Dear ReadersFiestas fiestas! For our readers in the areas of Alfaz del Pi and Benidorm you will have had the fun filled with local fiestas last week and I know I’m still recovering. Fun fairs and stalls offering all sorts of goodies for the children and of course the adults; tucking into roasted chestnuts and popcorn, it has been a time for relax-ation and fun for many. With local banks and shops closing during the early part of the week as well as the children being off school, I’m sure the mums and dads will now be looking forward to some normality for the end of the week.

Of course Thursday is the big fancy dress party in Benidorm so be prepared for all the photos in next week’s issue, as we love to see the party unfold and experience the sheer volume of participants. Friday is the giant Paella in the street hosted by the Sanatra group and an after party to finish off the fiestas. Free to anyone, simply turn up and join the queue for a taste of the real traditional cuisine. It’s now only six weeks until we will be waking up to whatever Father Christmas has brought us this year, and for me I hope it’s same old favourites. As boring as it sounds, the needs must: socks and pants are a firm favourite for any man, along with a box of chocolates and a bottle of my favourite tipple. The highlight of my day is to sit down and tuck into a traditional Christmas lunch. So now is time to start shopping and to decide where you will be over the Christmas period. We will be launching our Christmas Special feature next week so keep reading to see how we can help you find the very best ideas for shopping and eating out. We’ll even have the best weekend breaks available here on the Costa Blanca.

The Weekly Buzz is open to the public in the indoor market in Benidorm at our news desk; you can come by and talk to us anytime. We have a display of business partners offering you the best products for your life here in Spain, including property rentals, insurance, money exchange and much more. For those people in the north areas, you can find us at our very new Calpe offices situated in the town centre, near to Specsavers and the dry riverbed.

Please don’t forget that If you are involved in any organisation/charity or if you can tell us about any local events, charity fundraisers or to pass on any useful local information that you may have available, simply email us at [email protected] or call me on 634 310 665.

Happy reading and have a fantastic week.Marco - Editor - Buzz Media

World diabetes day set to put vision loss into focus

On World Diabetes Day, all Specsavers Opticas stores will be offering free eye tests to raise aware-ness of the importance of regular ex-aminations in detecting non-eye relat-ed conditions such as diabetes and providing information about the link between diabetes and the eyes.

To further support the cause, Specsavers Opticas Torrevieja is collaborating with the Torrevieja Dia-betes Association for a free diabetes screening event opposite Torrevieja Casino on World Diabetes Day, Sat-urday 14th November from 10am to 2:00pm. This is open to all and totally free of charge.

During the event, qualified nurs-es will be conducting a simple finger prick test to detect the signs of dia-betes. Results will be given immedi-ately and if positive, patients will be referred for medical advice. In the af-ternoon there will be free talks about all aspects of diabetes and throughout the day Specsavers will be on hand to offer advice and support regarding diabetes and vision.

According to the World Health Or-ganization, approximately 9% of the world’s adult population has diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is an important cause of blind-ness, and occurs as a result of long-term accu-mulated damage to the small blood vessels in the ret-ina.

If early symp-

toms of diabetes are left undetected or not managed effectively, diabet-ic retinopathy can lead to blindness. One percent of global blindness can be attributed to diabetes. However, if diabetic retinopathy is detected early and treated, blindness can be pre-vented in 90% of cases.

Martin Blake store director at Specsavers Santa Ponça says: ‘Eye exams do more than just test your vi-sion. By examining the back of your eyes an optometrist can detect eye diseases such as cataracts and glau-coma. They will sometimes spot signs of other conditions, such as diabetes, and refer you to a specialist.

Sufferers of diabetes can remain undiagnosed for up to 10 years, meaning it is not unusual for people to be already suffering from compli-cations when it is first diagnosed. In fact an eye test at Specsavers can be the first indicator of the disease that directs the person to a specialist for testing.

Specsavers Opticas is located in Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja on the Cos-ta Blanca. For more information or to book an eye examination at your near-est store visit www.specsavers.es

Feminists March in Madridby CRIS WESt

Last Saturday saw a march against domestic abuse in Spain as organised by over 400 differ-ent feminist groups. According to information released by the police, there were 41 deaths in Spain from domestic abuse last year and countless more serous incidents that went unreported.

