Private RoRo service between Davao, Manado soon to startA PRIVATE roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel will sail from the Philippines to neighboring Indonesia by the middle of this year, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) said on Friday. The upcoming Davao-Bitung route of the Super Shuttle Ro-Ro will be the Phi lippines’ f irst Ro-Ro service to a neighboring Southeast Asian country. PCCI said the Davao-Bitung Ro-Ro project was the result of the memorandum of cooperation signed by the business chambers of the cities of Davao and Manado, the capital of Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province, during the Davao Investment Forum last November. “The private sector has taken the lead in spearheading

the implementation of the project through a bilateral a r r a n g e m e nt b e t w e e n the business sector of the Philippines and Indonesia,” PCCI president Miguel B. Varela said in a statement. “[T]he init iat ive is a mi lestone in improving Asean connectivity and in expanding trade, tourism

Mitsubishi recalls Mirage GLS unitsLESS than a year after its launch, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) will recall more than 1,000 units of its subcompact Mirage GLS due to a brake system flaw, the Japanese carmaker said in a statement on Friday. “Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. ...wi l l conduct a sa fet y reca l l of the Mitsubishi Mirage GL S mo de l s e qu ipp e d with antilock brake system (ABS) both for manual and automat ic t ransmission variants,” the statement read. “The purpose of this safety recall is to replace the front wheel speed sensors. These sensors were found to have insufficient waterproofing,” it added. Mitsubishi explained the flaw could allow penetration by water amid rain or during car-wash, causing the ABS system “not to function

correctly”. Affected units were those sold from November 2012 to March 2013, the company said.

It added that while it has not received any report of accidents due to this “problem”, it was directed by its principal, Japan-based

Raise your standard of livingYou’ve heard of people who try to raise their standard

of living at almost any cost. They’ll go without many things to get a higher education, hoping it will later get them a higher-paying job and career. Some even move their family to another country to raise their standard of living. Still others will only let their children marry someone whose standard of living is the same or higher than theirs. Many of us spend much of our life working to raise our standard of living in terms of money and status. Then when we finally reach the standard of living we want, we still have to work hard to make sure we stay there! But there are people whose standard of living never changes, whether they have a lot of money or not. They always enjoy a high standard of living in their own character and daily lifestyle. They’re always honest, loving, and kind. They’re quick to forgive others who wrong and hurt them. They’re in control of their physical desires for pleasure, so they always have great fun in life without hurting their own bodies or other people. They enjoy real happiness and closeness every day in their marriage and with their kids. You see, the kind of person we are inside is what gives us our real standard of living, not material things or status! So what kind of character and daily lifestyle do you have? What kind of marriage and family do you have? What

Mobilizing our savingsThe recent passage of a law making life insurance more

affordable for Filipinos is a welcome development for those who wish to invest in their future. By reducing taxes on insurance premiums, Republic Act 10001 will enable more Filipinos to purchase life insurance – financially preparing them and their families in the event of unforeseen circumstances such as illness and death. This legal measure is not only seen to increase the sale of life insurance, it is also expected to play an important role in savings mobilization. Together with the recent passage of Republic Act 2505 or the Personal Equity and Retirement Account (PERA) Act, and Republic Act 9576 or the law amending the charter of the Philippine Deposit Corporation (PDIC), Republic Act 10001 helps create an environment conducive for saving. I wrote in a past column about how the PERA Act will allow Filipino workers to prepare for their retirement by having a special savings account invested by professional fund managers. Republic Act 9576, on the other hand, increased the maximum deposit insurance coverage from P250,000 to P500,000 as a preemptive response to the global financial crisis. More significantly, this has helped allay the Filipino depositors’ fears of losing their hard-earned savings and encourage them to save more in the bank. So what is savings mobilization? It is how the authorities formulate and implement policies that urge us to prioritize investment over consumption. To do this, we save our money in banks, insurance companies, or other financial institutions. These institutions serve as channels for spurring economic growth through their lending to companies and enterprises that in turn generate more employment and other economic activities.

