, a center for the development of leadership and strategic thinking skills for CPAs. He stands out in three areas: leadership, learning, and technology. He was recently named as one of the Top 25 Thought Leaders in Public Accounting Technology by CPA Technology Advisor, and one of the Top 25 Online Influencers in Talent Management by HR Examiner. Tom and his team have facilitated and taught the Major Firms Group (Top 100 CPA firms) for the AICPA, the AICPA Leadership Academy, and facilitated strategic plans with numerous national AICPA committees and leading CPA firms from all over the U.S., along with corporations and non-profits. Tom has also co-authored (with Gretchen Pisano) BLI’s i2a – Insights to Action, a strategic thinking system that is used to cultivate leaders, and a strategic planning process to help organizations navigate today’s permanent whitewater environment. He is a nationally recognized author, speaker, and consultant. Tom and the MACPA have been featured in the Journal of Accountancy, Accounting Today magazine, and AccountingWeb.
