The biggest social challenge at this time is the process ofurbanization of the world population, as shown in these figures below:
In 1970 a third of 3 billion people lived in cities.In 2000 half of 6 billion people lived in cities.In 2030 two third of 8 billion people will live in cities.
An increase of 2 % in 1800 to 60 % in 2025.

What role do new cities play in this process of urbanization and how can they contribute to receive this incredible stream of new urban habitants?
In this perspective the municipality of New Town Almere, the Netherlands took the initiative to found a scientific knowledge network on new towns:

The International New Town Institute considers new towns as those human settlements that were founded at a certain moment in history by an explicit act of will, according to a preceding plan and able to play a relatively independent role in its regional environment.

The mission of this new institute is to acquire, activate and disseminate knowledge, experience and insights in the field of new towns; serving those who have to face the task to develop new towns or transform existing new towns in the case of growth, stabilization or decline.

In the long run the INTI will be the documentation centre of new towns.
• The website will act as ‘new town database’. • The collection will be gathered in cooperation with the
Public Library Almere.• Connections with New Land heritage centre and libraries
of the universities in Delft and Amsterdam will be established.
• There is room for the archives of INTA, International Urban Development Association, and the IFHP, International Federation for Housing & Planning.

• New Town Simulator
The New Town Simulator is a laboratory for urban simulation modeling.
The New Town Simulator:• is the core of this (national) knowledge centre,• offers models from various relevant disciplines,• is of use to researchers and students,• is attracting international researchers and students,• lets professionals brush up their professional knowledge,• is encouraging starting companies.

The field of research globally consists of 4 (inter)related lines:
• environment & technique:
• migration and settlement patterns,
• economical development, landownership,
• cultural patterns, values and norms and their influence on development processes.
The research focuses on three themes:
• development of new towns within the 21st century,
• regeneration of new tows from the 20th century, and
• new towns in a historic perspective.
