FORWARD

It reduces driving effort by 70%, it electro-nically compensates for drift and wheel un-balances and by eliminating the hydraulic steering system it helps to reduce fuel con-

N ot only keeping up with the times but actually anticipating them. This is what

Iveco has been doing for the last 40 years with its Daily in order to continue to be at the top of the list of commercial vehicles in terms of performance, sustainability, low fuel consum-ption and operating costs.Once again we can talk today of ‘New Daily’, where the ‘new’ consists of the integration of a complete set of driver assistance systems, the optimization of safety systems and the development of connectivity in order to offer increasingly complete vehicle assistance and service management.Seen from outside, the new Daily stands out only for some changes on the front. The bum-per is now divided into 3 sections in order to easy the replacement operations in the event of damage. The ventilation grille (tougher) has been extended to increase the ventilation capacity of the engine and radiator and inclu-des coloured inserts in black (standard), silver (for models fitted with Hi-Matic gearbox) or light blue (for electric and gas-powered Blue Power models). The external lighting techno-logy has also been changed with LED lights that, in addition to never need to be replaced, increase visibility in both short and wide ran-ge (+ 10% and + 12%).Inside, the driving position features a steering wheel of reduced dimensions and asymmetri-cally shaped (more ergonomic), axially (45 mm) and angularly (4 degrees) adjustable and complete with controls that integrate up to 20

sumption. At the center of the dashboard there is a

data, from driver assistan-ce systems (see box on the following

page) to trip data. The classic hand brake lever has been replaced by an elec-tric parking brake (EPB) that can be activated via a square button (P) inserted in the lower part of the dashboard (on the right), near the short gear le-ver. DRIVER ASSISTANCEThe new Daily is fitted

with new safety and driver assistance systems, which in addition to redu-cing the driver’s stress le-vels are aimed at preven-ting dangerous situations. The Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) intervenes to prevent col-lisions at speeds below 80 km/h and mitigates the impact at higher speeds. It also features the City Brake PRO system to prevent accidents at low speeds (starting from 5 km/h).Basically, if the driver does not intervene directly, the combination of the two systems avoids the colli-sion with static obstacles when traveling from 5 to 20 km/h and up to 80 km/h (except for the 7.2-ton Daily) or the collision with moving vehicles that proceed at low speed (10 km/h) when traveling from 5 to 80 km/h. In both ca-ses, if you travel at higher speeds, a reduction in tra-vel speed is automatically activated. There are three stages of behaviour of AEBS & City Brake PRO: detec-tion of the danger, visual and acoustic warning to

the driver, autonomous braking. In addition to the Adapti-ve Cruise Control, which adjusts the set speed to keep safety distance from the vehicle ahead, there is now also the Queue Assist system that intervenes in

urban traffic situations by following the vehicle ahe-ad in slow-moving queues. Acting in combination with the Hi-Matic automatic transmission, the system automatically operates ac-celerator and brakes, up to complete stop. To ensure driving stability, the new Daily uses two sy-stems. The ProActive Lane Keeping Assist (offered as

an optional in combination with the Lane Departure Warning) which acts on the steering to help the driver in keeping the lane and the Crosswind Assist which in-tervenes in the presence of strong side wind. Through the ESP sensors, it applies the necessary brakes to the wheels on the side facing the wind.Other driver assistance systems are the Hill De-scent Control system that enables the driver to de-scent the steepest slopes slowly and safely, and the Traction Plus system that increases the grip of the wheels on slippery surfaces for speeds up to 30 km/h. It automatically detects and brakes the wheel that is losing grip, transferring the torque to the wheel with major grip. Both sy-stems can be activated by the controls aligned in the upper part of the central dashboard. •

CONNECTIVITYAS result of the par-

tnership between Iveco and Microsoft, the new connectivity allows the new Daily to offer services to improve efficiency and ease predictive maintenan-ce.The vehicle’s real-time ope-rating data are provided to the Iveco Control Room in order to be able to face any problems in advance, take preventive measu-res and plan maintenance operations as efficiently as possible. With this remote assistance service, the risk of machine downtime (and time) is reduced. In order to optimize the ef-ficiency of the new Daily is

also available the MyDaily portal, accessible from computers or mobile devi-ces, to keep under control the performance, fuel con-sumption and the driver’s driving style. It also inclu-des any suggestions for the

driver. Finally, for fleet manage-ment, it is available the complete package offered by Verizon Connect for navigation, advanced dia-gnostics, driving times and much more. •

INFOTAINMENTThe vehicle is equipped

with the Hi-Connect sy-stem with voice recognition function. It features a 7 ”screen on which the images taken from the rear camera or from the map of the TomTom navi-gation system are displayed. It also includes a DAB ra-dio and enables the driver to mirror his mobile device with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to use its apps safely while driving. •

City function of the electric power steering and for the Traction Plus and Hill Descent Control assistance systems. Not immediately visible but important for the efficiency of the new Daily, is the twin-leaf rear suspension system for single wheels (commercial models) which increases the damping force in extension at full load con-dition by 30%.

The innovations dedicated to the performan-ce and fuel economy of the traction system concern, indeed, all models. 2.3-liter F-1A engines (also mounted on school buses and on Daily Lines with power output of 156 hp) now use a new electronic-controlled variable geometry turbine (eVGT) that in addition to ensuring faster response in transient condi-tions, also offers greater efficiency and the-

refore fuel savings. The same eVGT is also mounted on the 3-li-ter F1C, which is now also available for all minibus models with 210 hp power output. 180 hp models continue to mount the variable geometry turbine with pneumatic control.Fuel economy is achieved also through the Start & Stop system, which is available as

standard on all models running the F1A en-gine.Minibuses that mount EPB can feature optio-nally a storage box next to the driver’s seat with tray and space for two half-liter bottles. The automatic opening of the electric passen-ger door is always in combination with the EPB. • Other articles about Iveco: https://bustocoach.com/en/costruttore/iveco-bus-fr/