kind of friends? There are many people who have heaps of money and status, but they have a low standard of living, because of the low level of their own personal character. They’re dishonest, greedy, competitive, and jealous of what other people have. They gossip and use people to get what they want. They don’t have much love and forgiveness in their heart for people who wrong and hurt them. There are heaps of rich people who do not possess real love, peace, and satisfaction in their marriage and family! This is why our Maker is the only One Who can give us the power, honesty, and love we need to raise our standard of living by raising the level of our character. It’s only when we ask Jesus Christ to start changing us that we can start enjoying a truly high standard of living. So why not ask Jesus to take complete charge of your heart and way of living? It’s only then you can start climbing the ladder of REAL success and satisfaction for the rest of your life. Just Think a Minute…

According to the PDIC, there is a need to raise the rate of investments to enable the Philippines to move toward a higher economic growth path. Investments, the PDIC says, require f inancing through s av i ngs gener ated f rom domestic and foreign sources. The PDIC notes, however, t hat foreign sources a re unsustainable and increase the country’s vulnerability to international capital f light. Thus, PDIC recommends that the expansion of domestic savings should be enhanced as a necessary condition to boost capital formation, mobilizing our savings and achieve sustained economic growth. Savings are commonly understood as the portion of income left after deducting all expenditures and payment of liabilities for a given period. The money left is usually set aside and kept in banks to earn interest. By investing our savings in banks, we are rewarded with “investment returns” in the form of interest. This is because our banks also invest the money we deposit in construction, housing, or business loans. Through these loans, companies and businesses would have sufficient money to fund their activities – endeavors that would have a long-term effect on the economy. Investing in a PERA account or in a life insurance would also bring about the same desired outcome: By investing one’s money in investment products, the life insurance company or the professional fund manager (in the case of PERA) would, in the long run, spur economic growth.

Dubai’s palatable Asian disheswhew! And, there, I thought my night was fantastic and complete.

But then, the Laksa Soup was a surprise. It’s a seafood soup with coconut mi lk, shrimp, calamares, fish cake, egg, a taste of chicken powder with noodles and bean sprouts as main mantles. It was the best soup I ever tasted in Dubai.

Wok In’s kitchen is nestled at the center of the restaurant itself, and every diner can see the chopping, the mixing, the frying, the grilling – real cooking being done there; and, there was the most-awaited part – The Noodle Show – a cook, who has Chinese features, performed an over-the-top moulding of pasta. It looked easy on him but, definitely, the skill he has can’t be transferred to anyone as easy as you see him perform it. Restaurant guests moved up close to him for picture-taking. Like seeing a clown performing, children, who were with some guests, were delighted by his performance. They chuckled at the performing cook’s way of throwing the moulded f lour left and right, stretching it and dropping it over with a loud sound at the work table. I felt like I was in an amphitheatre, where the diners belong to social strata

There have always been rooms for Asian food in UAE’s sprawling geography, where almost all kinds of dishes

are scattered in pleasant dining places in its seven Emirates. But this one I walked into was, at its best, an Asian cuisine restaurant, where family and friends can escape from downtown rush-kind of food and taste palatable Asian food with culinary consciousness.

Wok In restaurant is truly a walk-up restaurant, where people from all walks of life can easily drop by, simply because it is within the heart of Deira, and once you have located Movenpick Hotel Deira, you’ll find Wok In easily situated at its ground f loor, where you can find solace in that Asian cuisine restaurant, which opened early 2011, when I was there, and shortly after Movenpick Hotel did.

Wok In restaurant coalesced at Movenpick Hotel and it reshaped the notions of Asian food in restaurants to its best.

As soon as I was seated and opened the menu, I was hooked to one appetizer like a magnet. I must admit, I’m a vulture of Japanese food -- California Maki (Wok In’s had avocado in it instead of mango), Shrimp Tempura, Tofu, and served with Wasabe.