The women who joined the pro-test have said enough is enough and want to bring change to Spain. Over 300 buses brought over ten thousand women to the capital and were seen carrying banners which translated as “We aren’t all here, the dead are missing!’ to highlight the increasing numbers of violence against women. From January 2003 to this year, 779 women have been killed in Spain by their partner or ex-partner and only a handful of these actually reported issues to the police before their death.

The protest aims to highlight the problems caused by domestic abuse as well as to broaden the campaign to include sexual based violence, harassment in the workplace and the trafficking of women that still happens in Spain. A shocking recent survey of men in Spain has revealed

that a third of men have said, “wives provoke violence” and another study of young Spaniards revealed that 33% think it is “acceptable or inevi-table” that they will control their part-ners through dictating daily activities, preventing them from seeing friends and family and choosing what their partner does. 28% of the same group of Spanish people aged between 15 and 29 also said that they had expe-rienced abusive control at the hands

of a partner. These revelations have caused

many people to demand the laws in Spain to change to give the wom-en more power and financial help. Thanks to protests like this one, Spain adopted groundbreaking laws in 2004 against violence to women including a free hotline that doesn’t appear on the phone bills, as well as free legal aid and the creation of mul-tiple women’s shelters.

denia school participating in erasmus exchange

by CRIS WEStThe college of infant and primary

education (CEIP) in Denia has started taking part in the European Erasmus programme, which helps to boost cre-ativity within a multi-linguistic atmos-phere.

The school will host regular events for the students to develop their “internation-al character” and to give awareness to other cultures. The programme includes access to the eTwinning platform linking Spain to other participating countries like Italy, Croatia, Greece, Poland and the Czech Republic.

The school usually offers their teach-ings only in the dialect of Valencian with classes in Catalan, however it was all change over these special days.

For the groups Halloween celebra-tions, the project saw the young students singing spooky songs in various languag-es, crating masks for the different cul-tures and even painting a mural to their own artistic expression.

A high portion of the day was carried out in English to help teach the children additional languages. The project has been funded by the European Commis-sion and the school hopes the experience will improve the “linguistic competency” of the children and their community.

The school also expects to put on more Erasmus events over the following year, and if they are pleased with the re-sults, will add it permanently into the cur-riculum.

mystery obJects fall from space

by SPENCER WILLIAMSAround a week ago a strange object

was found lying in the Spanish country-side, which some considered might be a UFO or alien related. The object turned out to be space junk and is probably part of a rocket or satellite which had reentered Earth’s atmosphere, landing in the field. Now a second and similar object has been discovered close by. As report-ed by El Pais in English, on Sunday this

week, a second and very similar piece of space junk was discovered in the Murcia countryside a few kilometers from the first discovery. This second object is also spherical in shape and is almost identical to the first object found by the shepherds. Reportedly, the object is approximate-ly a meter in diameter and is covered in heat-resistant material.

simon patrick celebrates 10 fantastic years of

entertaining benidormAfter having celebrated their 11th anniversary last

weekend with a brilliant party, the famous Rock & Roll House in Benidorm are having another celebration on Thursday 12th November. This week will mark the 10th anniversary of Simon Patrick as the number one Elvis tribute performing exclusively at the Rock & Roll House. A full line up of acts have been booked for the anniversary party both fans and friends have been invited. Plus the af-ter party is for everyone to join in, the whole extravaganza

promises a fantastic experience.Simon has recently performed in Blackpool for over

600 fans as this was his fourth year and the gig was sold out. The venue called ‘Viva’ which was formally a bin-go hall, and now offers a sit down meal meant that Roy Chubby Brown had to be moved to another night just to allow for Simon’s concert.

Since 2004, the Rock & Roll House have celebrated their annual birthday as a large event, with fans traveling from the UK to come and see Simon as Europe’s Number 1 Elvis tribute, who has been described as the “most pop-ular act in Benidorm”.

The extensive line up offers an abundance of quality music acts that cannot be found anywhere else in Europe. Si-mon also performs a duo with Shakin’ Stevens tribute (Dean Ryan) and together the energy and sound of this duo is a truly breath-taking experience.

Simon Patrick arrived in Be-nidorm after making a decision to travel abroad with the aim to perform as an Elvis tribute act. Talking to Simon he explained, “I told my mum that I was going to give it ago abroad and that’s when I decided I was going to Benidorm.”

