Democrat StaffPettis County’s economic climate is improving, with busi-nesses large and small expanding facilities and adding newjobs through the past year.Linda Christle, executive director of EconomicDevelopment Sedalia-Pettis County, said she expects “slowbut steady growth” to continue throughout the remainder ofthe year.“I think we have been fortunate here in that many of ourcompanies have been able to sustain themselves through acouple tough years, and some have even grown. I think wewill see that accelerate through the year — I think all indi-cators point to that,” Christle said.During its annual board meeting in January, Christle saidEDPSC submitted prospect proposals to four companiesconsidering relocating or expanding into the county thatwere referred by the state Department of EconomicDevelopment and Missouri Partnership.

The quarterly report also highlighted recent growth in localbusinesses. Christle said Blue Demon Co., Orion PrintFinishing, Honu Photography and Screen Printing andBlack Dawn Armory each announced expansion projects inthe last quarter of 2010.“We have a lot of small companies we’re working with thatare growing. They are all important and adding to our econ-omy,” Christle stated.According to the Missouri Economic Research and

Information Center(MERIC) website (mis-sourieconomy.org), a widearray of businesses in the13-county West CentralRegion, which includesPettis, saw modest growth

in the third quarter of 2010.Manufacturing firms postedthe biggest gains, with 7percent growth over the pre-vious year.February unemploymentnumbers remained high at

9.6 percent, falling from 9.8percent in January as areaemployers reduced seasonalstaff. Of the 20,093 whocomprise the county’s civil-ian work force, 1,919 peo-ple were unemployed. Those numbers were slight-ly higher than the seasonal-ly-adjusted rate of 9.4 per-cent statewide, but were afull percentage point lowerthan the 10.6 percent unem-ployment rate for the WestCentral Region. The regional average wagewas $543 per week in thethird quarter of 2010.The improving economy, buoyed by $21.79 million inFederal Recovery Zonebonds, helped fuel expan-sion at Sedalia-basedProEnergy Services, whichbegan work on an industrial

turbine repair shop, officeand warehouse, all locatedon 52 acres of propertyadjacent to its headquarters.Following the project’sannouncement last June,Chris Stratton, ProEnergychief financial officer, saidthe expansion would allowthe company to create an“assembly-line” for work oncommercial natural gas tur-bines used to generate elec-tricity. Stratton said the tur-bines are heavy pieces ofequipment and the companycurrently pays a consider-able amount to transport theturbines between its mainte-nance facility in Sedalia andadditional space the compa-ny leases near Kansas CityInternational Airport.“This is a very ambitiousexpansion of the company’s

footprint in Sedalia,”Stratton said. The company expected theproject to be completed insix to 12 months and esti-mates it will add at least100 jobs at the Sedalia facil-ity.Retiring baby boomers andincreased demand for cancerand cardiovascular treat-ment also helped propelprojects at BothwellRegional Health Center.BRHC wrapped up its capi-tal campaign in Octoberwith $3.35 million in contri-butions — just shy of itsgoal of $3.5 million. The donations will helpfund the construction of the$14 million Canon Centersfor Cancer andCardiovascular Care, slated

to open in fall of 2011,which will provide expand-ed and advanced care forcancer and heart patients inPettis and Benton counties.BRHC Marketing DirectorLisa Church said work onthe new center should becompleted this fall, and willbe followed by a renovationof the hospital’s existingcancer unit. The entire proj-ect should wrap up in early2012.The hospital is also lookingat a late-summer completiondate for its $8.2 million,three-story BothwellHealing Arts Center onWinchester Drive.Church said that site willhouse obstetrics and gyne-cology facilities and theSedalia offices of the

Columbia-based MissouriHeart Center. She said theremaining space would bereserved for future officespace for newly recruitedphysicians.

“This will help make usmore competitive in recruit-ing physicians. When theycome here they expectoffice space to be provid-ed,” Church said.

Bothwell Regional HealthCenter began treating cancerpatients on its new linearaccelerator in mid-February.The $2.7 million linear accel-erator, which provides radia-tion therapy, is one of the firststeps in improving cancertreatment services for the

community. Another majorstep is the construction of theCanon Center for Cancer andCardiovascular Care on theeast side of the hospital.

The two-story, 15,000-square-foot addition, whichwill be completed this fall, will include new chemothera-py treatment areas, newreception and exam areas, anoutside therapy garden, andconsolidation of cardiovascu-lar services to a centralizedlocation. Additional renova-tion to the space these pro-grams currently occupy isexpected to be complete inJanuary 2012.

Women’s health servicesalso have been greatlyenhanced with a $1.1 millionrenovation to Bothwell’sWomen’s Health Unit.

Bothwell is in the final phaseof the project, which includestwo new and two renovatedlabor-delivery-recoveryrooms and updates to theunit’s 18 private patientrooms.
