Oran – 11Ash This week's student of the week has been nominated by Mr Back. Oran has been nominated for diligently attending the school's Study Saturday sessions every weekend since they started. Oran often arrives early and works extremely hard. We wish Oran all the very best for his GCSE exams that have now started

Pariise-Jade - 12Oak Our KS5 student of the week is Pariise-Jade who is in year 12. Pariise-Jade has been given this award for her outstanding Attitude to Learning scores in her recent report. Pariise-Jade has worked incredibly hard throughout Year 12 and demonstrated a mature and resilient approach to her studies. She is currently studying English, mathematics, sociology, Spanish and the extended project qualification (EPQ).

Emily – 9Beech This week’s KS3 student of the weeks is Emily - 9 Beech for performing in the Sixth Form event last Friday. Emily stood up in front of a crowd and sang even though this is not one of her strengths. She showed determination and courage and received a huge round of applause for her performance. We are very proud of Emily! Well done!

At Bushey Meads this week we have been exploring the word ‘articulate’ which can be a verb and an adjective.

Key Stage Three Exams Mr Fisher – Assistant Headteacher

Year 9 students got their end of year exams off to a great start this week. Maths, English and science exams were held under formal conditions in the gym, emulating real GCSE exams. This prepares students for what they will meet in the not-too-distant future, helping ensure success. Students really took the exams seriously, arriving punctually, well prepared, and in a settled and scholarly frame of mind. This coming week is the turn of Years 7 and 8, who will get to experience the same conditions for their maths exams, with other exams taking place in classrooms. The formal gym exams

are as follows: Year 7 Maths Pathway 1, Wednesday 25th Periods 3 & 4 Year 7 Maths Pathway 2 & 3, Friday 27th Periods 3 & 4 Year 8 Maths Monday 23rd Periods 3 & 4

School Equipment – be prepared! Sara Ash – Assistant Headteacher KS5 In order to maximise the learning of all our students we expect all students to ensure they always have the correct equipment for every lesson. This consists of the following items:

Student planner Reading book 2 black or blue pens Coloured pencils 4 different coloured highlighter pens Purple biro style pen for correcting/improving work Pair of compasses Scientific calculator 2 pencils Eraser Pencil sharpener Ruler Protractor Set square ‘Pritt Stick’ type glue Round tipped safety scissors Pocket dictionary (For English lessons only) Pocket dictionary for MFL (For either Spanish or French lessons only) Personal computer earphones (for multimedia work)

The purple pen is a key item as evidence shows this is where the most progress can be made – through students responding to marking and feedback and correcting/improving their work.

Students can purchase a pencil case, currently costing £1, from the Pastoral Office which contains basic stationery items. Students can also purchase items from the Stationery Shop before school or at breaktime in the Learning Resources Centre.

COUNTY LEAGUE ATHLETICS The annual County League match hosted by Bushey Meads School took place on Wednesday 11th May at the Woodside Stadium. It was great to see nearly 25 staff helping out with a range of officiating responsibilities to enable the event to run so smoothly. Competing schools included St Michaels, Ashlyns, Highgate Boys and Girls, Abbots Hill Girls and Royal Masonic Girls. The Bushey Meads students again produced some excellent performances with the Senior Boys narrowly missing out on winning the match by 1 point . We had 4 individual event winners with Chris Osei (Senior Boys Long Jump) and Kaitlyn Williams both recording their third win in a row. Well done to all the students that took part and also the staff who made the event such a success.

The Poetry Trials Mr Fitzgerald – English teacher

Earlier this year, several of my English classes (Years 7, 8 and 9) entered into a poetry competition called The Poetry Trials open to students aged 11-18

across the country. The competition was fairly

open with the only rule being that poems could be no more than 30 lines. This allowed the students a free rein in which to demonstrate their creativity, and 47 students have been successful and had their work accepted for publication in a forthcoming anthology of successful entries. Tom is one such student in Year 8. Here he explains the inspiration behind his poem, ‘Do You Even Poem, ‘Bruh?’: “Poems. They can be difficult to make or it just sort of works. When I was writing this poem I had no idea what to do. I looked at what my friend was writing. He was doing a poem about poems and that was when the idea came to me. I was finding it difficult to write a poem, so that’s what my poem would be about. The hard part was trying to make it all rhyme (I wanted it to rhyme so I could do the joke in verse three). I found myself looking on rhyming websites to try and find words that rhymed. There were lots of times when I had to redo a whole verse just because it didn't sound right, but I think it turned out fine in the end.” Tom’s winning entry can be seen opposite. The fantastic success of these students follows on from that of the Year 9 English students, many of whom have now received copies of the anthology containing their winning Gothic short stories.

Do you even poem bruh? By Tom – 8Oak - Age: 13

Ok, let me get one thing straight I just don’t poem If you can poem, that’s great But I simply cannot poem I can’t get my head around rhyme patterns Like A,B,A,C I don’t get how it happens Trying to make things rhyme all the time And there are also these things called metaphors How on Earth do they work? I am 100 competitors In an endless race to poem I tried my hand at similies But they are not my friends They’re as evil as my enemies And my enemies aren’t very nice Nonsense poems are oh so hattaty They make no glorborb at all Words that make sense like hookacky should be getated in poems Hold on, I’ve just realised How are you guys reading this Well, I’m quite surprised I’ve been writing this down in my book I look back at my work Hang on one second I look up with a smirk I do poem! /(•o•)\

Theme of the Week

Ms Ash, Assistant Headteacher

House assemblies were held this week where the theme of the week “working together” was explored. A big focus on what it meant to be part of a team working towards the same goal. A link was made to the learning relationship between teachers and students where a student will respond to feedback given to improve their learning. It is important that all students play their part and take responsibility for developing their own learning through taking time to respond

to feedback given. Sometimes this time to respond to the comments and targets is given in lessons and we call it Dedicated, Improvement and Reflection Time or DIRT time; at other times it is expected that students complete this DIRT time at home. Students and teachers working together to improve learning will bring success.

BMS Building Project Update Mr Turner, Executive Principal

School debating society: May 18th 2016 E. Pinkus

This House would support non-uniform on a student’s birthday This week’s debate was organised by the Junior team who put forward the motion that on a student’s birthday, the school might allow the wearing of own choice clothing to school. Year 8 students Ayaan, Luke and Luka suggested that as a birthday is a special occasion, Bushey Meads could offer students the option to wear uniform or their own choice clothing. This would enable the celebratory day to be even more meaningful. On the other hand year 8 students Ryan, Matthew and Huda suggested that being a school student meant being proud of the identity and culture. At school students should be pleased to belong to the ‘student body’ and remember that they are there to study and not to fret about fashion or clothing as such. Is it not more meaningful to evaluate oneself on what is inside our mind and soul rather than what we are wearing! Today, only a small gathering was present as our year 12 and 13 students are currently sitting their A level examinations. Nevertheless, there were some excellent questions from the floor and these were managed by Chairperson George (year 8) who directed them to the relevant speakers and who managed the order of the debate. There was no winner (or should I say loser) at this fun debate, with both sides scoring equally. Perhaps this is a topic to revisit at a later stage. In the meantime, we wish all our seniors the very best of luck in their exams. Our next meeting will be after the half term break as lower school exams are next week.

Phase 1 of our exciting £5.5 million building project is now well underway and the latest work has started on what will provide a brand new smart car park for staff at the rear of the site near the astro turf. This

should ease parking congestion on Coldharbour Lane and significantly improve our busy drop off and pick

times at the start and end of our school days.
