Visited places Rio de Janeiro Known as the Marvelous City, Rio de Janeiro is an amazing, and magical place! Surrounded by stunning mountains, white sandy beaches and tropical rain forest, Rio has one of the most spectacular sceneries and ecosystems of the world. A Portuguese navigator landed in the city in January 1502 and confusing bay with a river (Rio) named the region as "Rio de Janeiro." During the 17th century the city became important because of sugar cane export from its port, however what really made it boom was the gold rush in the 18th century. In 1763 the city became the capital of Brazil and continued as such until the creation of Brasilia in 1960. Rio is now considered the vacation capital of Brazil and its inhabitants, known as 'Cariocas', who live life with enthusiasm. At the beach, try the "mate" accompanied by the famous biscuit flour O Globo. In late afternoon a good choice is the neighbourhood of Urca where people gather to see the sunset and the night arrive. There are many options for food and snacks along the beach, including fresh coconut water and blended acai with granola, a local favourite. Be sure to check out some of the night markets and the famous Sunday Brazilian artisan and handicraft market located in the neighbourhood of Ipanema, just blocks away from the beach. Carnival and New Year's Eve are the main events in Rio, where you can meet travellers from around the world! Besides the festivities, mountaineering and climbing are very present during the days of Rio, and it is easy to see why, with the mountain rising off the beaches, resulting from the separation of the South American and African continents. There is always something to discover and enjoy in Rio, from the sunset at Arpoador's beach, samba in Lapa, walking through the streets of Santa Teresa, to of course, Carnival, creating some of the greatest mix of cultures in Brazil. You can venture on bike through the city, climb Sugar Loaf mountain or trek to Christ the Redeemer, visit the multiple and diverse beaches in the city, and even take a favela tour to have a once in a lifetime raw, and heart expanding experience.

Foz do Iguaçú Foz do Iguaçu is nothing less than a "New Wonders of Nature," according to the New Seven Wonders Foundation. It is hard to imagine any person who has visited Foz do Iguaçu and was not delighted with the strength and beauty of the falls, a series of 275 waterfalls reaching up to 90 meters high. On the Brazilian side, a trail takes you to visit the bottom of the falls with a view to Devil's Throat, and on the Argentinian side, the most rudimentary track, "Wild," will take you to the top of the Devil's Throat with a spectacular view. We definitely recommend visiting both sides! In addition to this wonder of nature, Foz do Iguaçu provides an abundance of interesting and adventurous activities, such as taking the Macuco Safari Boat Tour, which runs through the canyons and leads you to take a bath in the waterfalls of Cataratas do Iguaçu. There are also helicopter, hiking and rafting tours available for the adventurous. Visiting the "Usina Hidrelétrica de Itaipu" (Hydroelectric Power Plant of Iguaçu) is also a must-see attraction of the giant turbines which turn water into energy. Located on the triple border between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, the city saw a large increase in population and economic growth from the construction of the Itaipu Hydroelectric plant. It represents an important role in the region, as a large part of Brazil relies on its energy production.

Manaus

Amazônia The Amazon, also known as the Amazon rainforest or the Amazon Jungle, is an abundantly humid forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. This regions is one of the six major biomes of the planet, reaching about 7 million square km, and approximately 5 million of it is covered by tropical rainforest. Nine nations have territories in the Amazon; Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and France. However, the largest part of this territory belongs to Brazil. The amazon represents more than a half of the tropical forests that exist in the world with the greatest biodiversity of any other rainforest. The most common tours in this area are called "observation tours" in which visitors can walk through the forest, observing the diverse animal and plant species, visiting indigenous communities, and even trying their hand at fishing on Amazonian Rivers. To take the most advantage of the trip, it is recommended to visit the state during the months of July to November, when the weather is more stable. The gastronomy of the place is ideal for those who like to try new cuisine. Many of the ingredients used for food preparation are stemmed from this very forest, such as the Cupuaçu fruit and Jambu fish tips, which are a great try for visitors!

Salvador Salvador is the capital of Bahia state, in the upper northeast of Brazil. This city is full of culture, especially of the african-Brazilian civilization. The historical center of Salvador is known by its Portuguese colonial architecture with several memorial monuments of the seventeenth to the twentieth century, where Pelourinho, a famous Brazilian neighbourhood declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is located. Salvador city is divided in "Cidade Alta" and "Cidade Baixa," and to travel between these two regions it is necessary to take the “Lacerda Elevator,” which in itself is a sight to see. At Cidade Baixa it is recommended to explore the beaches of Salvador. One of more hectic beaches is the Porto da Barra beach, and those who like more quiet and relaxing beaches, such as Itapuã and Stella Maris, should stay further from the center of town. If you love big festivals and you are in town in February, look out for the Carnival celebration. Bahia’s Carnival is celebrated with electric trios (Trio elétrico), an abundance of music with great Brazilian singers and of course, lots of parties. The strongest characteristic of Bahian cuisine is the use of pepper, so there are several options of well-seasoned dishes. The most famous is especially is the “Acarajé.” Acarajé is a dish made from peeled beans formed into a ball and then deep-fried in dendê olive oil. It is served split in half and stuffed with vatapá and/or caruru, a salad made out of green and red tomatoes, fried shrimps and homemade hot pepper sauce. We recommend you go to the neighbourhood of Rio Vermelho to try acarajé prepared by Dinha and Regina. Other typical dishes are the bobó, moqueca and caruru (stewed okra). Be sure to try what the region has to offer!

BRAZILIAN FALLS The 275 falls of the Iguaçu River, creating Foz do Iguaçu, are considered one of the greatest natural wonders of the planet. Listed by Heritage, the National Park and its attractions are even more impressive in the months of December and January, when the volume of water is greater, but the entire year is good to visit the region anyway. To enjoy the landscapes that spread over an area of 186 hectares there are lookouts, scenic walkways and hiking paths. By land, the tour is done by bus to the scenic walkway 1,200 meters long, guaranteeing a breathtaking experience. There are multiple viewpoints - but first, the coatis racoon and butterflies demand equal attention with the Salto Floriano, the point in which the waters reach great flow. At the second, witness the falls from interesting angles to really experience the wonder of nature. Besides the falls, the park also is home to several species of plants and birds. They are fig trees, trumpet trees, pine trees, bromeliads and orchids, as well as toucans, macaws and parrots which ensure a bright and vibrant addition to the experience.
