LEICHHARDT ONE MILE COMMUNITY
CENTRE NEWSLETTER
Please enjoy the latest issue of our newsletter loaded with information about past and upcoming events. It’s an especially busy time of the year for Under 5’s activities and as a result it is a bit of a focus for this newsletter. The increased collaboration between organisations in the area around the Early Years and supporting healthy development in our littlies means that there will continue to be lots of events and programs in the area for parents to access. If you are a parent or interested community member and want to know more about or get involved in the behind-the-scenes planning please get in touch with Ainsley or Alana. Our late opening hours trial is going well with people who can’t attend the Centre during business hours now able to access our services on Mondays until 8pm. Everyone is welcome to come down on Monday the 9th of May for a casual pizza and games night (50 cents per slice) from 5:30pm – 7:30pm. If you have any stories or information you would like us to include in the next newsletter please let us know or if you’ve been thinking for ages about talking to us about an idea you have for the community why not come down and say hi or drop us an email. This community centre and the programs and services that run here are open to everyone - if you see something here that interests you but don’t live in Leichhardt or One Mile don’t worry! People come from all over Ipswich to use the Centre. A community doesn’t have to be about your postcode - it’s wherever, whenever or with whoever that you feel like you belong.

COMMUNITY CLOSE THE GAP
MORNING TEA
RECENT EVENTS
FAMILY EASTER BREAKFAST
Well we got through all our events during the month we dubbed ‘March Mayhem’ and had lots of fun along the way:
This was a great chance to reflect on the steps that have been made to Closing the Gap as well as to chat with local elders, and other community representatives about ways we can continue to make improvements as a whole of community approach. Thank you to the staff and volunteers who worked hard to make this event a success. If you want to know more about the Close the Gap movement there is some great information online at: https://www.humanrights.gov.au/sites/default/files/content/social_justice/health/ctg_community.pdf
We loved having the Leichhardt State School Walking Bus join in our Community breakfast to celebrate Neighbour Week and get excited about Easter. The kids were SO well behaved and did their school proud. Thanks to all staff, volunteers and parents from the school & centre who made it possible and for some kind donations from big-hearted community members who made it all possible.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM We’ve just finished our latest holiday program with a fantastic group of kids. Some of the activities we enjoyed were a Street Science’s Snow & Slime show & workshop, garden craft & clay activities, & an excursion to the Queens Park Nature Centre. Thanks to our volunteers & the Ipswich City Council for making this possible.

CONNECTING DIGITALLY
Computer Lessons We are now able to offer FREE one on one & small group computer lessons in basic computing with Windows, word processing, using the internet, creating resumes, setting up smartphones, setting up facebook or using digital cameras, ipads or other e-readers. Come along with your question and we will see if we can help. If your device is portable you are welcome to bring it in too or you can use one of the Centre’s PCs, laptops or ipads purchased thanks to the Our Neighbourhood grant that we were awarded by Australia Post. Light refreshments are even included! At this stage appointments are offered on Mondays from 4:30 – 7:30pm so call or email [email protected] to book.
Can You Help? We are still looking for more volunteer computer trainers to help our community get online. You don’t need excellent IT skills, just a basic understanding and some patience – for example many of our seniors would just like someone to teach them to send an email or upload photos from their camera or maybe Skype the grandkids. This role would suit high school students looking for work experience or to do community service.
Community Facebook Page A dedicated facebook group for this community has been created by a local resident and is called Leichhardt | One Mile | Wulkuraka | Community Group (URL-https://www.facebook.com/groups/LeichhardtOneMileWulkuraka/). It’s a great way for our community to share news, events & ideas about our area so get connected! (If you want help finding out how facebook can be used to keep you up to date with local events and services book into one of our computer sessions!
Local Knowledge Wanted Do you have thoughts about how our local area could be improved? Or maybe you have great memories of how it used to be? Are you a member of a local group and want to let people know what you do? Submit an article for our COMMUNITY BLOG! You don’t need to be a professional writer and it can be as long or as short as you like about whatever you like (we don’t guarantee to publish everything of course!). Send your stories to [email protected].
CHILDREN’s PLAYSPACE FOR HIRE
The Parent & Child Expo is here again! This is a great day to come down and enjoy free food & entertainment while finding out about the great services and programs on offer for kids in the region.
