As the weather gets warmer it is important to encourage children to engage in physical activity and outdoor play. Children need 60 minutes of heart pumping activity each day to be healthy. This activity helps children to improve their fitness, grow strong, maintain a healthy body weight and do better in school. Reducing the amount of screen time (TV, computers, Nintendo DS and iPods/iPads, phones, etc.) will give children enough time to play outside. From May 22 to June 1, Buttonville students will be participating in EQAO. Please note that students do not need to study for the test; they are simply asked to demonstrate what they already know. Many parents ask how they can support their child in writing the test. The best way to help your child is by supporting his or her success at school throughout the year! A Message from School Council Cont...

This year spring concert will be Thursday, May 3. As always, we will be selling tickets for your chance for front row seats on the big blue comfy couch! We also will start sales for our annual BBQ baskets. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. Our next big event planned during the month of May is our annual Grandparents’ Tea which will be Friday May 18th at 11 am in the school’s gymnasium. We have invited all grandparents to come into the school and join us for some tea & light refreshments while listening to a quick concert given by our students. Afterwards, all grandparents will be invited to visit their grandchild's classroom to meet their teacher. They are also welcome to stop by our Book Fair in the Library.

Finally don’t forget to mark your calendars for our end of the year school BBQ on Thursday May 31st!! We would like to thank everyone for your very generous donations towards our classroom baskets that will be raffled off the night of our BBQ. The baskets have been wrapped and are on display in front of the school office. It’s not too late to donate. If any parent owns their own business or has any connections and would like to give any product, service or gift certificate towards our annual event, we would greatly appreciate it. Please contact the office. An order form will be coming home shortly to purchase food & activity bracelets for that night. We look forward to seeing everyone there!!

Our next school council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday June 20th, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. in the

    library. All are welcome.

    Sincerely,

    Neely Noticewala and Imma Petrou

    Curriculum Corner

Games and puzzles provide students with an opportunity to learn math. Through games you can introduce your chil-dren to the language that mathematicians use. Here are some fun games to try at home with your children.

    THE BROKEN CALCULATOR GAME

Ask your child to pretend that the number 8 key on the calculator is broken. Ask how he or she can make the num-ber 18 appear on the screen without the 8 key. (Sample answers include 20 – 2 and 15 + 3).

Ask other questions of the same type by using different “broken” keys. Make this task easier or more challenging by varying the number your child must show on the calculator.

THE OFTEN , SOMETIMES OR NEVER GAME

Have your child draw pictures of or talk about things your family does always, often and sometimes and some things your family never does. Ask your child what other everyday events he or she could talk about by using this kind of language.

Try this game during a car ride. Call out events and have your child decide whether it is something that is likely, is not likely or will never happen. You are limited only by your imagination! For example:

    We will swim in January.

We will swim outside in January.

A horse will fly through our kitchen window.

The leaves will change colour in the fall.

A dinosaur is coming to the local zoo.

    ECO CORNER

There are many simple things we can do to save water. Learn from the water-efficiency hero Flo what you can do today to help protect our water supply!

    TURN OFF THE TAP

Just by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth in the morning and before bedtime, you can save up to 8 gallons of water! That adds up to more than 200 gallons a month, enough to fill a huge fish tank that holds 6 small sharks! The same is true when you wash dishes. Turn off the tap! Scrape your dirty dishes into the trash—then put them in the dishwasher.

    SHOWER POWER

Taking a shower uses much less water than filling up a bathtub. A shower only uses 10 to 25 gallons, while a bath takes up to 70 gallons! If you do take a bath, be sure to plug the drain right away and adjust the temperature as you fill the tub. To save even more water, keep your shower under five minutes long—try timing yourself with a clock

The weather is getting warmer each day and soon we will have very hot days on the playground at Buttonville. In order to stay safe in the sun all students should: wear clothing to cover their arms and legs, wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply sunscreen SPF 30 of higher before coming to school in the morning. Students should not wear clothing to school that is revealing or provocative. Midriffs and undergarments must remain covered at all times and shorts should be mid-thigh in length. Tube tops, halter tops, and other tops with narrow

shoulder straps or “spaghetti” straps are unacceptable

    ME TO WE

The Me to We student leaders have been meeting regularly. To honour Women's Day, we made bracelets in the library with all interested students. It was so heartwarming to see inter‐age groupings and students helping each other with so many  focused faces and fingers as they created meaningful art. The student leaders have been planning and working to conduct activities.

We have been playing chess, doing homework, reading and tutoring each other in the library during recess. Also, our Maker Space provides the room and materials for students to explore learning with tactile resources, an opportunity to experiment creatively as they solve challenges and posed problems. It's a busy place, bubbling over with student inter‐est, drive and initiative. Currently, Scholastic Book Fair will be  from May 14 ‐May 18.   All proceeds from the sales go to support the library collection.

    CHESS CLUB

    Spring Events @ Buttonville

We thought spring would never arrive  but opportunities for Buttonville students carried on despite cold icy weather. Some of the activities included extracurriculars such as the ongoing Chess club and Junior and Intermediate Drama clubs. Our community will get to see the original play, Buttonville Gots Talent! as created and performed by Grades 3‐5 students, on Thursday, May 3. Our Spring Show includes the Concert Band, A cappella singers, dancers, actors, musi‐cians and singers. With the talents of our tech crew and a supportive staff, students will display their considerable skills. The Intermediate club will be performing Shakespeare in the Park in early June. Speaking of the Arts, our stu‐dents have seen quite a few performances in the last several months, including Ballet Creole, Rumplestiltskin and a play at Young People's Theatre.  As well they participated in age appropriate workshops by Telus with a focus on Digital citizenship and cyberbullying.

Our Grade 8's in Davis/Feeley's class wrote, choreographed and performed an original piece at Alexander Mackenzie Secondary school. They were amazing and will do a repeat performance at our Spring Show.

As well, our Grade  8's went to Markham City Hall  to explore options available to them with respect to volunteering and civic activism. It was remarkable to hear all the doors that can open to students who have the desire and drive to give of themselves.

Our Buttonville Book Fair is starting on May 14 and will run for the week. Students have been asking about that since we finished our Fall Book Fair!

Chess Club is up and running at Buttonville!
