Supplements.htm#s4p

Horses’ hooves can take a lot of wear and tear and may need something tohelp maintain a healthy condition. If horses are ridden on a hard or sandyarea it can cause trauma to the hoof, making it hard to maintain moisture.Lack of moisture in the hoof leads to brittle and cracked hooves.

Research performed in England shows that supplementing biotin to horseswith low quality hooves improves the hooves, making them stronger and less likely to crack.Though many other studies have been performed, most have the same results. The dosageshown to best maintain or improve hoof quality is approximately 15-30 mg/day. It was notedthat for the best results, an adequate supply of calcium must also come from the horse’s hay orgrain. Results of the supplementation were seen within nine to twelve months due to the factthat horses’ hooves take about a year to grow from the coronary band to the ground.

Though biotin is naturally made in the gut of the horse, supplementing it in the diet will not hurtbecause it is water soluble and is not stored in the body. Vitamin B-deficient horses especiallyneed biotin in their diet and should be supplemented. Also, horses that are stressed from beingtransported or stabled for long periods of time also can benefit from a biotin supplement.

While biotin helps with a horse’s hooves, it can also help maintain a healthy coat. The coat isthe horse’s largest organ. Biotin helps improve coat sheen, which is a sign that the horse itself isin good health. To enhance coat health, a horse may need only 8 mg of biotin per day. Resultsare usually visible within about five weeks.

Overall biotin is the best supplement to be used on a horse with brittle or cracked hooves or alackluster coat. Check with your veterinarian to determine an exact dosage schedule.

Should I feed extra biotin for hooves and the coat?

Do you recommend a biotin supplement forhooves and the coat? If so, in what amounts?Do horses normally make biotin in the body?

This answer was prepared with the help of Samantha Schreiber, Animal Science researchstudent, The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers University.

More Signs You’re AnEquestrian College Student

by Annamaria Tadlockwww.u l t ima teho rses i t e . com

- Your idea of a perfect boyfriend , besides being sweet, smart, andcaring, and all that — is one who can fix stalls, muck barns, andenjoys riding on the beach.

- Your instructor doesn’t remember your name but calls you “thehorse person”.

- In American History class, you often ask, “What was the name ofhis horse?”

- When you write papers for history classes, you always mention thehorses and their contributions to society.

- You get excited in an English Literature class when you comeacross material about horses.

- You’ve asked the engineering students to calculate thewingspan of a hypothetically functional pegasus(still waiting on the answer to that one...)

- You write a movie review for literatureclass on Henry V andconclude it by analyzing thehorsemanship.

- You can spend an hour discussinghorses with an instructor orclassmates, but not politics or sociology.

Horse Tales MY WISH FOR A PONY

by Lina Betts, 14

Sitting out in the pasture,

Watching the horses graze,

It was only last year,

When I seemed to be in a haze.

I wanted a pony real bad.

My parents weren’t so sure.

I gave it all I had,

And my parent’s insecurity became cured.

My friend kept her horses in my barn.

I helped feed and muck out stalls.

My responsibilities began to unravel like a ballof yarn.

And my parents began to make calls!

A month before my b-day,

I received an amazing quarter-horse.

It was my very own d-day.

Since then my life’s been an amazing course.

I improved my riding a bunch.

Now my own horse was in my pasture.

It was now that u had a hunch,

And was glad I made a gesture.

Horseback Safaris - Standardone-hour, two-hour, or three-hour horseback safaris areavailable daily. HorsebackSafaris can be arranged forriders with varying levels ofexperience. All guests should beat least 12 years of age; 10 years of age is an acceptable agewith proven riding experience. Guests weighing more than275 pounds will need to be assessed by our EquestrianDirector before they are allowed to take a Horseback Safari.Call-in reservations are recommended in order to assure thatwe and our horses are ready for you.

A favorite with visitors is our two-night “Crescent JCattle Drive Weekend Safari,” which includes some training inFlorida Cowhunter skills of ridin’, ropin’ and cow cuttin’.(Florida cattlemen weren’t “cowboys” because hunting thosewild Spanish-descent cattle in Florida’s woods and swampswas a man’s job, they said.) Choice of campground dependson weather, type of group and recommendation of the ridinginstructors.

Another favorite is similar, but shorter – anOvernight Trail Ride Safari combined with a next-day“Rawhide Roundup.” More time is spent riding the wilder-ness trails of Forever Florida and learning about nature, lesson cowpoke skills.

Corporate Co-workers, Schoolteachers, ProfessionalClub, Flying Clubs, School Groups, Church Groups, Families,Friends, Scout troops or multi-troop Camporees – there areactivities and a campground on Forever Florida or theCrescent J Ranch that are just right for a bonding experience.See the Facilities and Events page for more details.

From a small primitive one-troop Scout Camp onthe Crescent J that has been used by Girl and Boy Scouts formore than 30 years, we expanded to a remote but up-scalecampground ‘way back in the wilderness of Forever Florida, then added two campgrounds in between and most recently,a large area “up front” (near the highway) that comfortablyholds up to twenty Scout troops for a big Camporee.

Variations on these basic campouts and safaris canbe worked out with our staff.
