Brought to you by:

As I travel across Canada and talk to manufacturers and exporters from coast to coast, I have the pleasure of meeting many amazing people who are running very innovative companies.

It’s their desire to succeed, take on the world and make a difference that makes me proud to lead Canada’s largest trade and industry association.

Canada is a very diverse and geographically large country that spans from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It’s our job as the advocate of all manufacturers and exporters to shorten that colossal distance, to connect Canadian companies to one another and open up a new world of business opportunities.

That’s not just our value proposition; it’s my mandate.

Like the companies we represent, CME focuses on the demands and needs of you, our members and customers. We are continually striving to link you to programs, services and business opportunities to help you succeed at home and around the globe.

That’s why we’ve developed customized member savings offerings in our Industry Benefits Program (IBP), our new export concierge service and our exclusive Enterprise Canada Network (ECN).

New opportunities. Delivering value and a positive return on investment. That’s the CME promise.

And that’s why I’m pleased to introduce CME’s inaugural BUY Suppliers, Services & Product Guide. We want to connect you to companies that can provide you with new opportunities as well as help you save and make money.

I want to thank all of those who participated in this year’s introductory guide and I ask others to join us next year, as we grow, together.

Together we can make a difference.

Sincerely,

Jay Myers President & CEO Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters

About Buy

Buy — Suppliers, Services and Products Guide 2014 is published by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters’ 20/20 magazine. It provides Canadian businesses with directory information of Canada’s top companies and suppliers in the manufacturing and exporting industries.

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is Canada’s largest industry and trade association. We represent businesses in all sectors of manufacturing and exporting activity across Canada. Our mandate is to promote the competitiveness of Canadian manufacturers and the success of Canada’s goods and services exporters in markets around the world. We focus on the issues that are most critical to our members — manufacturing competitiveness, US business opportunities, international markets, people and skills as well as energy and the environment. Their challenges are our priorities. CME represents Canada’s leading global enterprises and more than 85 per cent of our members are small and medium-sized enterprises. Together, CME’s membership accounts for an estimated 82 per cent of total manufacturing production and 90 per cent of Canada’s exports. 20/20 is published six times a year, by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters.

helping you save money, make money and connect to business opportunities is CME’s business mantra and it’s why we have developed this inaugural version of BuY, Canada’s newest buyer-seller guide.

In the following pages, you will read listings from many of Canada’s manufacturers and exporters as well as the top suppliers to the $700-billion industry. using CME’s vital network, we want to connect you to potential new suppliers and/or customers to help improve your bottom line.

But the question remains, why do it old-school, in a printed or hard copy when the trend is for more and more digital publications where you can go online and find a supplier with the click of a mouse?

Call us old-fashioned, but we like to buck the current high-tech trends complete with bits and bytes. So we went retro, back to something tangible, physically appealing, that you can hold in your hands and touch.

however, you may be reading this digitally, using our iOS or Android app — we can’t ignore the tech trends altogether.

for us, it’s about meeting our readers’ demands; giving you the choice to consume your information the way you want. for us, it’s never an issue of either/or.

And this BuY Guide is about giving you an important choice — to seek out new partners.

Today, partnerships are critical to any business success as it’s crucial to expand your networks.

The days of cold calling and e-mail phishing are long gone. You need to be innovative and creative to expand your network; you need to work through your partners’ partners… And so on…

Add that principle to Save. Make. Connect. and you have the foundation of CME’s Industry Benefits Program (IBP) where we bring Canada’s best service providers under one umbrella to provide manufacturers and exporters both value-add and cost-saving services and products to make you profitable.

from discounts on forklifts to group benefit and health insurance plans, we have more than 25 service providers that offer a potential total savings of $60,000 per year.

If you want to learn more about our IBP program, please visit www.industrybenefits.ca and start saving.

Enjoy this inaugural issue of BUY and come grow with us as we make plans to make the 2015 issue bigger and better.