As soon as the order came, which was commendably fast, I grabbed a pair of chopsticks and dipped a whole California Maki into the Wasabe stirred in black sauce. As if I wasn’t satisfied with Wasabe’s biting upshot, I put on more Wasabe; and some more until I felt ‘that’ prickle-tingle feeling ran up my nostril and went up my head,

travel magazine which reviews popular cities in the world pooled from opinions of foreign travelers as they compare prices of hotels and resorts for value of money, food, attractions and locations in the travel industry, rated the Philippines last year in the 10th ranking among the favorable options of international travelers. Manila entered for the first time as a point of entry after Jakarta in Indonesia, Katmandu in Nepal and Calcutta in India. Manila however was not listed as a destination of preference. Surprisingly, the travelers survey instead rank Palawan as breathtaking islands in the Philippines with 40% positive reviews out of 2,141 foreigners who responded to the survey. Boracay which was awarded recently as one of the world’s best beaches destination gathers only 17 percent followed by Bohol which was described as a combination of water, land and natures interest and rank at 13 percent. Manila and its Calabarzon suburbs were described as colorful and bustling but gathered only 4 percent of the foreign tourist reviews preceded by Banue with their rice terraces which were described as historical and picturesque at 3 percent. The still untapped destinations in the Philippines are with high expectations that await full development. This could mean that the current destinations lack modern infrastructures when translated in the tourism equations indicates lack of good roads, bridges, airports and seaports plus reliable transportation. Travelers feedback are high in Cagayan de Oro that we have a new modern airport but with chaotic transition. We have the most modern f leet of taxis in the Philippines but we have also the worst and undisciplined drivers in this part of the country. There are other encouraging and up- beat tourism development in the Philippines which shows in the tourism statistics of Davao City with more domestic travelers in the convention and shoppers market as their driver for growth. According to their City executive, Mayor Sarah Duterte “ their city has a population of a little more than 1 Million which swells to 1.5 Million as the day break and return to

In times of serious concern for the local economy, the importance of stability in airport services is paramount.

The sudden decision of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to close the Lumbia Airport by April 30 does not make good business sense. The Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry has already made an appeal to the CAAP for reconsideration due to passenger safety. These are some concerns related to this ill-advised decision. First, Lumbia Airport is a major employment center that provides 300 direct and indirect employment to workers resulting in severe job losses. The Lumbia airport management could have offered re-training of new skills for the airport personnel who will be made redundant this month. Second, the new Laguindingan Airport has no air navigation systems and support facilities to guide the pilots. The lack of navigational aids such as the Instrument Landing Systems; VHF omni-directional radio range (VOR); the Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), Meteorological Observing System; Precision Approach Lighting System and the Precision Approach Path Indicator highlights the risk of air accidents. Third, there is a need to preserve passenger safety to maintain the thriving tourism industry. Visitors f lying into the city spend more for lodging, retail, entertainment, and food when compared to visitors using other modes of travel. The number of visits staying in Cagayan de Oro for vacation, business purposes, or personal visits represents 89 percent of all persons boarding the airlines. Any airline accident in Cagayan de Oro airport will result in a 50% decline in passenger volume. Fourth, the hiring of new airport personnel needs lead-time. The management of Laguindingan International Airport will have to hire operations personnel, maintenance

Airport Transitionemployees, contract service employees, security officers, firefighters, contract janitorial service employees, specialized electricians, plumbers and air conditioning mechanics. The loading bridges and baggage conveyor systems require specialized service personnel. The workers need to undergo technical and customer service training. The airport has to create a safety team that will institute full serviceability inspection and a high-speed taxiway and runway inspections. Fourth, the Airport Administration needs to give time for the airlines, car rental agencies, food and beverage facilities, gift shops, and tenants to set up their services. The airport officials need to facilitate airport transfers system through private and public vehicles from the city to the new airport. A well-planned transition for aviation services in Cagayan de Oro would ensure the essential safety and security factors that would contribute to the confidence level of business and leisure travellers alike. Passenger safety is over and above business expediency and presidential prerogative. The expected technical and personnel glitches in the airport operations in Laguindingan Airport will result in negative financial impacts such as delayed arrivals of tourists and business travellers and the phenomenon of inconvenience and tedium as airport personnel attempt to master their respective responsibilities. This is hardly the kind of airport opening one would expect of an international airport that is supposed to be an economic magnet for Mindanao.

converged there for the performance. The centrality of the kitchen catches everyone’s attention and the funicular-like throwing and dumping sound by the performing cook reminded me of Chinese ritual dances. Like the others, I enjoyed the show all throughout. It’s a good thing the main coarse, came after the show.