“I put a little money in my pocket and packed my backing tracks and costume, I turned up in Benidorm and I had no where to live to start with. My First ever show was at the Pig ‘n’ Whis-tle following a performer called Neil St John and I walked into the Rock & Roll House and told them I would perform for free for half an hour. Well I’ve never looked back, it’s all been actual-ly plain sailing.”

Simon continued, “Working for the bar’s owners could not be better, they are my friends and we complete-ly understand each other; I respect them and I don’t ever let them down and they are the same with me. I go back to the UK every third week for seven days to make sure my mum is ok, plus I have a little rest to keep my feeling fresh before returning to Spain and feeling great feeling great”.

Simon also talked to The Weekly Buzz about the Elvis Fiesta in Benidorm, which will soon be in its sixth year and now attracts thousands of visitors each year. “I am headlining again next year and its just getting bigger and better each time. We extended the show this year to the

Benidorm Palace, which was an absolute success; it was a fantastic night for the fans and the response we received was brilliant.

Simon was the winner of ‘The European Elvis Champi-onships’ in 2010 and went to the World finals in Memphis coming sixth place. Simon is recognised across the Costa Blanca and has many fans that visit him from all over Europe. Simon said “I really do love it here and I have some great friends. I love my fans and the people I meet here are having fun and enjoying themselves; that’s what Benidorm is all about.”

Benidorm is proud of hav-ing its very own King of Rock & Roll: Simon Patrick. He is the number 1 Elvis tribute and is top of the bill every night (ex-cept on Sunday’s) at the fa-mous “The Rock & Roll House” who are themselves celebrat-ing 11 years of Rockin’.

EMERgENCy REPAIRSThe heavy rains over the last few

weeks have affected several areas of Benidorm, including a staircase to the Piazza della Signoria and the Playa del Mal Pas.

This passage area is one of the busiest in the city for both locals and tourists and the council has acted ur-gently to repair the structure, which was closed for safety reasons before there was any further deterioration. Repairs also included one of the ma-sonry walls that had collapsed on to the stairs.

The workmen were under huge pressure to finish the emergency works before the start of the fiestas to ensure that there were no disrup-tions to the festivities.

The heavy rains over the last month have had a large impact on the workload in the town as many

areas have required maintenance due to burst pipes, water damage and loose masonry. Fortunately the cost of the burst pipes has not been footed by the council as the fees have been covered by Hi-

draqua. In total other planned and emergency works have tallied up a total of 26,438.50 euros.

lake boosted by recent rainfall The Las Salinas de Calpe Lake situated

by the roadside is popular with both tourists and locals, but most importantly an eclectic mix of wildlife. From various types of native fish to over 173 different types of birds in-cluding the coral pink flamingo which calls Calpe it’s home for a large portion of the year.

The lake is usually so clear that it’s mir-ror-like surface is the subject of photographs, so when the water levels dropped this year, there was room for genuine concern.

Due to the high temperatures this year causing a drought in the area added to the failures in pumping of the seawater, the levels dropped dangerously low. The town hall environmentalists reviewed the area and announced that the water lev-

els were the lowest in years, which had caused dozens of fish to perish from lack of habitable space and food sources.

Thankfully, due to the recent high rainfalls, the water levels have now re-turned to their usual levels and the wild-life is already showing signs of recovery.

The lake, which is situated in 41 hec-tares of natural land, has started to see the migration of birds as well as the usu-al mating patterns of the aquatic life.

The area is often frequented by or-nithologists who try to catch a glimpse of the spectacular variety of birds, and following the increased water levels, everyone is pleased to see that nature is returning back to how it should be.

Light work.........and light lunch

IT wasn’t quite a case of burning the candle at both ends, but 30 members of Javea U3A’s Ladies that Lunch group did do more than they are accustomed to at their latest get-togeth-er.

Although chatting over lunch is the usual prior-ity, this time the ladies crammed in a visit to a can-dle factory before sitting down to their meal.

Group leaders Sally Wells and Katrina Frost ar-ranged a tour around the Kerzenfabrik Candle Fac-tory Fabrica de Velas at Beniarbeig as a special ap-petizer for the main course.

The visitors were able to see artists at work, sculp-

turing the candle wax by both cold and heat meth-ods, and then tempt them-selves from the vast array of finished products on offer in the factory shop. They certainly came away with a better appreciation of how these craftspeople make light work of creating wax masterpieces.

Following the visit, the group made their way to Javea Old Town, where they enjoyed a typical Spanish lunch at Fuentes restaurant.

