A Note From Eddie Jones:Dear Bishop Wordsworth School,
AUSTRALIA RUGBY TOUR 2017Going on tour is an experience not to be missed that will create the memories which make being part of a team such a rewarding experience. It is one of the best examples of how rugby brings people together to forge bonds that last a lifetime. That applies to everyone in the game – from the senior England team to a school – and we all share that connection. And if you work hard to be successful on the pitch, you’ll enjoy yourselves off it even more. With the best wishes of everyone involved in England Rugby.
Eddie Jones England Rugby Head Coach

There is, of course, a deep irony in the fact that the national rugby team’s record breaking unbeaten run was due (at least in part) to the influence and guidance of Eddie Jones. Partly good fortune, to be sure, but there is also some extraordinarily good coaching that is going on to help our 1st XV rediscover their win-ning ways and, in due course, come to challenge the might of the Southern Hemisphere. I can’t wait! The challenge offered by the countries south of the Equa-tor is an attractive proposition at school level too. The boys from Bishop’s have done spectacularly well at all levels this season and it will be a superb end to the rugby year for the senior boys to tour. I am sure that they will take excellence, sportsmanship and ca-maraderie with them on their travels to Hong Kong and Australia; we could hardly choose better sporting am-bassadors. I wish everyone on the 2017 Tour well – I am sure that you will have a fantastic time. S D Smallwood Head Master

Dear Parents/Guardians
As you will no doubt be aware, this year is a very tough one for schools across the country in terms of budget setting. The national media has been carrying headlines which eloquently express the difficulties that are faced by schools when they are faced by the toxic combination of falling budgets and spiralling costs – and that is before the impact of a new National Funding Formula for Schools, the outcome of which is as yet unknown.
Bishop’s is affected by the same cost pressures. The removal of our Education Services Grant, together with rapidly increasing employers’ costs has left a hole in the school budget for 2017-2018 of considerable size. We have to live within our means, and to do so next year means that we have to cut costs – and because our budget is very lean that means that the cuts will impact on the curriculum and staffing. What is more, in common with most school sixth forms, ours runs at a loss annually. That is where some (but not all) of the cuts must fall.
To achieve the economies needed (we need to save around £150,000) we are planning to take the following steps:
• Teach Key Stage 3 Art classes in tutor groups (in other words halve the number of teaching groups) • Reduce the number of sets at Key Stage 4 in the core subjects (in Year 10 from September 2017
and Year 11 the following year) • Reduce the staffing on Games lessons where this is possible • Not offer some non-core A level subjects at Year 12 which have relatively low take-up and are not
required for HE progression (Year 13 students will complete their courses as planned in 2017-2018). In the next academic year this will apply to Business Studies, PE (BWS only) and Classical Civilisation. If your son has one of these three subjects as an AS choice on his sixth form application, we will assume that he wishes to take up his reserve subject unless you indicate otherwise by Friday 7 April 2017
• Reduce Teaching time at A level and introduce a system of supervised study time to compensate
In addition the staff will have a pay freeze during the 2017-2018 academic year, which will save over £30,000 on its own.
None of these are easy options, but the governors have opted for a range of measures that are the ‘least worst’ – in other words they will reduce our costs as necessary but cause the least damage in doing so. We will (of course) need to review the position again ready for the 2018-2019 academic year; the additional boys joining Year 7 in September will attract lagged funding which will help, but there will also be additional costs to take into account too at that stage.
I regret the necessity of these measures, but hope that this gives you a clear picture of what is planned.
Yours sincerely
S D Smallwood Head Master

Bishops has a strong tradition of touring, when I joined the school as a boy in 1996 the school had just returned from Canada, in the subsequent years the school went to Australia and then South Africa. My year however like others in the past missed a tour cycle and this is something I have ensured has not happened since, as I place such a high val-ue on its worth and experience. At a recent BOBs event in Lon-don I was talking to some of our leavers from 2011/12 who I took on my first tour to Italy in 2011. We couldn’t stop laughing, the stories and memories still fresh and great to look back on. The boys on this year’s tour already have some pretty special mem-ories and tour will only add to these and make them
stronger as a group and individuals as we look forward to the sea-son ahead.I feel it important to get the balance between playing high quality rugby while seeing, experiencing and taking in the country we visit. A tour is about the team mates you are with and the experiences you share, and to have the opportunity to tour a rugby great such as Australia (despite recent results!! – Scotland!!) and an emerging rugby nation in Hong Kong is not one to be taken lightly.Going back to Australia is exciting on a personal and professional level as we have built relationships with other schools and staff and so I, like all the boys, am very excited by the prospect of the forth coming tour, its fixtures, the excursions and the moments to be shared and savoured for many years to come.

What they do:“Wings for Life”, is a charity which specialises in spinal cord dam-age research and rehabilitation. It was started in 2003, when two times motocross world champion Heinz Kinigadner’s son was in an accident which left him a tetraplegic. They aim to tackle the prob-lems that people face after having a traumatic injury to the spinal column and are there to support the injured and families affected. We are hoping to help fuel this research even further, as 10% of all the money we raise will be donated to this fabulous charity.
Why we have chosen this charity:Jack Fishwick used to be a student at Bishop Wordsworth School, and only a couple of years ago, his life took a dramatic twist.Whilst playing for Wimbledon RFC as a 26-year-old second row forward, he was tragically involved in an accident on pitch. Since the accident the charity has been working with Jack to aid his recovery.Wings for life have really helped Jack through a particularly tough time, and he is making a very good recovery considering his inju-ries.

I would like to wish both the players and coaches of Bishop Word-sworth’s School all the best for their summer tour of both Hong Kong and Australia.I was fortunate enough to have gained my first experiences of rugby tours whilst at BWS when we travelled to Italy in 2011 and also played and hosted a Canadian touring side in 2012. Since my first experiences of touring, I have more recently traveled to Japan and Korea in order to represent Hong Kong in the Asia Rugby Championship - a vital build up to 2019 World Cup qualification! Both my experiences with BWS and Hong Kong have played an integral role in my development as a player and I’m sure the boys will reap the rewards of playing rugby across two different continents this summer. Being able to experience what rugby is like in terms of style and condi-tions the other side of the world will prove invaluable to their improvement both as individuals and a squad.I recall undertaking ‘spotters’ in a Tokyo park this spring like we did in an Italian car park (with a water bottle) in 2011 and overcoming a severe language barrier with one of the Italian referees. I’m sure this year’s squad will find as equally innovative ways to tackle the challenges touring pro-vides.
A Note From Robbie Keith:
Whether this is the boys first or last tour, it will provide amazing memories and stories from both on and off the field to discuss in years to come, like I still do with those that were on the Italy 2011 tour. This tour provides an ideal platform to begin the season and build upon the great suc-cess of the last. I look forward to watching in Hong Kong, see you there!
