Letter from the Executive Director

I would like to sincerely thank you for being a valued GCOW Member!

I hope that you use this Business Directory as a reference guide to effectively and efficiently contact GCOW Associate Members and NGCOA Preferred Partners that may provide you with special member-only discounts, rebates and services.

As owners, I realize how busy you are during the season and how valuable your time is. You don’t always have the opportunity to look up contact information or know the various GCOW Associate Members or NGCOA Preferred Partners that can assist you in your business and save you money off of your bottom line.

Yet it IS important to utilize these vendors and partners since the cost-savings that can be realized can cover the cost of your membership dues in our association. Please use this business directory to keep apprised of some of the benefits that the GCOW/NGCOA can offer you!

The GCOW Board of Directors is always trying to come up with more ideas, events and provide better communication to offer you as a valued member. If there are other ideas or concerns you may have, please feel free to contact myself or any of the board members listed below. Thank you for being a valued member of the GCOW!

Mission and History

The mission of the Golf Course Owners of Wisconsin (GCOW) is to provide education and advocacy on behalf of its members and to promote golf throughout the state of Wisconsin. The GCOW, established as a non-profit association in 1984, is a member of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA). It is governed by an elected board of directors.

The GCOW is an association that supports the golf course owners and operators in the State of Wisconsin. By representing and working on behalf of Wisconsin’s courses, we serve to promote, protect and educate its members of all sizes.

The Northern Golf Alliance (NGA) is a partnership between the golf course owners associations in northern states or regions having similar customers and climates.

The primary purpose for the NGA of these golf course owners associations is to enhance the involvement of Corporate Partners which will result in benefits to our respective members and to our Associations.

By offering Corporate Partners the opportunity to join the NGA, the value to our golf courses and Associations’ businesses will be enhanced.

Corporate Partner Eligibility/BenefitsFor a company to be considered a Corporate Partner of the NGA, one NGA representative will suggest this company to the NGA members. If an NGA member Association objects to the development of this business relation, then each NGA member will solicit this company independently.

The NGA has the benefit of a broader marketing reach to multiple states/regions to offer to its Corporate Partners.

The NGA has the opportunity to be collaborative in marketing and sales to Corporate Partners Association members in the NGA reap the benefit of national companies offering broader discounts and programs exclusively

Alliance member associations have the opportunity for more sponsorship opportunities, advertising sales, and event involvement

NGA Corporate Partners should expect to receive greater membership discounts than individual corporate members in each Association.

What would you do if a golfer, co-worker or guest of your course collapsed in front of you? Would you know what to do?

Being prepared to save someone’s life by administering CPR and early defibrillation of the heart is something we should all aspire to. Using an emergency defibrillator (AED) to shock a person’s heart has proven to be successful in saving lives. It is also very easy and quick for a trained “ordinary” person to use an AED, if there’s one available. Dialing 911 and staying away from the victim will not save a life.

The American Heart Association regularly lists golf courses among the top five locations for an incident of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). SCA is the leading cause of death in the United States. Perhaps you know of someone who has experienced an episode. Even worse, perhaps you know of

someone who has lost their life. More than 450,000 adults and 7,000 children annually die of SCA.

Cardio-Start, a new member of GCOW and a sole source provider of emergency defibrillators, first aid supplies, and certified CPR instruction, offers the highest level of professional and responsive support to you, should you decide to implement a cardiac emergency plan on your course and within your facility. We will provide you with the peace of mind that your facility is prepared.

Owners and managers of golf course properties have many choices when choosing a firm to represent their interests managing and challenging property tax assessments. Due to the complexities of golf course operations, the tax representative must possess an understanding of the proper valuation methodologies that yields the lowest property tax liability for the client.Retaining a consultant that is not focused on your industry will lead to lost property tax savings. If your portfolio is being bundled into a property tax consultants pool of properties without specialized attention, you are missing opportunities.

Few tax authorities recognize the various components which make up the value of a golf course, some of which represent intangibles such as “good will” and end up over-valuing a golf course for tax purposes. It’s no wonder then that growing numbers of owners and operators are giving more serious thought to contesting or appealing their property tax assessments. Yet the prospect of mounting an effective tax appeal may appear daunting particularly to those without an in-house tax manager or who have little experience or familiarity with the appeal process.

How can a golf course owner cut expenses after years of cost consciousness have seemingly exhausted their options? Property taxes can represent a substantial portion of an expense statement and because property taxes are unrelated to the cost of sales, they’re not only troubling but can drag down the bottom line. Protesting an unfair tax valuation may be the answer.

Custom Manufacturing would like to offer a “Special 2014 Discount” of 5% off any Bridge or Boardwalk orders to GCOW members. Simply mention that you are a GCOW member and the discount is yours!

Custom Manufacturing, Inc. is a woman-owned small business with over 46 years of experience filling both commercial and government contracts with quality products.

Custom Manufacturing, Inc.’s bridge kits are a unique concept of dealing with off road bridge needs. These bridges are used on golf courses, snowmobile trails, walking and bike trails and ATV trails. The customer can construct the bridge right on site, many times with volunteer help, and it can be custom-designed to the site. A bridge kit consists of steel I-beams, which are predrilled and have a red oxide primer finish, cross members, MCA treated lumber and all necessary hardware. Bridges are either flat or arched design with horizontal railings, vertical railings or just a kick plate. They can be 4' to 20' wide and 20' to 80' long. In 2010, covered bridges were added to our product line.