Average Property Prices in Spain Rise for First Time Since 2008

According to property appraisers TINSA, the average price of housing throughout Spain in October recorded the first annual increase in more than seven and a half years.

Their IMIE index which provides a relative measure of house prices in Spain, stood at 1,349 points, up 0.8% from October 2014. The ‘Mediterrane-an Coast’ and the ‘Balearic and Ca-nary Islands’ were the main drivers as they have increased their average price by 3.6% and 4.2%, respectively.

The index, which is calculated from the housing appraisals made by the company is collated monthly and based on the variation in the value per square metre of a property and its level compared to 2001 (base 1000).

The average price in Spain re-corded its first annual fall in March

2008 and has maintained a downward trend ever since. The decline began to slow in the second half of 2013 and in the last year, the Index has re-mained stable at between 1,320 and 1,340 points.

Despite the turning point suggest-ed in this latest figure, stabilisation has yet to be consolidated. The evo-lution of the average price in the com-ing months will depend on the general performance of the economy and un-employment levels.

While the ‘Balearic and Canary Is-lands’ recorded the best year on year increases, ‘Capitals and Major Cities’ also rose slightly, up by 0.6%. It was only metropolitan areas and smaller towns, which recorded slight declines of 0.6% and 0.2%, respectively.

honda civic type r - 2015

If you wanted to come out on top in a game of hot hatch Top Trumps - the Civ-ic Type R would be your winning card. It boasts 310PS, a top speed of 167mph, peak torque of 400Nm and a 0-62mph time of just 5.7 seconds.

Those numbers aren’t just for winning card games though – this is one of the most engaging, enjoyable and exciting cars on sale. That does come with a cave-at though - it’s far from cheap and possibly a little too hardcore for some.

Unlike old versions of the Civic Type R, the new model has a turbocharger, though Honda has still seen fit to install its VTEC variable valve timing system. The result is, frankly, a bit mad. The 0-62mph sprint figure doesn’t really do the Type R’s performance justice - on the road it picks up speed like a genuine sports car, rather than a beefed up family hatch.

It’s seriously exciting to drive. The steering is precise, sharp and well-weight-ed, the gear change is sat-isfyingly slick and there is a huge amount of front end grip. That is thanks, in part, to a mechanical limited-slip differential that does its very best to keep the car pointed the right way when accelerating out of bends.

The suspension is very firm though. In fact the whole driving experience feels extreme - the Type R is tough and uncompromis-ing. The seats have hard

bolsters that are great for holding you in place, but aren’t great for three hours on the motorway, while the clutch is heavy in traffic and the engine is loud.

The bodywork is hardly subtle either which will be either very appealing or massively off-putting. Still, under all those muscular plastic addenda there is a Civic, so there’s a big, usefully shaped boot and two wide-opening rear doors. The back seats are good for adults and it’s easy to fold them down to free up a bit more load space.

Officially the 2.0-litre petrol engine in Civic Type R is capable of 38.7mpg, with emissions of 170g/km. For most, those figures probably don’t matter compared to excitement and performance. A Volkswa-gen Golf R is similarly priced and easier to live with plus there’s the Ford Focus RS, but for those who want a genuinely thrill-ing, exciting hot hatch, the Civic Type R is fantastic.

Food & DrinkFood & Drink

Navi & Jasmine welcome you to enjoy the best authentic Indian cuisine in Benidorm as independently voted by visitors and locals alike for the last 10 years.

Situated in Calle Gerona at the Old Town end, this street has now become known as “the food street” and is one of the most pop-ular places to visit for dining out in the centre of Benidorm. Having the benefit of being a closed road to traffic, the restaurants are able to place tables outside of their premises mak-ing it a perfect location for alfresco dining most of the year.

Indian food is certainly one of my fa-vorites and for me the whole experience of eating Indian food is actually having the meal in a restaurant that offers the ambi-ance and authentic hospitality offered by the Indian culture. The amazing aromas coming from the busy kitchen combined with the stylish tableware that is used for serving the food, India Gate have made every effort to be original and inventive with their serving methods and creativity of their menu.

The poppadoms are served with a selection of dips that demonstrate the quality and perfec-tion of the food on offer in this amazing restaurant. Spicy Onion, tangy sweet Mango Chutney, Minty Yogurt and traditional Lime Pickle will certainly get your taste buds buzzing. I normally choose a curry with a sauce and have my favorites such as a Madras or Pathia, both of these are fairly hot and spicy.

