Congratulations to Henry Korous! He attended the Salt Lake Valley Spell-ing Bee on March 7th and WON! We are so proud of Henry for studying so hard and actually winning the region’s competition. Some of Henry’s words: nostril, nasal, interrupt, adagio, angstrom, analysis, minaret, pistachio, anachronism, precocious, hypocrisy, mirage. THE BUZZ, VOL 4 ISSUE 8

Hello, As the cold weather sets in on us, please take note that when the temperature drops below 32 degrees, the students are able to come into the lunchroom by 7:50a.m. They are able to study or read, something quiet while keeping warm until school starts.

Additionally, as I so much enjoy learning about our families, I’m incorporating a small weekly breakfast to accommodate my objec-tive in meeting everyone. I hope to have the opportunity to meet with all families by the end of the school year. Please await your invita-tional call to breakfast.

A great quote I recently ran across: Be civil to all, sociable to many, familiar with few, friend to one, enemy to none.

Cigarette smoke contains 4,800 chemicals

-69 cause cancer, smoking causes up to

300,000 cases of bronchitis and pneumo-

nia among infants and once inhaled smoke

reaches the brain faster then drugs. Do you

have any idea which smoking-related dis-

ease is the number one cause of death

among smokers? If you're thinking it's lung

cancer or COPD/emphysema, you're

wrong. While both of these smoking-related

diseases do claim a lot of

lives, it is heart disease

that holds the top slot in

the list of diseases that kill

smokers!

The Drama Club would like to invite all students to enter the VSA Arts script writing competition. The winner receives $2,000 and a trip to Washington DC to see their play performed. Students grades 6-12 are eligible to enter. Mrs. Fagundes is over this project. Deadline is

BRING THE WORLD HOME

Share your heart, your home, Your country with a young person from abroad.

Become a Host Family! The mission of Beehive Science & Technology Academy (BSTA) is to provide an active learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds in order to enable them to develop the intellectual, linguistic, cultural, interper-sonal, and advocacy skills needed to succeed in high school, higher education, and their future career. (from Mis-sion Statement on website)

This year Beehive has four exchange students in the 11th grade.

Inez Rakhmawulan from Indonesia hosted by Saad and Sawsan Ibrahim

Kailin Gao from China hosted by JP and Victoria Bernier Widya Ramadhani from Indonesia hosted by Sami and Maysa Kergaye

Siti Abdul Hady from Malaysia hosted by Sami El-Koutli and Halimah Sallih

It is now time to plan for next year 2009-10. Won’t you open your home and share your life with a boy or girl from abroad? International exchange students arrive in August with PAX - Program of Academic Exchange on an academic home-stay program. Vicky Wason, PAX Community Coordinator is now taking applications for host families. Teens from the Italy, Germany, Thai-land, Korea, Serbia, and 30 different countries are interested in living with a Utah family and attending Beehive high school for the next academic year.

All PAX students speak English, have full medical insurance, and come with their own spending money. They also want to share the best of their culture with you! Exchanges foster understanding and love across the globe. Host families come in all shapes and sizes! All are welcome to apply including single parents, young couples and retirees. Families need only provide a place for the student to sleep and study, meals, and a warm, supportive environment. PAX Community Coordinator Vicky Wason is currently interviewing area families. She is available to meet with you to show you the profiles of arriving PAX students, so that you can choose the perfect match for your family. For more information call Vicky at (801) 908-0388 or the PAX National Office at 1 800 555-6211.

*PAX is designated an Exchange Visitor Program by the US Dept. of State.