I picked Thai duck Curry for the main course. Grape and pineapple reduced to nil the usual ambivalent duck taste, and I know it has been pickled overnight. Shipped from Brazil, the roasted duck was tossed in coconut milk, some fennel, a taste of lime and sweet basil veiled with cherry tomatoes and mixed in red curry paste. And the Chinese fried rice mixed with prawn, carrots enlivened with mushroom spring onion perfectly suits the course.

I also got Sambal Prawn mantled with kangkong. It was the kangkong leaves that I was attracted to. Having missed home, I missed the typical green vegetable leaves we abundantly have in our country.

Sambal Prawn is not new to Filipinos. It’s a dish common to most of us and Asian countries like our neighbors, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and China.

Wok In restaurant is Dubai’s pelagic pleasure, so to speak, in terms of seafood.

Wok In is the restaurant truly meant for Asian cuisine, which is almost illusory here and the f lavors were f leeting. With Wok In, Asian dishes endure and instant memories of time and home places, wherever you came from in Asia, ultimately come alive, even as you can speak as much Asian with the staff inside Wok In restaurant.

Easily the best in Asian food in Dubai -- fresh and cooked while you look!

It’s a perfect dinner spot for family, friends or couples or even for a birthday bash!

I wish I could have another night to walk up to Movenpick’s Wok In because the restaurant’s staff were incredibly nice. Definitely, there’s more than biting in Wok In. Oh, sure, I’m a carnivore but I should like to take on the crabs, as well.

At Wok In, you’re not just be sitting there waiting. You’re going to enjoy the “Noodle Show” and you’ve got to admire the food preparations too.

1 Million as night falls”. Was there a paradigm shift that took place in their marketing strategies? What is the secret of Davao in its leadership and promotions? Is it the price factor or the city discipline? The people of Davao behind their tourism industry and the local officials running their governance could have more grasp and understanding of the tourism statistics that matters most to the progress of their city. Davao City has established and funded a City Tourism and Investment Board which has been working juggernaut in the marketing and promotions by attending regional and international gatherings where buyers and sellers converge. Davao City understood that the tourism revenue sources last year contributed P571.3 Billion to the 6.6 percent growth of the GDP of the economy from figures released by National Statistics Coordination Council broken down to P130.5 Billion from tourist investments or 22.9 percent and P63.9 Billion from the hotel & resorts accommodation or 11.2 percent. While entertainment and recreation accounted for P55.2 Billion or 6.8 percent. Acknowledged by our high government officials during the MICECON in Davao last March 7-9, 2013, the growth of Philippine tourism is a major source of jobs for the people in a destination. It has also attracted foreign capital as the money used for buildings and infrastructures came from foreign sources. Accordingly, at the rate we are performing the statistics and government forecast estimates that there will be 56 million domestic travelers and more than 6 million foreign tourist arrivals before the end of 2016.

Local hog, poultry industryplayers seek incentivesfrom government too

among local industry players that will benefit the country and the consumers. A s t h i s d e v e l o p e d , o f f i c i a l s o f N a t i o n a l Federation of Hog Farmers, Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines, Association of Philippine Aqua Feeds Millers, and Sorosoro Ibaba Development Cooperative, hog and poultry raisers groups, and representatives of Abono, Agham and AGAP Party-List have asked the Supreme Court to nullify the government’s decision to grant tax incentives to the Thai food company as a pioneering venture, branding it as “unlawful, whimsical and capricious.” The petitioners also asked the Supreme Court to issue a temporary restraining order to stop the BOI from granting Charoen Pokphand privi leges that include a seven-yea r i ncome t a x holiday.