MATERIAL hANdLING SYSTEMS

A refresher on selecting the model and financial arrangement that’s right for you

Purchasing a forklift for the first time or simply replacing one? The absolutely crucial first step in the process is to have a site survey done. “Even if you’re sure of your options and just want to replace what you’re using,

have a reputable dealer do a site assessment,” says Jim Chesla, vice president of businesses and product development at Stärke Material Handling Group in Niagara, ON. “It’s a chance to double-check, evaluate and consider new technology that may do a great deal to maximize efficiency and safety while minimizing costs.”

Site survey results can be very surprising. “You may be able to reduce the number of forklifts you have, or employ an attachment that can accomplish several tasks that are currently being done manually,” says Chesla. “Changing tire type can boost air quality as well as safety, depending on the surfaces involved and substances that could potentially spill indoors or out.”

A site assessment will also verify that load and height measurements are accurate. Forklift capacities are all based on a 24-inch load centre, Chesla explains, and if loads extend out beyond that point, capacity decreases. “We need to know maximum weight, maximum height, heaviest load at top height, and things like ensuring that the lift can enter racking and clear all overhead and aisle widths,” he says. “It’s like plumbing. We know the available ‘fittings’ of the forklift, and we need to know the workings within your facility so that they can be matched properly. We look at ramps, floor types, usage, obstructions, safety, everything.”

Power source choice depends on the applications. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Diesel and gas-powered forklifts offer variable power and more torque. Today’s AC Electric forklifts have to be charged in their charging bay, but are obviously emissions-free and offer the lowest overall operating costs, with fewer moving parts and less overall maintenance.

Forklift types available these days include highly-manoeuvrable three-wheeled models, reach trucks (electric, narrow-aisle forklifts) and order-pickers (also called stock-pickers or man-up forklifts, which allow the operator to move on an elevating platform to select loads). Turret forklifts fit in very narrow aisles and employ a rotating mast, and stand-up counter balance electric forklifts are best-suited for quick loading and mount-dismount.

Chesla believes the aspect of forklifts where quality matters is the power train. “It’s really everything,” he says. “That’s where the big brand names engines such as GM, Nissan, Yanmar, Cummins and Perkins tend to be more trusted, and a well-backed warranty policy is a very important sign of quality.”

After you have made your decision, have a detailed discussion with your dealer about whether to lease or purchase. Chesla points out that purchasing can save working capital and makes a forklift much more affordable. “About 35 per cent of our business is leasing to manufacturers,” he says. “Leases can also be seasonal, and there are very creative ways to tailor the lease to the customer.” Guaranteed maintenance plans are included with leases, but can also be set up with a purchased or leased forklift.

Also go over after-sale costs related to operation and maintenance such as fuel surcharges, environmental waste oil and filter disposal charges, operator training costs, possible technician maintenance training and more.

“And after the purchase, as you do with all assets, track operation and maintenance costs,” Chesla says. “A detailed and logical purchasing process with a reputable dealer will mean safety and efficiency are optimized and every forklift dollar gets put to good use.”

Fruitland Manufacturing knows vacuum pumps; particularly heavy-duty industrial vacuum pumps used in the oil & gas, environmental and septic and industrial and grease sectors. Since 1957, this family-run firm in Stoney

Creek, ON has been building a full range of rugged vacuum pumps that can move everything from water, oil and grease to soil, gravel and even rocks. “It’s all a matter of how large the intake hose is, how big the storage tank is, and how much power the vacuum pumps can deliver to do the job,” says Chris White, Fruitland Manufacturing’s vice president and general manager.

In designing, building, selling and servicing vacuum pumps all these years, Fruitland Manufacturing has amassed a wealth of useful information that any potential pump-buyer should know.

The most useful tip: “Vacuum pumps do not move anything besides air,” White says. “They evacuate the air out of the storage tank, bringing it down to zero atmosphere, so that the hose can intake whatever fluid and/or substances you are trying to move.”

This is why a powerful vacuum pump can move rocks. It creates a sufficiently large vacuum inside a large storage tank that the volume of air required to bring it back to normal outside pressure is literally massive. The bigger the inrush of compensating air, the more powerful the suction via the hose; enough to move boulders if necessary.

