Mr. Greek Express on Rutherford Road is a 2400 square foot restaurant that has been operating for eight years. As a business with high refrigeration needs, owner Sherif Sami had seen a steady increase in his electricity bills. Sami heard about the Business Refrigeration Incentives (BRI) program through the PowerStream employees that ate at his restaurant. He immediately recognized the value in the program. “My bills kept going up,” said Sami. “As a small business owner, I couldn’t keep doing this.”

The Total Refrigeration LoadAn on-site energy audit is the fi rst step in the BRI program. The main refrigeration at Mr. Greek Express came through the walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer located in the back of the restaurant. Additional sandwich prep coolers operated in the customer service area along with drink coolers. The total refrigeration load contributed to over 50 percent of his electricity costs.

Free Equipment Upgrades PowerStream developed a customized “Energy Action Plan” based on the audit information with the BRI program providing up to $2,500 in incentives to pay for the cost of material and labour.

Six 1/15 hp ECM motors on the walk-in units were upgraded along with a single 9 watt motor. The condenser coils on all units were cleaned and strip curtains were installed on both the walk-in freezer and walk-in cooler.

SavingsThe retro ts resulted in approximately 20,312 kWh reduction in consumption and an electricity savings of $2,301* per year.

That’s an estimated $0.85* per square foot reduction in electricity costs.

Value of Retro t: $1,603

Cost to Business: $0

Monthly Savings: $170*

Estimated reduction in electricity costs: $0.85*/ft2

“It was easy to sign up for the program, and while they completed

the work they didn’t interrupt the work ow

of the restaurant.”Sherif Sami, Owner

Ease of Installation The equipment needed for the retrofi ts had been determined ahead of time and the installers worked quickly without any delays or disruptions to the restaurant. “It was easy to sign up for the program,” said Sami. “And while they completed the work they didn’t interrupt the workfl ow of the restaurant.”

The owners, Mila and Chang Ahn, had operated the store for a single year and found the electricity costs higher in the new location than at a previous, larger store. They were one of the rst businesses to sign up for the Business Refrigeration Incentives (BRI) program.

Reducing Refrigeration CostsAn on-site energy audit is the rst step in the BRI program. The Pine Valley Convenience store operates three ice cream freezers, a seven door drink cooler, two beverage refrigerators and an ice freezer. Only the seven door cooler is owned by the store and the audit focused on reducing the refrigeration costs for the unit.

Take Advantage of the Program

Success Story – Pine Valley ConveniencePine Valley Convenience is a 1,200 square foot convenience store located in Vaughan, Ontario.

“The BRI program was a good opportunity, the incentive paid for all the

work and we lowered our electricity costs.”

Chang Ahn, Owner

SavingsThe retro ts resulted in approximately 11,779 kWh reduction in consumption and an electricity savings of $1,100* per year.

That’s an estimated $1* per square foot reduction in electricity costs.

Value of Retro t: $2,500

Cost to Business: $0

Monthly Savings: $100*

Estimated reduction in electricity costs: $1*/ft2

Based on the audit information, a customized “Energy Action Plan” was created for Pine Valley Convenience with the BRI program providing up to $2,500 in incentives to pay for the cost of material and labour.

Five 1/20 hp ECM fan motors in the large cooler were upgraded along with the replacement of eight uor escent lamps with LED case lighting. “Convenience store owners will want to take advantage of the program since before the retro t the cooler lighting was so dif cult to replace,” said Ahn. All condenser coils on the cooler were cleaned.

No Disruptions As one of the fi rst businesses to sign up for the program, Pine Valley was also one of the fi rst businesses to have the work performed. “The whole process took 4 – 5 weeks from when we called in to PowerStream to when it was fi nished. The crew arrived mid-morning and completed the work in a single day. There were no disruptions to our business,” said Ahn.

Success Story – QuiznosQuiznos restaurant is a busy 1,700 square foot sandwich shop on Rutherford Road with up to fi fty percent of its electricity bill attributed to refrigeration. When the Business Refrigeration Incentives (BRI) program was fi rst launched, owner Peter Park recognized the opportunity to reduce his electricity bills and improve the quality of refrigeration for the ingredients in his well-known sandwiches.

“Getting the work done was a no-brainer,” said Park, who recently opened a second Quiznos and plans to adopt the same retrofi ts as the Rutherford store. “I didn’t pay anything for the work to be done and I’m saving on my monthly electricity costs.”

The Cost of RefrigerationAn on-site energy audit is the first step in the BRI program. At Quiznos, auditors documented the refrigeration equipment qualifying for the program: a large walk-in cooler and a walk-in freezer, two sandwich prep coolers, and a drink cooler next to the check-out area.

A Noticeable Difference A customized “Energy Action Plan” was created based on the audit information gathered as part of enrollment in the BRI program providing up to $2,500 in incentives to pay for the cost of material and labour.

Seven 1/15 hp ECM fan motors in the walk-ins along with two 9 watt ECM fan motors in the sandwich prep coolers were upgraded. Strip curtains were installed on the doors to the walk-in freezer and cooler. “Once the strip curtains were installed, we noticed a difference right away in the temperature of the freezer and cooler,” said Park. The drinks cooler had fl uorescent lighting retrofi tted to LED lighting and the condenser coils on all units were cleaned.

“It was very easy to have the work done.

The workers didn’t disrupt the business

and the job was completed in a single day. We were able to

keep working as if they weren’t even here.”

Peter Park, Owner

SavingsThe retrofits resulted in approximately 23,993 kWh reduction in consumption and an electricity savings of $2,400* per year.

That’s an estimated $1.40* per square foot reduction in electricity costs.