LOCAL hog and poultry raisers here and nearby provinces have urged the Bureau of Industry (BOI) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) to apprise them of the incentives available to them in the light of the recent issue that Thai firm Charoen Pokphand was able to get a grant of a seven-year tax holiday as well as other perks. In a recent public hearing conducted at the House of Representatives on the reported grant of incentives to the Charoen Pokphand Inc., BOI Executive Director Lucita Reyes confirmed that the Charoen Pokphand Foods Philippines Corp., (CPFPC) does not own the parcels of lands in the provinces of Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Bataan where the CPFPC project sites are located. The use of the properties is covered by lease agreements, said Reyes, who made the confirmation based on the cer t i f icat ions issued by various provincial assessors. Lawyer Elias Inciong, v ic e pre s id e nt o f t he United Broilers and Raisers A s s o c i a t ion s (U BR A), criticized the government f o r a l l o w i n g f o r e i g n investors easy access to the local markets without first establishing measures

that will enable the local industry players to meet the competition. Reyes , on t he ot her hand, explained that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) implements a Shared Service Facilities P r o g r a m d e s i g n e d t o support the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Reyes said with a current allocation of P700 million, t he prog r a m prov ide s MSMEs farm equipment and machineries they need such as drying and cold storage facilities to improve local production capabilities and the competitiveness of the local products. goes daily! Today, Apri l 8 , 2013, marks the day BusinessWeek Mindanao has metamorphosed into a regional daily business newspaper to be known as “BusinessDaily”. The f irst of its kind among regional newspapers to accomplish such feat. From a purely week ly business newspaper, to tri-weekly, and now joining the becoming crowded dai ly newspaper industry. The Sudaria Group of Publications has definitely de f ie d a l l o dd s i n t he publishing of a successful community daily newspaper in the country. Where the “J-School ” bel ieves that community newspapers have to undergo the birth pains before it could take a root of followers and subscr ibers , t he Sudar ia newspapers obliterated proven perceptions by trailblazing a new order in newspaper publishing. Of course, the success of community newspapers depends on the patronage of the business group and the political maturity of the readers. Obviously, Publisher Dante Sudaria’s faith of the people of Cagayan de Oro in particular and the patronage of the people in Mindanao in general has finally taken off. The birth of BusinessDaily demonstrates the enthusiasm of the people of Cagayan de Oro City and Mindanao to take another step toward an intelligent, enlightened, and informed readership. The business community is even more optimistic. The Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Oro Chamber), for one, considers this new development in a positive note. In an official statement, t he O ro C h a mb er s a id BusinessDaily will be “our key partners in the Chamber’s policy advocacy undertakings.” The road maybe rough and dreadful, but for the Sudaria Group of Publications, and all men behind it, every journey starts with a single step. And now we begin!

were awe inspiring that most people cou ld simply say unbelievable. Not w it hsta nd i ng , we are not writing a piece of another incredible success story of web programming or socia l networking site here. We are writing about the phenomenal success of BusinessWeek Mindanao as a provincial weekly newspaper. BusinessWeek Mindanao came off the press as an ambitious business newspaper whose primary objective then was survival. It is lamentable that most provincial newspapers had their beginnings aimed at an uncertain future. The parochial character of the community – both readers and business groups - is one of the reasons for the early demise of most community newspapers. BusinessWeek Mindanao was an exception. Armed with sheer guts, determination, and faith of the future, the young but visionary entrepreneur Dante Sudaria, the paper’s publisher, ventures along the dark alleys of newspaper publishing where “angels dare to tread.” In less than four years since BusinessWeek Mindanao was off the press on June 8, 2009, it gave birth to four other publications; the “Mindanao News Daily,” a daily newspaper, the “Mindanao Star,” a bi-lingual daily newspaper, the lifestyle weekly “Cagayan de Oro Times” and the monthly “BWM Business Magazine.” I n s o s hor t a t i me , there emerges the Sudaria Group of Publications, the mother company that now manages the growing weekly and daily newspapers that metamorphosed out of the then obscure BusinessWeek Mindanao newspaper. And today, BusinessWeek Minda nao accompl ished another milestone in the c o m m u n i t y n e w s p a p e r industry as it begins a new journey a notch higher. It begins to travel the rough road that “angels dare to tread.” It