This brings us to our second pump-buying tip: “Buy the right vacuum pump for the application, which means that you must first know all details of that application inside out,” White says. “If you are removing grease from restaurants or clearing septic tanks and drains, you want to buy the actual power you need to do the job; compensating for factors such as ‘head’ (the vertical distance from the hose intake opening to the pump, which consumes energy due to fighting against the force of gravity), for instance.”

Other factors to be considered include the suction speed of the pump — how much materials can be moved per minute — and the storage capacity of the holding tank. A vacuum pump that cannot maintain sufficient negative pressure in the tank, or a too-small tank that needs to be emptied too frequently, are poor choices.

A third factor is a pump’s environmental impact because these pumps are lubricated and leaks can happen. “We are coming out with pumps that are lubricated using biodegradable oils,” says White. “Should their lubricants spill on the ground, just mop the excess and leave the residue. It won’t cause any harm.” In the oil & gas sector, where spills are a constant concern, having one less potential spill source to deal with is really good news.

Pump selection pointer #4: Choose a supplier who trains your people to use the pumps properly, including your drivers. “Proper usage of vacuum pumps, including the right operating pressures, is critical to keeping them running trouble-free for years,” White says. “This is why Fruitland offers an extensive training program for our customers’ employees.”

The bottom line: Choose your pumps and pump suppliers wisely, and your pumps will keep working for you reliably, day in and day out.

or forces required to hold parts to be machined as fast and accurately as possible,” Jesso says. “Typically these machines are purchased by the end user without hydraulic or fixture integration. This is where we come in, working with the machine tool supplier, the customer and the fixture designer/builder to make hydraulic integration a successful exercise.”

When it comes to fulfilling such customer needs, Hydraulic Power frequently faces a dilemma that others in the integration business will knowingly smile and nod at. “Our biggest obstacle is we are given little information at the outset of a project,” says Jesso. “There is usually a short timing window we have to work with, due to being last on the list of priorities.”

With many years experience in integration projects, the engineers at Hydraulic Power noticed a common requirement kept cropping up. Specifically, “we needed a universal, flexible Hydraulic Power unit that would enable us to make changes to flow, pressure and energy consumption in a timely manner,” Jesso says.

Hydraulic Power’s experts soon devised and built the solution to meet this recurring need. It is a modular 1½ horsepower hydraulic power unit with VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) controls, engineered and built and installed in Canada by Canadians.

“These ‘ECOPAC’ VFD units are soft-start, can ramp up and down as needed, can increase or decrease operating pressures, and will turn off after clamp pressure is reached,” says Jesso. To save power, the hydraulic power units stay off during the machining cycle, and turn on only when clamping or unclamping is required, then turn off again during the material load/unload cycle.

Besides being safe and precise, Hydraulic Power’s 1½ horsepower. VFD hydraulic power units are power misers. “This technology offers 80 to 90 per cent energy savings over systems now on the market,” Jesso says. “We can achieve well over 100 per cent savings in many applications now using three horsepower motors running 24/7 — and we can retrofit this technology to existing energy guzzling units popular in use today.”

For CME members looking to compete more aggressively in the world market, Hydraulic Power’s 1½ horsepower. ECOPAC hydraulic power units could be the cost-saver that makes the difference.

“Energy saved goes straight to a company’s bottom line, making Canadian companies more competitive on the world stage,” says Jesso. “We can literaly make your machining and manufacturing processes cost less on an ongoing basis, without sacrificing one iota of quality or productivity.”

The CME membership difference$2,400 investment translates into $500,000 rOI

BY TREENA HEIN

When the benefits of becoming a member of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters became clear, steelworks Design, immediately signed on the dotted line

Before we get into why the company owners thought CME membership was a wise investment decision

and the enormous difference it’s made, let’s take a little journey through history with Steelworks Design.