This time I had a change of mind because I had seen a number of customers eating grills. The sizzling and steaming hot grill plates were being delivered from the kitchen and the amazing smells just got the better of me. So my choice was to have a Tandoori Mixed Grill with a side dish of Spinach and Cheese (Sagg Paneer), one of Tarka Dal (lentils) and of course a Naan Bread!

My colleagues ordered a Cheesy Chicken and a Chick-en Tikka Masala both served with rice. When our food was

served, the large sizzling grill was placed next to me and had an outstanding quantity of food consisting of Chick-en, Lamb, King Prawn and Salmon Tikka together with onions and peppers, the Tarka dal and Spinach with Cheese dishes were perfect accompaniments and I really did enjoy my meal.

Both of my guests had amazing curries served in styl-ish individual pots that have a burner within the base that keeps the food simmering away. India Gate is always busy and it is very rare to see empty tables. Although I recommend you make a reservation, you can normally get seated if you just turn up.

The wealth of experience of the Indian chef and his kitchen team are the reasons that this restaurant needs very little help from me recommending the authentic In-dian food as it is common knowledge that the cuisine is the best you can get and people travel from all over the region to dine here.

The VISTA CARD allows a 10% discount off of the bill so when you visit India Gate tell Navi or his staff that you have read the food review in the Buzz and would like to use the VISTA CARD offer, you can also collect you card on arrival.

Nearly 40 years after his death, Elvis Presley is at the top of the British album charts with his twelfth No. 1 album in the U.K. If I Can Dream, a collection of Elvis’ classics featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Elvis Presley has broken the record for the most U.K. No. 1 albums by a male solo artist by Nov. 6, according to Billboard. This puts him on the same level as Madonna and puts him in second place for the most chart-topping LPs (behind the Beatles), the Official Charts Com-pany said Friday.

On the album, Duane Eddy added his unique guitar sound to An American Trilogy and Bridge Over Troubled Water. And Italian operatic pop trio Il Volo helps out with the vocals on It’s Now or Never.

Elvis grabbed the top spot with a whop-ping 79,000 chart sales, the company added. This is the second-fastest selling album of the year just behind Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ Chasing Yesterday. This success extends his span of No. 1 titles to 59 years, since Rock ‘n’ Roll became a chart topper in November of 1956.

Elvis’ former wife Priscilla said that the al-bum was one “that Elvis always really wanted to do.” She added that “he would have been so pleased to know his fans are still there and they continue to love his music. The most talented team put this album together and helped us all realized an unfulfilled dream.”

Rob Stewart fell in second with his 34th Top

10 album Another Country. And Elbow front-man Guy Garvey was third with his very first solo release Courting The Squall.

Ed Sheeran’s X moved down to No. 4, which was another No. 1, and Jess Glynne’s I Cry When I Laugh landed the No. 5 spot. James Morrison returned to the top 10 at No. 7 with Higher Than Here and former Britain’s Got Talent finalists Jack Pack came in at No. 8. Andy Bell and Vince Clarke took the No. 9 spot.

Adele took the top spot on the singles charts for the second week in a row with Hello. This has been Britain’s fast-est-selling record of 2015 and keep-ing Justin Bieber’s Sorry from snatch-ing the spot.

Sam Smith’s Writing’s On The Wall, the new James Bond theme for Spectre, climbed back up the charts to No. 3.

John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and R2-D2 and C-3PO (complete with red arm) each have their own cover.

Also worth noting is Boye-ga’s character Finn is in full Stormtrooper gear and looks bril-liant.

The mags will reportedly re-veal some new details regarding spe-cific characters.

ELVIS ALBUM HITS UK NUMBER 1

Busted are back and they’re record-ing new music as well as embarking on their first UK arena tour in 12 years.

The Brit-winning boy band collec-tively broke hearts of fans around the country when they split up in 2005, but now James, Matt, and Charlie are all officially getting back together.

Guitarist Charlie Simpson, who previously vowed never to return to the band, and was the only absentee when supergroup McBusted formed last year, said at a press announcement: “I’ve lost count of the amount of times I said I’d never do this again, and I genuinely meant that.

“But I’ve changed my mind. It’s been a weird journey but a natural one. It’s nice that we’ve been able to recon-nect as friends again, and that’s the reason.”