Under Section 102 of R.A. 7942, “any person undertaking exploration work without the necessary exploration permit shall upon conviction be penalized by a fine of not exceeding fifty thousand pesos (P50,000.00).” Those included in the charge sheets were Peter Sy, SOMC president, and the company directors Dennis Chua, Delfin Milan, Minghui Yan, and Ping Shang. PLSMC directors Johnry Loreja, Lucille Sy, Yuan Xue Song, Huang Ying Xiang, Janette Go Sy, Roberto Buniales, Marilou Alquizar, and Ivy Edong were also charged. Assoc iate Prosecutor Ansharey Lalia’s resolution came months after the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Northern Mindanao (MGB-DENR-10) filed complaints against the SOMC and PLSMC and their officials for mineral theft, illegal exploration, and disobedience to persons in authority. In her resolution, Lalia said that the presence of

He said he has held high respect to the PCIJ as an institution. “[But] I hope that you will not allow yourself to fall into the manipulative efforts of desperate people involved in dirty politics.” JV Ejercito stood firm saying that he has truthfully and accurately declared all his assets, liabilities, and net worth in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN) since 2001 when he became Mayor of San Juan and up to the present as a member of the House of Representatives. the magnetic separator and sluice box is enough evidence that exploration was indeed undertaken by the mining companies. However, Lalia was later prompted to dropped the charges of mineral theft and disobedience to persons in authority because of lack of evidence. In August 2012, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) found out they were actually mining for gold and other minerals after confiscating a magnetic separator for iron recovery and a sluice box for gold recovery during an inspection in the riverside parts of barangays San Simon and Canitoan. The MGB-10 f i led the complaints against SOMC and PLSMC in November 2012. “We will rely on the wisdom of our prosecutor,” MGB-10 OIC Director RexMonsanto said. Mining, especially illegal hydraul ic mining in the hinterland barangays of the city, has been blamed for exacerbating the devastation wreaked by Tropical Storm Washi (Sendong) in the city on December 16, 2011.

Support girls’ empowerment through School MealsGroupon in Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Philippines) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) join hands in fighting hunger and

empowering girls through school meals programmes

BANGKOK, Thailand – Groupon, the global pioneer and leader in social e-commerce, and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, are launching a daily deal across Southeast Asia to support the empowerment of girls in Asia through school meals programmes.

From 25 March until 5 April 2013, Groupon will call on the general public to help provide a child with WFP school meals for four weeks and with a monthly ration

to take home. 100 percent of donations go directly to WFP’s School Meals Programmes, implemented in 14 countries in Asia, including five countries in Southeast Asia.

Poverty and tradition often exclude girls from education; more than 36 million primary school-aged girls around the world don’t attend school. Combating hunger among children helps to improve school performance, close the gender gap in schools and

empower girls by increasing their chances to have a brighter future.

One nutritious meal a day promotes regular attendance, as a poor family needs to provide one less meal per day for their children, and also offsets the cost of education. WFP seeks to increase the percentage of girls going to school through targeted interventions, such as take-home rations, which are given to girls in return for regular

school attendance and which benefit the entire family.

“We appreciate Groupon’s continuing commitment to fighting hunger in Asia, which fortunately includes the Philippines,” said Asaka Nyangara, WFP Philippines Deputy Country Director. “In WFP’s work in disaster- and conflict-affected communities in the country, we have found that a school meal has been a good way to encourage parents to send their children back to school. Together with take-home rations, these meals can indeed be a powerful investment in these children’s futures.”