The firm opened its doors near Peterborough, ON in 2002 through the vision and dedication of Don Barnet. At that point, Don had a decade of experi-ence in large automotive plants under his belt, giving him invaluable insights into how to best provide sound engineering solutions within a manufacturing setting.

Steelworks Design has grown steadily from its beginnings 13 years ago into a world leader in supporting manufactur-ers at home and abroad to achieve truly world-class innovation.

“Today we build custom tooling and automation for companies like GE, Rolls Royce, Honda and General Motors, and we also develop creative new products and processes for other companies around the world,” says Vice President of Finance, Rhonda Barnet.

“We combine imaginative thinking and a wealth of hands-on manufacturing experience in creating robust, maintain-able designs that give our customers a measurable competitive edge.”

Other services offered by the com-pany include engineering analysis and certification, fabrication of equipment and components and design/build of produc-tion automation and custom lifting devices. The company now employs 22 people.

A national event in Alberta introduced Steelworks Design to CME in 2012.

“We were at several events out west designed to connect Ontario busi-nesses with those in Alberta,” Rhonda explains. “The SMART program was being promoted and there was a Buyer/Seller Forum. I first learned about CME there.” When she returned home and looked into CME, Barnet was sold. “I found out what was under the hood, and realized it was a giant toolbox with which to grow my business,” she says. “I also joined CME because I believed that they would help me understand and protect my SR&ED credits, and that I would get to network with other manufacturers across Canada.”

Barnet says CME staff were very helpful and proactive at getting her information on membership. It only took a few days to get all of the necessary information to become a full member, she remembers, and to get registered on the website with full access to all programs and events.

Now, about 20 months into CME membership, Barnet says joining CME has been everything she has hoped.

“For a $2,400 annual fee, I would say that being a CME member has had a $500,000 annual impact on my business,” she explains. “It has helped us with export sales and finding new international customers.”

Barnet recently travelled to the Netherlands with the Prime Minister on the first Canada-EU Trade Mission, and Steelworks is currently working on one of the valuable connections made during that trip to support a company in the wa-ter sector. In addition, Steelworks Design

is now taking part in Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), which brings together business support organizations from more than 50 countries to help European businesses succeed. Steelworks has already had one expression of interest through EEN.

CME membership also means that Barnet’s voice is heard on important government policy issues such as the SR&ED program.

“This program is critical to my business, and CME keeps me up-to-date on the many changes and helps me voice my concerns around the administration of the program,” she says. Barnet feels that CME policy advisors are working with SMEs to make sure their concerns are understood and put forward in important policy negotiations with government.

She adds, “I have also had the benefit of working with CME policy staff to defend a recent audit with 100 per cent success.”

Networking with companies coast to coast is another benefit of CME member-ship for Steelworks Design, one that Barnet calls “vital” to the company’s growth.

“In the relatively short period of time I’ve been a CME member, I have

acquired three new customers through CME connections,” she says. “CME took time to understand my business and services and made relevant introduc-tions to potential customers. I had only to go through the door and present my capabilities (the easy part). The hardest part in growing a small business is to have the opportunity to present your ca-pabilities to the decision-makers of that organization. CME has helped me do this on a number of occasions.” Some of these presentations have led to success-ful bids, she explains, while others are still in the relationship building-stage.

Belonging to CME has also saved Steelworks Design considerable amounts through the Industry Benefits Program (IBP). By using it, the company is saving more than $2,000 a year in travel and office supplies. New savings op-portunities are being added to the IBP all the time.

“Once a company realizes all the benefits CME can offer, joining becomes a no-brainer,” Barnet says. “The impact is truly far more than the value of admission. If my company had not joined CME, we would just be another small company bumping along. Now my company is set to grow into a $5–6-million-dollar company in the next few years.”

“I could have never grown my business so quickly without the support of CME.”

Barnet recently travelled to the Netherlands with the Prime Minister on the first Canada-EU Trade Mission

As a result of becoming a CME member, Steelworks Design’s Rhonda Barnet travelled on an EU trade mission with Prime Minister Stephen Harper
