Sam Killebrew, representing Polk Citizens for Good Government, and Sherry McInvale, Public Affairs Director for the Polk Transit Authority, were the guest speakers at the Chamber’s August 19th luncheon. Sam emphasized importance of voting NO on Amendment 4, as the amendment’s passage would have devastating consequences for Florida’s economy.

Sheri urged the audience to vote YES, as she explained the significance of the ½ cent sales tax initiative to fund Polk County transit services. She described how enhanced transit services will complement high speed rail,

providing necessary transportation hook-ups for employees, students, retirees, and others; by adding a missing link to the transportation system in Polk County.

Attendees enjoyed a delicious meal catered by First United Methodist Church’s wonderful kitchen staff. Numerous door prizes were provided by our generous sponsor CEMEX, Lindvall Florists, Rays Baseball & the Chamber!

Do You Know The Secret? In this space we inform and educate the Chamber membership about current issues and

upcoming events. Now and then you will also find tips and strategies that can be used to

improve your business or personal life. I recently read a book and found its message very

fitting in today’s environment.

Not really a new book: The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne, is rather timeless. If you have read

it, use this as a reminder to practice the book’s premise that what you think – comes

true. That is basically “The Secret”. What you think about most or focus on most will

appear in your life. The author describes our thoughts as magnetic, attracting similar

thoughts to us. Positive thoughts result in positive outcomes. Similarly, negative thoughts

result in negative outcomes. The author calls it the Law of Attraction – you attract what

you dwell on.

Most people think about what they don’t want – and they get more of it. If you think, “I

don’t want to spill this coffee on my white shirt, or I don’t want to trip on the rug” –

Darn if it doesn’t happen – just like you predicted; because you were thinking about it.

So I challenge each of us to think about what we DO want, then believe we deserve it and will have it. You all

know people who believe they are going to win the prize – and they do. We marvel at the luck of Father Hugh

and Lois at every Business After Hours! We all wonder how they do it. They believe it will happen and it does.

Ever got up on the wrong side of the bed? Everything goes wrong – all day long. You expect it, you tell people

of your plight, they reinforce the negative thoughts. Your day gets worse, because you believe it will.

Next time you find yourself on the wrong side of the bed, sit back down. Take a few minutes to change your

attitude by closing your eyes, then smile and think about something that makes you happy. It’s impossible to

feel bad when you have good thoughts – try it. Write down things you are happy about, your favorite pet or

names of people you love. Read the list when you find yourself thinking negatively. To attract positive

outcomes, you have to think positive!

Think of something you want – a vacation in Jamaica, a new car, a loving spouse. Describe it verbally to

yourself, write down specifics – when is the trip, what color car, your perfect soul-mate, find a picture to look

at every day. Your mind focuses on the goal. You will find a way to make it happen.

So visualize what you want, believe you deserve it and will have it. Then laugh every day, love and respect

everyone, and be thankful for everything that comes into your life. You will be rewarded with love, happy

friends, a new car, and maybe even the trip to Jamaica!

The Chamber’s 28th Annual Pig Roast™ & Political Rally drew a large crowd to Haines City’s Lake Eva Banquet Hall on August 6. Mistress of Ceremonies Marty Bowen introduced the local, county, and state political office holders and candidates, who shared their platforms with the excited crowd. Sponsors enjoyed private time with candidates and incumbents at the exclusive VIP Reception held just prior to the main event.

Approximately 500 attendees enjoyed a fabulous barbecue dinner catered by John Michael Weddings & Special Events, asked questions and shook hands with well-known and aspiring politicians, and bid on the incredible

bargains at the famous Silent and Live Auctions. Businesses and individuals donated items ranging from football tickets to weekend getaways to help raise funds for the Chamber’s Annual Program of Work.

Thank you to Haines City High’s ROTC Color Guard and FFA students for their service during the event. Students presented the colors, helped with auction organization and dressed up as an elephant, donkey and Uncle Sam to entertain the crowd.