Their first performance as a trio will be at Wembley Arena on May 11 next year, where they previously played 12 sold-out shows, and will see them play all their greatest hits – from Air Hostess to Crashed The Wedding to Year 3000.

Matt Willis said: “For me, there’s a huge sense of unfinished business… I always thought in my heart we’d do Busted again, but that it was just a matter of when and how.”

PISCES

SCORPIO (Oct 24th-nov 22nd)

Relationships, partnerships and friendships are all interesting and important, with professional unions especially well starred. Money is coming your way from an unexpected source, but take it, thank them and use it wisely to further your journey.

SAGIttARIUS (nov 23rd-Dec 21st)

The only way you’ll feel more satisfied with current situations is if you instigate discussions and get everyone on the same page. You’re positive and optimistic and others have faith in your enthusiasm. You’re great at lifting people’s spirits too.

CAPRICORn (Dec 22nd-Jan 20th)

You’re not at your social best this week and quite simply can’t be bothered making the effort to go out anywhere. We all have times like this on occasion so stop worrying. You’re happy to be in the company of people you know and love though.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st-Feb 19th)

The planetary influences all point to finance and security matters in one way or another, so don’t leave any loose ends where this is concerned. You’ve become very original in your social life. Expand it even more by bringing in new faces.

PISCES (Feb 20th-March 20th)

You’re making it so easy for others to misunderstand what you’re saying and doing as you’re not taking time to ensure they know what you mean. Don’t let crossed lines or confusion over communications spoil this week. Focus.

tAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

Ready or not, love and passion are coming back into your life, and they’re coming in great rolling waves, so if you think you’ll manage to ignore it or walk around it, you’ve got another thought coming. Give into your carnal desires. It’s normal.

GEMInI (May 22nd-June 21st)

You can make a massive impact on the world this week, but you need to do so for the right reasons, and in the right way. Taking shortcuts or getting involved in underhand dealings will come back and bite you, so be careful. Come on, play fair.

CAnCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

You’ve come to realise over recent weeks and months that the things in life which truly give you the most pleasure cannot be measured by how much they cost. Love, respect and genuine affection are worth a million times more than anything.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Minor challenges over domestic issues cannot be avoided, but instead of diving head first into a full on war, take a more mature approach and try talking about how things have come to this. I’m sure the other parties would prefer this approach.

VIRGO (August 24th-Sept 23rd)

You seem to be under the spotlight across the board of your life, so lap it up at work as there’s nothing you like better than being applauded for your talent professionally, and bask in the emotional satiety in your personal life when you feel the love.

LIBRA (Sept 24th-Oct 23rd)

Personal relationships reach a new high and move to the next level of intimacy, leaving you with a smile on your face and renewed hope for the future. You won’t be backward at coming forward when you tell the one you love exactly how you feel.

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Although you’re impatient to get things done, you can’t actually decide what you want to focus on first, and your indecision is driving everyone around you mad. Go old school. Make a list and tick things off as you’ve completed them.

Health & FamilyWhat is a

bartholin’s Cyst? The Bartholin’s glands are found just behind

and either side of the inner lips that surround the entrance to the vagina.

They are usually not noticeable because they are normally only pea sized. Their job is to secrete fluid that acts as a lubricant during sex. The fluid travels down tiny tubes, called ducts, into the va-gina. If the ducts become blocked, they will fill with fluid and expand. This then becomes a Bartholin’s cyst. The onset of a cyst is very rapid, over a matter of days or even hours.

The condition is most common in sexually active women in their 20´s and 30´s and affects approxi-mately 2% of women. As the Bartholin’s glands do not start functioning until puberty, Bartholin’s cysts do not usually affect chil-dren.

Often these cysts stay small and do not cause any adverse symptoms. However, in some cases the cyst can become in-fected, which can cause a painful collection of pus (an abscess) in the Bartholin’s gland.

All new lumps and bumps should be seen by your family doctor to determine exactly what they are and for appropriate treatment. If your doctor says that that a swelling is harmless and it is not causing you any discomfort, you may be advised to ‘wait and see’ but return to your GP if you have a cyst that becomes large or painful, or is uncomfort-able when you sit or walk.

A Bartholin’s cyst or abscess is common. Treat-

ment of a Bartholin’s cyst depends on the size of the cyst, how painful the cyst is and whether the cyst is infected.