An issue with many bridge sites is the limited use of any fill in wetland areas. This lead to our development and testing of a galvanized riser pan footing. This pan is a portable bridge footing and abutment that can be used in place of concrete footing and pilings. The patented concept was also used to develop a boardwalk footing system. The boardwalk pans come in two sizes and compact into the soil with no fill or foundation being used in the wetland area. The modular construction makes them easy to install with only hand tools required.

Golf Pipeline is the first national tee time search engine (third party) that provides golf courses with the ability to distribute their tee times in a non-barter, rack/retail rate, and commission-based model. Golf courses have asked for the Golf Pipeline model to replace much of the massive discounting and bartering that exists in the industry today.

Golf Pipeline is a Wisconsin company and serves golf courses in more than 15 states. Due to the unique Golf Pipeline social booking model, golf courses receive name, email, and home zip code data for each of the golfers in the foursome or group at no additional cost by being a customer. Just another tee time site? Think again. Golf Pipeline is the complete solution for the serious golfer OR beginner, and is becoming a great way for golf courses to reach the younger golfer due to the social network component of the solution. Golfers have the ability to organize tee times by inviting golf buddies to join the group through an electronic invitation. Golfers can invite their golf buddies by selecting Golf Pipeline friends, adding email addresses, selecting Facebook friends, or selecting LinkedIn connections. Golf Pipeline connects to golf course tee time inventory via a real-time interface to the course’s tee sheet software. If a golf course does not have software, tee times can still be added to the Golf Pipeline search engine. Any golf course wishing to distribute tee times - public, private, municipal, etc. can be listed on the website. Golf Pipeline complies with the full list of NGCOA Best Practices for Third Parties.

In 1997 Heartland Payment Systems opened its doors with a modest plan: to provide fair, honest and fully disclosed payments solutions to help businesses prosper. Never veering from our roots or our convictions, that plan has taken us and our clients to places most businesses could only dream of. Today, we process more than 11 million transactions a day and over $80 billion a year. Big or small, each of our clients enjoys the same benefits. A real person who will answer the phone anytime there’s an issue and not hang up until it’s resolved. Pricing and fees that are fair and upfront — so there are never any surprises. And solutions that go beyond card processing, allowing our clients to focus on running their business. We’ve come a long way since 1997, and we’re not done yet. While our size and offerings will continue to evolve, our core values remain steadfast.

GCOW Business Directory | Page 15www.gcow.org

Located in small town, Fennimore WI, this two year technical college has a lot more to offer. Southwest Tech’s Golf Management program, is one of the best choices for golf course management instruction in the Midwest.

Despite it’s small size, there are several reasons why Southwest Tech can make the argument, that their golf program is one of the best choices of education in the Midwest.

First, the golf program can make this claim, because of its incredible job placement. Interns and graduates of the program have been sent all over the country to work at some of the best courses in the world. Courses such as Whistling Straits, Pine Valley, Baltimore Country Club, Trump National, and PGA National are just a few of the courses Golf Management students have found work. In fact, their job placement percentage is perfect throughout the entire existence of the program.

Over the last 15 years, Southwest Tech’s Golf program, has placed 100% of its students at various jobs throughout the country. In addition, the instruction offered by the program at Southwest Tech is key to making the claim of ‘best in the Midwest’.

The class size of the Golf Course Management program averages no more than 24 students. Small classes give students the opportunity to not be just a number to their instructor. Each and every student gets one on one, hands on learning experience with their instructor. Moreover, Scott Kennedy, program instructor of Golf Course Management, uses his years of experience to help students build their careers even before leaving the college. Scott is a long time PGA member, who has worked at courses like, Eagle Ridge and Innisbrook Golf Club, site of the Valspar Championship on the PGA tour. With this experience in the business of golf, Scott Kennedy has taught Southwest Tech students to be some of the most educated graduates in their field. His contributions in education have even been recognized by the PGA. Scott is a two time winner of the Horton Smith award for education in golf.

Finally, Southwest Tech’s Golf program, is unique because it of the school’s educational philosophies. Southwest Tech programs all revolve around the Core Values. The Core Values are a set of skills that graduates will be able to display in their careers by the end of their program. These skills include, professionalism, integrity, honesty, teamwork, leadership, and many more. In effect, the Core Values are any attribute that will give students the edge in their job field.

With these values instilled in them, students are able to network more effectively, build professional relationships, and find careers, not just jobs.

Overall, Southwest Tech has a lot to offer. From giving students the opportunity to work all over the country to

helping graduates build careers with the attributes of success, Southwest Tech proves it’s worth over and over. Moreover, the Golf Management program, with its hands on learning, job placement, and incredible education, can rightfully make the argument, of “Best Golf program choice in the Midwest”.

An Honorary Member of the GCOW, we are thrilled to have the Wisconsin Golf Course Superintendents as an Allied Association partner!

The start of our association which is today called the Wisconsin Golf Course Superintendents Association was started after the conclusion the first University of Wisconsin’s Short Course for Greenkeepers in 1930. Thirty-nine charter members met in March of 1930 at Blue Mound CC, in Wauwatosa, WI to form the Wisconsin Greenkeepers Association. Host Paul Brockhausen was elected President. From these humble beginnings began a rich tradition of continuing education, professional camaraderie, and networking that continues to make the present WGCSA the premier association for Golf Course Managers in Wisconsin. The WGCSA has had a rich and vibrant history of volunteerism and service by the membership who have gave countless hours organizing and hosting meetings which are held at numerous golf courses throughout the state. The depression years of the 1930’s and the World War II years tested the association but steady growth through both lean and prosperous times has allowed the present membership to grow to over 450 members today.
