HISTORYThe 3rd Earl of Mexborough owned Bushy Ruff and the Colonial style mansion, Bushy Ruff House, was built in 1824 by Mayor of Dover, William Knocker. It later became the home of the Earl of Mexborough and, in 1860, the home of John Banks who extended the house creating a walled kitchen garden and ancillary outbuildings . General Henry Derby-Griffiths bought it upon retirement and then in 1930 Captain Conrad Jorgensen and his wife, Constance, lived in Bushy Ruff House.

Bushy Ruff lake attracted artists, ornithologists and botanists due to its diverse flora and fauna and abundance of wildlife.

The house continued with military connections until 1950 when it became vacant upon the death of Constance Jorgensen and in 1973 the Local Authority purchased the small estate with 26 acres with the intention of developing it. This did not happen. They restored the grounds but the house remained empty for a number of years.

At last this elegant building has been brought to life once more by comprehensive restoration and conversion into 14 attractive homes.
