What does it mean to say that gender is performative?

[] To say that gender is performative [...] means that it produces a series of effects. Weact and walk and speak and talk in ways that consolidate an impression of being a manor being a woman [] We act as if that being of a man or that being of a woman is

actually an internal reality or something that is simply true about us, a fact about us.Actually, it is a phenomenon that is being produced all the time and reproduced all thetime. So to say gender is performative is to say that nobody really is a gender from thestart I know its controversial, but thats my claim.

How should this notion of gender performativity change the way we look at gender?

[] There are institutional powers, like psychiatric normalization, and there are informalkinds of practices, like bullying, which try to keep us in our gender place. Theres a realquestion for me about how such gender norms get established and policed and what the

best way is to disrupt them and to overcome the police function. Its my view that gender

is culturally formed but its also a domain of agency or freedom. Its most important toresist the violence that is imposed by ideal gender norms, especially against those who aregender different, who are non-conforming in their gender presentation

O que significa dizer que o gnero performativo?

Dizer que o gnero performativo [] significa [dizer] que ele produz uma srie deefeitos. Agimos, andamos, falamos e conversamos de maneiras que consolidam umaimpresso de ser um homem ou ser uma mulher [...]. Agimos como se esse ser umhomem ou esse ser uma mulher fosse na verdade uma realidade interna ou algumacoisa que simplesmente verdade sobre ns, um fato sobre ns. Na verdade, trata-se deum fenmeno que est sendo produzido e reproduzido o tempo todo. Dizer, ento, que ognero performativo, dizer que, na realidade, ningum um gnero desde o incio sei que isso controverso, mas essa minha tese.

Como essa noo performativa do gnero poderia mudar a maneira como encaramos ognero?

e policiadas e qual a melhor maneira de romp-las e superar a funo policiadora.Minha viso que o gnero culturalmente formado mas que tambm um domnio deao e liberdade. extremamente importante resistir violncia que imposta pelasnormas de gnero ideais, principalmente contra aqueles que possuem um gnerodiferente, que so no-conformistas na sua apresentao de gnero.
