The Barque of St. Peter Fr. Joe Kuharski

Greetings in Christ!

A couple of parishioners have asked me about accu-sations that have been hurled their way that as Cath-olics, they are not really Christian or that they are not going to be saved. There is much that could be said about this, and it hurts me to hear that. With the little space we have here, allow me to use an analogy we used in my series, borrowed from a priest named Fr. Mike Schmitz in Duluth. The analogy of the Church as a great ship is an ancient one (for instance, just look at the design around the walls of the Cathedral

and you will see waves), but this takes it a little further:

Imagine a shipbuilder who crafts a great massive " agship, and he sends a captain to guide the ship. The captain assembles a crew, and out of that crew, he appoints a # rst mate. The master shipbuilder and the captain in-vite in as many people as possible, and they out# t the ship with all of the best resources, including food, maps, compasses, and medicines. Now, right before the " agship is about to take o$ , the captain announces that he must stay behind, but that he is putting the # rst mate in charge. After many years, the # rst mate dies, and then another takes his place, and then the crew dies, and they are replaced, and then even many of the passen-gers, and more passengers are picked up. The crew uses all of the maps and compasses and medicines, and the ship stays on course. But then, over the years, there are certain # rst mates that are really not good leaders, and there are certain crew members that are corrupt as well – but the good news is that, even when there was a bad # rst mate or bad crew members, the " agship stays on course. Some passengers, however, since they are upset by the bad crew members and the bad # rst mate, they decide that they will craft their own ship. The problem is, when you’re in the middle of the ocean, where do you get materials to build a ship? – They have to take materials from the " agship, and they take some of the other resources, the maps, and so on. Some of the members of these other ships might even know the maps better than those on the " agship. Now, when you look at the " agship and all of the other ships next to it, some of those other ships are going to look fairly similar to the " agship. On the other hand, other ships would be so o$ course that they are not ultimately heading to the # nal destination.

What is my point with all of this? Jesus Christ came down to earth not to write a book, but to establish a Church. He built a great, amazing " agship, the Catholic Church, and assembled the crew for that ship, the Apostles, and the # rst mate, Peter. He out# tted the ship with the maps and the re-sources it needs, like the sacraments and the Scriptures (If you’re wonder-ing, yes, the only reason we know what books are actually the inspired Scriptures is because of the councils of the Catholic Church at the end of the fourth century). Despite having bad crew members or a bad # rst mate, that ship has always stayed on course. Now is this reason for us to boast as Catholics? No – we didn’t make the Church in the # rst place! But it should be a reminder of how grateful we should be for this Church, which keeps us on course for that # nal destination.

Trinity Central to Christian MassMaking the sign of the cross many times during Mass, even as the very ! rst

act of any Mass, is one way that the faithful ritually enact their belief in the

Trinity over and over again. “In the name of the Father, and of the Son and

of the Holy Spirit: Amen!” The Presider will sometimes invoke the Trinity in

a Greeting at the beginning of Mass that goes “The grace of the Lord Jesus

Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you

all.” This greeting is scripturally based on 2 Cor 13:13, 1 Cor12:4-6 and Eph

4:4-6. Reciting the Nicaean Creed at Sunday Mass all year, except for Easter

Sunday when Baptismal vows are renewed, invokes our belief in the Trinity

too. “I believe in one God, the Father almighty”, “I believe in one Lord Jesus

Christ” and “I believe in the Holy Spirit” are the three key phrases which be-

gin the three important sections of the Creed that invoke all three persons

of the Trinity. Faith in all three persons of the Trinity is part of the Baptismal

vows when each Christian is baptized “in the name of the Father, and of the

Son and of the Holy Spirit.“

The technical de! nition of the Trinity (three persons in one God) was given

to Christians at the council of Nicaea, called by Constantine in the year 325

C.E. This description eludes human understanding but provides a way for

those who believe to try to describe what is indescribable in human words.

As written in our Catechism: “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the

central mystery of Christian faith and life” (#234).

Bowing in Reverence as the Creed is RecitedThe General Instruction of the Roman Missal includes a solemn reverent

gesture for those who attend Mass. The instruction states “At the words

‘and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man’

all make a profound bow”. Bowing is an expression of reverence and honor.

The bow honors God for becoming human in Christ. Assembly members

are encouraged to follow the presider’s lead and bow at these words when-

ever the creed is recited.

Grades K-5 Arts Performance LunchStudents in grades K-5 recently had the opportunity to show their ! ne arts

talents during their Arts Performance Luncheon. Families were invited to

come to Mass with their children. After Mass, children performed the songs

they have been learning in music class. When the concert was over, stu-

dents brought their families over to the school to view their beautiful art

that they have made this year. This year’s art theme was food from “Le Art

Cafe”. Below are two examples of their work.

First Grade Learns about Butter! iesThe ! rst graders have been learning about life cycles and the changes in-

sects go through. We raised our very own butter" ies from the larva stage.

We watched the caterpillars grow into pupas, where they made their chry-

salides. Recently, they emerged and changed into butter" ies! While this was

happening, we made a booklet and wrote about the stages and changes

butter" ies go through in their life cycle. Ask a ! rst grader about a butter" y’s

life cycle!

St. Stephen’s Catholic School integrates faith with academics to prepare students to make solid Christian choices. It is an accredited, private school, comprised of pre-school, elementary, and middle school levels.

Faith: As a vital part of the parish community, we educate students in a Catholic atmosphere enriched by the Gospel messages of peace and justice. The spiritual development of students is the primary goal. The school recognizes that a person's faith is formed by living out that faith in community through prayer, worship, service and study; and grounded in our Catholic tradition.

Academics: In partnership with their family, each student is encouraged and directed to reach his or her potential. Our academic program emphasizes mas-tery of the basics, academic excellence, and a variety of extracurricular activities. The school prepares students to be fully equipped for their next level of academic achievement.

Community: The school seeks to provide a safe and trusting learning environment where each student is valued and chal-lenged to grow spiritually, academically, emotionally, socially, and physically.

Stewardship Re! ection“The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…” - ROMANS 8:16-17

If we are heirs to the kingdom of God, shouldn’t we work to build up His kingdom? Shouldn’t we be good stew-ards of our inheritance, using our time in prayer, our talent in charitable works and our treasure to care for the Church that God has left to us? Our Church is a treasured heirloom from God. Do we treat it that way?

Highway 10 Entrance to Calvary Cemetery Now Closed; Newly Beauti" ed Entrance Located on Gar" eld StreetSt. Stephen’s Calvary Cemetery has undergone a facelift that has beauti$ ed and enhanced the entrance and access. If you are visiting Calvary Cemetery for the Memorial Day Mass or to visit the graves of family and friends, you

will see these improvements.

As of Monday May 21, the entrance from Highway 10 closed for the remodeling of the Highway 10 Corridor. We suggest the following two routes to the new Gar$ eld Street entrance:

From Ferry Street and Pleas-ant Avenue in Anoka, go west on Pleasant to Wing$ eld Street (about three blocks). Turn right on Wing$ eld which will curve around and eventually become Gar$ eld Street. Follow Gar$ eld until you reach Calvary Cemetery on your left.

From Highway 10, go north on Thurston Avenue, and take the second turn on your right, which is the new Greenhaven Parkway. Follow Greenhaven Parkway and take a right on Gar$ eld. Follow Gar$ eld until you reach Cal-vary Cemetery on your left.

Pedimos a Dios buen

clima para este día.

La Procesión de Corpus Christi, el Próximo DomingoEl domingo, 3 de junio es La Fiesta del Cuerpo y La Sangre de Cristo,

Corpus Christi.
