    3. PopulationEconomyCurrencyAdministrative District

    1) PopulationA census, taken in 2010 by the National Sta-tistical Office (NSO), counted about 4.7 mil-lion people in Busan including 2.3 millionmales and 2.4million females. The genderratio was 98.7%. According to the recent re-port of NSO, the population surpassed 50million as of June 23th, 2012.

  • March-May. Spring is usually warm, but mornings andevenings can be quite chilly. Trees and flowers start tobloom. Winter clothes are still needed in March. Peopletend to dress lightly in April, and it sometimes gets veryhot in May.

    June- August. The weather is hot with temperaturesrangingfrom 25 to 35. Heavy rainfalls, called Jangma, fre-quently occur between late June and late July. A few ty-phoons with heavy rains and winds visit the countrybetween August and September.

    September- November. Temperatures get colderranging from 10 to 25. In November, it is as cold asit is in winter. People prepare winter clothes and heatersin advance. The autumn leaves are very beautiful.

    December- February. The weather stays very coldranging from -10 to 10. During this period, theweather seems to run in a cycle of three very cold days,followed by four less cold days. Snow and harsh windscan be expected. Warm clothes and heaters are neces-sary until it gets a little warmer in late February.

    1) Seasonal EventsThere are various seasonal customs in Korea. The Korean calendar usesboth the lunar and solar calendars. The seasonalevents usually follow the lunar calendar.

    1) Family Culture(1) Family Relations

    - A harmonious family is just as important as each member's happiness.- Hierarchy is important within the family.- Parent-child relationships are special. Korean parents place great empha-sis on providing love and care for their children.- Filial piety is greatly emphasized. This refers to the children's duty to takecare of their parents in their old age.

    (2) Husband and Wife Relations- Husband and Wife relations are important, but your role as a son ordaughter and a parent play a large part as well.- Housework and bringing up children have traditionally been consideredthe woman's job, but recently more men are starting to help out at home.- Korean men are not used to showing affections in public. Husbands prais-ing their wife in front of other family members are generally frownedupon. They take a prudent attitude about it.

    On this day in 1919, a nation-wide independence movement rose up againstJapanese colonialism.

    This is a day dedicated to Buddha's birthday.

    (3) Eorini-nal Children's Day, May 5

    This is a day dedicated to the happiness and welfare of all children.

    (4) Hyeonchung-il Memorial Day, June 6

    This is a day for honoring national heroes, including those who died duringthe Korean War.

    (5) Gwangbok-jeol Independence Day, August 15

    On this day in 1945, Korea was liberated from Japanese colonialism.

    (6) Gaecheon-jeol National Foundation Day, October 3

    This is the day on which the Korean nation was founded. The name Gacheon-jeol means "the day on which the sky opened". The legend says the son ofthe heaven-king, Dangun came down from the sky to build the nation.

    (7) Hangulal October 9th

    This day is a celebration of King Sejong, who is said to have devised the Ko-rean alphabet, Hangul, and promoted it study. Hangulal had not been ob-served as a public holiday since 1991, but was restored as a public holidayin 2013.

    (3) Adapting to Family Life- In order to have a happy marriage in Korea, it is important to overcomethe cultural differences. It can be difficult to adapt to family life and cul-ture in Korea. If you are experiencing problems, consider the followingrecommendations: Try to understand each other's family culture. Learn more about family tradition from your husband/wife and inlaws. Respect and follow the family culture. Solve problems through communication. Seek help from others.

    (4) Honorifics and Casual Expressions- In Korea, there are slight differences in language style depending on the dif-ferences in age, relation, and social status between speaker and listener.

    These differences can be broadly described as two speaking styles: hon-orific and casual. The honorifics are used with elders, and casual languageis used with younger people and friends.

    2) FoodKoreans enjoy sharing foodwith family and friends. Ingeneral, Korean food consistsof rice, soup, and side dishes.Various hot stews are alsopopular as well as side dishessuch as vegetables, steamedfoods, hardboiled foods,roasted meat, stir-fried foods,and pan-fried foods. One ofthe main side dishes is Kim-chi. As a substitute for rice,people will sometimes eat hotor cold noodles, wheat flakesoup, and rice cake.

    1. LocationBusan is located on the southeastern tip of the Korean peninsula. The city is ad-jacent to South Gyeongsang Province and faces the Korea Strait to the south.It borders Ulsan Metropolitan City and Yangsan City to the north, and GimhaeCity lies to the west. Cities located on a similar latitude to Busan are Tokyo inJapan, Zhongshan in China, Algiers in Algeria, and Oklahoma in the UnitedStates. Busan shares a similar longitude with Verkhoyansk in Siberia, Nagasakiin Japan, and Darwin in Australia.

    2) AreaBusan is a metropolitan city which has 15 districts and 1 county. It has an areaof 765.94 , representing 0.8% of the whole of the Korean Peninsula. Thelargest district is Gijang-gun, which occupies 28.47% of Busan, followed byGangseo-gu and Geumjeong-gu.

    3) ClimateBusan has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. It is rather cool in summerand warm in winter because it is located on the coast. The average temperature inwinter is about 3.8. Only 53 days of the year go reach temperatures below zero.

    Busan is usually called 'Marine City'. You can easily see the sea in 10 or 30 min-utes wherever you are. There are many famous beaches such as Haeundae,Gwangan-li, Song-jung, Song-do, and Dadaepo.

    1) Eligibility A foreigner who wants to stay in Korea more than 91 days fromthe date of entry.