Several treatments are available to treat any pain or infection and, if necessary, the cyst will be drained. Most treatments involve a minor surgi-cal procedure. Unfortunately Bartholin’s cysts are known to come back in up to 38% of women.

S o m e t i m e s home treatment is all you need. In other cases, surgical drainage of the Bartholin’s cyst is necessary. If an infection oc-curs, antibiotics may be helpful to treat the infected Bartholin’s cyst.

reatment op-tions your doctor may recommend include:

Sitz baths. Soaking in a tub filled with a few inch-es of warm water (sitz bath) several times a day for three or four days may help a small, infected cyst to rupture and drain on its own.

Surgical drainage. ...Antibiotics. ...Marsupialization.NB: if they present after the age of 40 a malignant cause must be excluded.

SSwine flu, bird flu, stomach flu. We’re surrounded

by viruses every time we leave the house. We expect it at the playground, at the office, at the mall — but in our own homes? Sure, you can catch illnesses from your family members — but what about your pets?

“People can certainly catch illnesses from their dog or cat, though some are more common than others,” says Susan Wright, BVSc (Hons), a staff veterinarian at Dog Fence DIY LLC in Dallas.

There are a variety of ways pet illnesses are trans-mitted, depending on the ailment. Some, such as the roundworm parasite, are spread through touching feces of infected dogs and cats, usually found in soil, followed by improper (or lack of) hand washing. The hookworm parasite can also be ingested in a similar manner, though it is more commonly contracted when larvae in infected dirt penetrate your bare skin. Toxoplasmosis, which is es-

pecially dangerous to pregnant women and can lead to birth defects, can be caught by touching the feces of an infected animal as well and by handling raw meat without proper hand washing afterwards.

Other cat and dog illnesses can be transmitted be-tween animals and people through contact with an infect-ed animal’s skin and fur. One example is ringworm, which is actually a fungal skin infection and not a worm. Another pet illness is the highly contagious mite, Sarcoptes sca-bei, which can affect dogs, cats, and people, resulting in hair loss and/or skin rash.

Other ailments infect both animals and people, but are spread by a third source rather than directly from dog to human. Lyme disease is one example — infected ticks can bite and infect an animal and be carried indoors on a pet, only to crawl off them and onto a person’s skin and bite them. Heartworm is another. Relatively common in dogs and cats though not as frequent in humans, heart-worm is spread from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Finally, some illnesses can be transmitted when an animal injures a person, although these are very rare. One example is rabies. Most often transmitted by the bite of an infected wild animal, rabies can also be spread when a pet that has the illness bites. Without immediate treatment, death may result, and vaccination against ra-bies is extremely important for pets.

Another is cat scratch disease, caused by bacte-ria known as Bartonella. “People develop fever, joint pain, lethargy, and headaches some weeks after being

scratched,” says Dr. Wright. Bacteria, most commonly Pasteurella, which causes fever and illness, can also be spread from an animal bite.

Birds, meanwhile, can transmit Chlamydia psittaci, or psittacosis, when people inhale aviary dust or droppings, as well as pasteurellosis, mycobacteriosis, and others. There are also a variety of rodent diseases that people can get including leptospirosis and hantavirus — though they are typically spread through wild rodents.

Can your Pet get you Sick?

BANKIA TRIPLES CLASSIC WINNERSA truly fantastic competition played in

glorious sunshine with 96 bowlers from dif-ferent clubs on the Costa Blanca taking part in this 10th anniversary of the annual spon-sored “Bankia Triples Classic” displaying a feast of excellent bowling, with one point between the winners and second and third, and a shot difference of 4 between 2nd & 3rd.

The winning team were Malcolm Sprawson, Linda & Mike Smith (pictured above) and in second place Harry & Gail Chick with John Coates, and in third place Rod Warnes, Chris Evans & Clive English.

We wish to thank all the bowlers from the different clubs for making this competi-tion making it the success it was.

Benitachell Bowls Club Winter League.

We’re faced with two games this week due to being rained off last week. Tues-day was a home game against Vistabella. One draw and a loss completed the game and the higher shot difference gave BBC 7 points. The Berleen League team once again performed brilliantly, Mike Smith skip-ping his team of Derek Mawson, Steve Grif-fith and Linda Smith to a 24-8 win.