    A foreigner who has lost their Korean nationality and so has gotforeign nationality or a foreigner who was born with Korean na-tionality and stayed in Korea more than 90 days with the permis-sion to stay in Korea.

    Exceptions in Alien Registration (a foreigner who applied to fol-lowing clause can be exempted)- A person or the family who works in diplomacy, official business and inter-national agreement (A-1, A-2, A-3)

    - All foreign workers/employees who work in diplomacy, all kinds of industry, thedefense industry with their family. All foreign workers/employees who have per-mission to exempt them from Alien registration by Minister of Justice.

    - Canadians who want to stay up to 6 months or correspond to following per-missible activities. Culture and Art Activities (D-1), Religion (D-6), Domes-tic Visit (F-1), Accompany (F-3), etc. (G-1)

    2) Registration Period If you want to stay in Korea more than 91 days from the date ofentry, you are required to register within the first 90 days of yourstay.

    You should register at the same time as when you ask permissionto stay in Korea or change your status.

    3) Registration Place The application can be processed at the immigration office (orbranch office) that has jurisdiction over your area of stay.

    NoticeIf a marriage immigrant has difficulties in maintaining marital relations due to unrea-sonable treatment by the Korean spouse and can prove that he or she is not respon-sible for the difficulties, the marriage immigrant may be naturalized in Korea evenbefore a divorce is finalized. It is recommended to consult with an expert on the de-tails of this procedure.

    Application Qualification Examination and Interview- When you apply for naturalization, the documents screening and site survey will com-mence.- As notification for your interview will arrive two to four weeks before the day of your inter-view, you must inform your local office of your new address if your address changes afteryour application for naturalization.- Foreign spouses are exempt from taking the written test, and only need to be inter-viewed. Interviews will be graded based on the applicant's Korean communication abilityand other basic qualifications as a Korean national.- If applicants fail the first interview, they will be given one more chance to pass the inter-view.     7. Inviting Parents and Relatives of Marriage ImmigrantsYour parents and relatives must apply at a Korean Embassy or Con-sulate abroad for you to invite them to Korea. Required documents andthe number of guests you may invite will differ based on the KoreanEmbassy or Consulate abroad. Please consult with an agent at a KoreanEmbassy or Consulate abroad.

    Numbers of Diplomatic Offices in the Foreign Countries

    Naturalization Permit Granted- The Permit is granted after the qualification examination, and the process is posted on thehomepage of the Immigration Bureau.- Once granted a naturalization permit from the Minister of Justice, you must register yourname in the family register, report renunciation of your foreign nationality, apply for is-suance of a resident registration card and return your certificate of alien registration.

    Renunciation of Foreign Nationality (ones embassy) or Written Confirmation of ForeignNationality Renunciation (Immigration Bureau)- Within 1 year of receiving notification of permission of naturalization, you have to write awritten pledge of foreign nationality renunciation to the Minister of Justice.- You will automatically lose your Korean nationality if you do not make the pledge thenyou have to go through the procedure for restoration of nationality.- If you renunciate your foreign nationality, submit the certificate you get from your em-bassy and to the Immigration Bureau and receive confirmation.- You should submit a copy of the relevant documents to your embassy (the original be-longs to you).- The pledge of foreign nationality renunciation can be made only during the maintenanceof marital relations. You can take the written pledge.- If you submit a "written pledge of foreign nationality renunciation", you can keep your for-eign nationality but will be treated as a Korean only. (You can use Korean passports only.)

    * Foreigners from countries which do not permit multiple nationalities (e.g.China), may their foreign nation-ality according to the law of their respective countries (You can get more information from your nativeembassy.)

    Renunciation of Foreign Nationality- Within six months of receiving notification of permission of naturalization, you must notifythe embassy of your native country or the consulate office of the renunciation of your orig-inal nationality and receive a written confirmation of foreign nationality renunciation. Youmust then submit this to the person in charge of nationality at your local office of theKorea Immigration Service to receive your foreign nationality renunciation confirmation.- You will automatically lose your Korean nationality if you do not receive a "written confir-mation of foreign nationality renunciation" from the embassy within six months.- If you cannot produce a "written confirmation of foreign nationality renunciation" in timedue to the immigration laws in your native country or because the embassy of your nativecountry does not exist in Korea, you may submit a "written pledge of foreign nationalityrenunciation" and receive a written confirmation of foreign nationality renunciation confir-mation at your local office of the Korea Immigration Service. You must submit this to applyfor issuance of a resident registration card.

    (2) International Drivers LicenseIf you have an International Drivers License, you can drive in Korea for 1 yearfrom the date on which it was issued). But it is not possible to drive a commercialcar, and you can only drive the cars mentioned on your international Drivers Li-cense. In the case that you did not take or failed the aptitude test, or in case thatyou caused a traffic accident, you will not be allowed to drive even though youhave an International Drivers License.     3) Transfer Discount System(1) Transportation card

    It is convenient for you to use a transportation card if you want to takepublic transportation in big cities in Korea. You can take a public bus, localshuttle bus, and subway with one transportation card. If you pay by trans-portation card, you can get a 10% discount than when you pay by cash.

    You can buy transportation cards at a subway station, Busan Bank, or trans-portation card shops near bus stops. The initial purchase cost of a trans-portation is between 2,000 and 6,000 won. You can continue to use thesame card by recharging with money and when required.

    When using public transportation like buses, local shuttle buses, and thesubway, you can get a discount when you transfer from one form of publictransportation to another.