Wednesday saw the “Winter Leaque” away to “San Louis Belugas”

Maggie Lawley, Jacquie Roberts, Mary Cockell and Tim Woodcock took 5 shots on the first end of their game and although the opposition fought back they ended up wor-thy winners 21-15.

Alex Fisher, Terry Corner, Vivian Erridge and Bert McLean (BBC Winter

League Captain) secured another 2 points by achieving a terrific score 28-8. Dudley Davis and his team, Clive Langan, Carol Davis, and John Avey also dominated their game and won 28-9. A draw and a loss of 2 shots on the last 2 rinks resulted in a 43 shot difference and an excellent victory away from home with a 9-3 victory.

With the Tartan Bar & the “Ryan ex-press” flying along nicely in the Benidorm pool league, it was down to Bobby’s Bar to try & inflict a first loss of the season on the leaders. It all started well for Bobby’s Bar as they raced into a 3-0 lead and most notably, the “Ryan express” Ryan Robinson had lost his 100% win record in the process. It was the “sledgehammer” Stuart Riggans who started the Tartan revival with a win in the fourth singles match, he followed that with a win in the doubles match alongside partner Iain Carmichael. Ryan Robinson & Ivan Ewart brought the match level with the second doubles match going the Tartan Bar’s way.

In the last four singles matches, the draw brought Lenny Smith, the man who stopped the Ryan express, up against the same player in the back four singles & Ryan had a point to prove. Trailing 4-3 after Barry Cole had beaten Anton McInnes, Ryan left his opponent with no chance & 7-balls to look at with a great clearance that maybe left Lenny wonder-ing how he had beaten the same man, just a few games earlier. The final two singles were shared with Iain Carmichael ensuring a draw for the Tartan Bar with some good shooting in the final frame with the match ending 5-5.

Serena’s Bar bounced back after last

week’s 8-2 loss & dished out their own drubbing, beating the Rockstar 8-2. Dan-ny Farnham, Andrew Sizer & Gary Maskil picked up maximum points for the home team but Lisa Layden, last year’s league MVP has yet to get going this season with only 2 wins from 8 so far but is still optimistic of turning things around.

The Grill House beat the Stretford Jukebox 8-2 to record their first win of the season, the defending champions have struggled in recent weeks but this win will surely boost their confidence.

In the other two matches it was a battle between A & B’s with the Yorkshire Pride B team winning over their A team. Neil Jones & Ash Randell took the last two singles matches to ensure the B team have the bragging rights with a 6-4 victory.

It was the same score line in the other A verses B match, this time it was at the London Bar where the A team won 6-4. Another fine performance from Tom King in the A team as he moves up into second spot on the individual rankings with 7 wins from 8.

All matches start at 9pm every Thurs-day, why not come along and join in the fun.

All fixtures and results can be found at www.x-patspoolleagues.com or visit our face-book page, X-Pats Pool Leagues.

f the Spanish side of the past few years hasn’t been frighteningly good enough for you, imagine them with Lionel Messi.

Well, if Vicente del Bosque and the Spanish FA had had their way, that might well have been a reality.

The Argentine moved to Catalonia to join Barcelona aged 13 and has gone on to win a hatful of personal and team accolades.

But Del Bosque admitted in an interview with the Guardian’s Sid Lowe that e f -forts were made to nationalise the four-time Ballon d’Or win-ner:

There was an attempt to do so [nationalise Messi] but he decid-ed to stick with the country of his birth; he remained steadfast.

That’s a phenom-enon that we cannot t u r n our back on or pretend doesn’t exist. We don’t know w h e r e the next Messi or the next Ronaldo is go- ing to come from: it could be one of those who ar- rives here from another coun- try looking to make a better life.

Not just a bump in the road: Ruud Gul-lit feels Chelsea Football Club are the ‘Tiger Woods of football’, as their aura

“I love to travel and see the world and

I am excited to not only play in the event but also check out Abu Dha-bi for the first time.”

LANCASTER STEPS DOWN

Stuart Lancaster has left his post as England coach following the team’s early exit from the World Cup.

England became the first host nation to be eliminated at the group stage when they lost matches to Wales and Australia in Pool A.

It was the first time an England side had failed to reach the knockout stages in their eight

World Cup campaigns.Lancaster, 46, was made permanent coach

in 2012 and won 28 of his 46 games, but failed to win the Six Nations.

Lancaster released a statement through the RFU which said: “I am obviously extremely saddened to finish the way we did in this World Cup and to step down from the role.
